To think that the Girls Grammar school (Newstead Wood) is soley responsible for the all-round women that both Dina Asher Smith and Emma Raducanu have become.

I suggest that the sole reason, both Emma Raducanu and Dina Asher Smith are such well rounded individuals and of cause brilliant sportswomen, is down to their single sex grammar school educations.

I say this because I notice a number of posters suggestive that single sex grammar schools are highly toxic, thus destroying many girls.
I have noted how over the years that Newstead Wood has been referenced regularly, for being a toxic environment, like Emma and Dina this is my old school. Finally, perhaps controversially I believe that if Emma or Dina had been educated in a mixed Comprehensive school, neither would have ever reached the heights both have or will.

What an odd post! Did their own talents, drive, efforts and support of friends and family have nothing to do with it?

I went to a single sex grammar in Kent but am far less invested in it than you seem to be OPConfused.

What?

x2boys · 07/09/2021 20:09

Nothing to do with talent then?
My son goes to the same bog standard comprehensive as the seven times olympic medallist Jason kenny attended what does that say?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 07/09/2021 20:09

Given the errors, your post possibly isn't the best advertisement the school could have hoped for.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 07/09/2021 20:09

Huh? Solely responsible. Absolute nonsense. Nothing to do with supportive families, genes, friends or anything else?

Fairlyurgentdecision · 07/09/2021 20:11

Well I went to a single sex school and bloody loathed it. Came out with 2 O-levels.

You're talking utter drivel woman!

Fairlyurgentdecision · 07/09/2021 20:11

Oh and mine was a grammar too

😂 it’s like you read my mind

This ^^

How hurtful for a parent if everyone felt the child's success was SOLEY down to the school!

Mummyoflittledragon · 07/09/2021 20:24

People always need drive and determination plus opportunity. When I was at school, we didn’t learn tennis for example. Children, who are encouraged to excel in sport will but may also reach a point, where they stop wanting to participate and / or train. My dd is very sporty, an al rounder, but won’t show an ounce of it at school. I do get what you’re saying but am not 100% with your view.

peewitsandy · 07/09/2021 20:28

Ok you don't like what I have posted but why be rude and discriminatory against me ?

However, If I had phrased the question to suggest that mixed comprehensive schools create more rounded individuals , no doubt i would have been swamped with approvals .

To ridicule somebody's opinion because you believe it to be inferior, based on their poor English Grammar skills is exceptionally low.
I am entitled to ask for a little recognition for a school which has constantly been slammed on here when it has educated two of the best young British female sporting people.

Clearly, the school doesn’t teach grammar particularly well, but at least they seem to have decent PE teachers. So that’s something, I suppose.

CatJumperTwat · 07/09/2021 20:30

What? I went to Newstead and this thread is ridiculous.

TheRebelle · 07/09/2021 20:31

Well I think the school I went to was excellent, does everyone agree?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 07/09/2021 20:33

I have a friend whose DC has won multiple medals at the paralympics. I know how much support they have given their DC both in terms of time and money. They have driven them from one end of the country to the other for training camps, paid vast amounts for competitions abroad etc. etc. Are you really trying to suggest that successful athletes have no back up but their school?

Mayorquimby2 · 07/09/2021 20:34

If it was solely responsible they'd be churning them out year on year

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 07/09/2021 20:35

I could claim this is outing... but since 150ish girls go there each year...

I went to Newstead Wood. Loved my time there. It wasn't perfect, no school is. The girls and teachers worked hard. Many had parents that expected a lot of their daughters. The whole belief system of the school was we were capable of achieving anything we put our minds too- but we had to work for it.

SecretKeeper1 · 07/09/2021 20:35

Yes. You do indeed come across as a very well rounded individual.
NeverTalkToStrangers · 07/09/2021 20:36

Obviously mixed sex comps are brilliant because King Ecgbert Sheffield produced Jess Ennis and Joe Root. Hence they can produce both individual excellence and team players. Your move OP.

I didn't realise until now that every single top sport person had been to a grammar school - you learn something new every day
itsgettingwierd · 07/09/2021 20:38

And how many equally well rounded and gifted athletes went to mixed grammars, single sex comps or mixed comps? Also indo single sex or mixed?

There's far more to being a top athlete than where you attended to receive your education.

That isn't to say the school wasn't supportive of them and this helped. I just would put have said there's enough evidence to prove they are the drivers of that success.

dworky · 07/09/2021 20:39

The majority of successful women athletes attended Comps, actually.

NiceGerbil · 07/09/2021 20:39

Huh?

I thought that the willingness of the parents to spend loads of weekends etc driving to competitions etc was a massive part of it.

And a massive amount of drive and determination on the part of the athlete.

What a strange post!
