Walked between caravans

Hi currently staying on in my friends holiday home and me and dp wanted to walk down to the river and took a quick route between 2 caravans and a lady came out and shouted very aggressivly do not walk between the caravans and slammed her door shut so was we in the wrong.

On our caravan site, you do own the plot your caravan sits on and the grassland outside your door upto the grass of the next caravan pitch. We also own a portion of the land behind the caravan.

There is a path that goes all way round the site and it is expected if you have a car to drive up and park behind the caravan, so you are not ruining in effect someone's main grass area. Same etiquette applies for walking around the campsite, to stick to the paths.

There has been some people who haven't followed the campsite etiquette, it doesn't personally bother me if anyone walks past when it's not in use. For me it would only annoy me, if we were sat out eating, I would find that rude if someone walked past our garden table while we were all sat around it.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 05/09/2021 07:28

You could do the same walk every day and when she says something you can say,
"Did you not know, it's an unwritten rule that when it's been done once it sets a precedence forever. I thought everyone knew that."

Rubyupbeat · 05/09/2021 07:29

She was very rude. But as a motorhome owner you learn 'rules' as you go along.
The cutting through as such wouldn't bother me, but it does my dogs and they will bark, which will then set others off. Not a good thing any time of day or night.

NoWordForFluffy · 05/09/2021 07:30

Well, if it's not a written rule, then it simply isn't a rule that exists / needs to be followed, IMO.

Plus we have experienced owners of statics saying there is no right to the land around the van, so claiming ownership and rights makes the owner either mistaken or lying.

Having said that, I wouldn't walk past the same caravan again if it were me, as I don't think poking the bees nest is the best plan!

armanted · 05/09/2021 07:32

Surely it depends on the site, every time I've stayed in a caravan there's been a space beside it for your car, no gardeny looking area at all. People usually stick to the paths, but occasionally cut across, no one seems to mind.

Privately owned ones are easy to spot, strategically placed plant pots etc., best avoided.

NoWordForFluffy · 05/09/2021 07:35

As other owners come on as I'm typing!

It would make sense to change this from etiquette to an actual written rule, if the land is owned, so holiday makers know. Nobody is psychic and she was rude.

Clearly this is a risk when you live in a static caravan. 🤷‍♀️

RoxytheRexy · 05/09/2021 07:38

This is all news to me. I’ve had many caravan holidays. I also worked for 2 years in a caravan park and stayed on site in a caravan. Maybe it depends on the area?

Miniroofbox · 05/09/2021 07:40

I agree @NoWordForFluffy. The one my family had a static on, it was an actual rule though and there we’re signs up. One as you came in through the gate and others dotted Around.

CovidCorvid · 05/09/2021 07:43

It will be her pitch…..which she owns/rents. She likely hasn’t got a fence round it as there are rules on static sites about no fences. Unless it’s a designated path you can’t walk there. Imagine if everyone cut through what is effectively her garden.

FreeBritnee · 05/09/2021 07:43

I equally got screamed at at a car boot sale once for walking between stalls 😬. It was bloody frightening.

HelloDulling · 05/09/2021 07:45

Unwritten and unspoken rules need writing down, pinning up and talking about, clearly.

NoWordForFluffy · 05/09/2021 07:45

@Miniroofbox

I agree *@NoWordForFluffy*. The one my family had a static on, it was an actual rule though and there we’re signs up. One as you came in through the gate and others dotted Around.
Which makes sense.

If I was there and there wasn't an obvious written rule, it would actually depend on what it looked like as to whether I'd have walked through.

I do think it's daft expecting visitors to know etiquette without being told though!

CovidCorvid · 05/09/2021 07:46

Believe me they do mind, you just haven’t been shouted at. Grin. I’m on various fb touring caravan groups and every week someone posts seething about people cutting across their pitch. The issue is that if the weather is nice that part of their pitch (which they are paying for) can be used for sunbathing, bbq, etc so there is an expectation of some privacy. Even if they’re not sat outside it starts dogs off barking if someone comes to close to the caravan.

Miniroofbox · 05/09/2021 07:46

I agree @NoWordForFluffy

Pottedpalm · 05/09/2021 07:47

If it was a convenient short cut to the river then maybe many people were cutting through, which would be very annoying. Just use the path; you wouldn’t stroll through neighbours’ gardens just because there were no fences !

StarshipsAreMeantToFly · 05/09/2021 07:49

Try not to take it to heart. Maybe she gets it all the time due to the position it's in. She shouldn't have yelled but I can see she might get frustrated if it happens all the time.

MediumOven · 05/09/2021 07:50

The one we used to go to it was in the rules and also up on signs. Keep to the paths

Yes this is common. Most people don't need telling but obviously there are some that do.

MiloAndEddie · 05/09/2021 07:51

I actually own a static caravan and had no idea this was a thing!

I tend to try to avoid doing it but sometimes you need to cut through. Never been screamed at.

I wouldn’t do it on the touring pitches though because of cables etc and the pitches are smaller.

Dumpedwife · 05/09/2021 07:51

It's an unwritten rule on your and static sites.
She was rude and over reacted to you so understand your annoyance but accept the fact its part of caravan site culture and don't do it again.

It's just about respecting peoples privacy and space I guess. You simply didn't realise or know and she was excessively rude and over reacted.

That's it in a nutshell.

Dumpedwife · 05/09/2021 07:52

*tourer and static

Billben · 05/09/2021 07:57

@PyongyangKipperbang

But it isnt their garden!!

If it was then it would be fenced off and private. Its a field with no designated "your bit, my bit" going on, so why on earth would the OP think for one second that a bit of grass that looks like all the other bits of grass, is off limits?

Choosing to spend stupid amounts of money on a temporary dwelling with service charges on top is your choice, it doesnt actually buy you rights to any land! Its said often on here "You dont own the road...." well there you are!

Exactly this.

It just reminds me of people who buy a house without a drive and then claim the space on the road in front of it as their parking space.
You want a garden? Buy a place with one 🙄

KaycePollard · 05/09/2021 07:57

You were rude. You intruded on her space as if she weren’t there and her privacy didn’t matter.

YABU

Smileyaxolotl1 · 05/09/2021 07:58

I worked on caravan parks for 4 years - it’s really not a thing unless you were actually walking through a fenced and demarcated garden area which I’m sure you weren’t.
Unfortunately some owners think they own the whole park.

SueSaid · 05/09/2021 07:58

'Take the innocent mistake on the chin and stop acting so entitled?'

Such utter overreactions on this thread.

Campsites and caravan sites are not like houses with gardens so even if we don't walk in neighbours front gardens that doesn't mean we can't walk around camp sites, even 'off path'.

Caravanners if you're really this previous maybe caravanning isn't for you.

ExceptionalAssurance · 05/09/2021 08:01

@Globaluser

I would never ever have thought the area AROUND the caravan is owned by the caravan owner. And that it’s someone’s “garden” unless it clearly looked like a garden e.g garden furniture, plant pots, etc.
Same, and I've done loads of caravan site holidays. Though I do tend to stick to paths as so easy to get lost.

Personally I like to reward that kind of obnoxious behaviour, so I'd be doing it again.
