So, I've done it for a few years... make and freeze the yorkshires, roast tats, roast parsnips, carrot and swede mash, braised red cabbage etc. a few weeks before xmas.

Today I got a lidl waste not box and it had carrots, swede and red cabbage in... I've made my first bit of xmas dinner on THE FOURTH OF SEPTEMBER!!! (carrot and swede mash btw... braised red cabbage'll be tomorrow 🤷🏻‍♀️).

I'm feeling a tad unreasonable!

I love a Lidl veg box but if I had bought that today the last thing on my mind would be Christmas. I use all of those items week to week anyway............

MasterBeth · 06/09/2021 12:08

Do what you want. It seems ridiculous to me.

sunflowerdaisies · 06/09/2021 12:49

I cooked/prepared some veg and froze it the other day - we grew it in the garden and want some of it for Christmas Day! I also do potatoes like you do nearer the time and cook from frozen, they come out great.

I also don't get the freeze everything ahead of time malarkey, when we have a 'special meal' at MIL's DH and I bet on how long it's been in the freezer. If I'd made food for last Christmas and frozen it (which I wouldn't as we don't do batch cooking etc) then I would have eaten it in January or February, not saved it for a year.

How do you know what you want to eat at Christmas??? But other than that amazing, well done OP!!!!

Isn't it all pretty standard?! I'll just make some of all of it and then live off bubble and sqeak for a while!

And thank you 😊

Well done you!! I'm very impressed by people who are this organised, I normally have an 'oh shit' moment when I realise I've missed the deadline for ordering food at every single supermarket and have to book annual leave to do a food shop at a quiet time of the day.

On the plus side, we didn't eat my (home made ) Christmas cake last year so it's in the freezer - I'm hoping the amount of alcohol that's in it will see it through safely. I also found a sloe berry bush out on a walk which was very exciting, so I have my first ever batch of sloe gin doing its thing in the cupboard and I will crack it open at Christmas.

Whatabloodycircus · 10/09/2021 17:39

Ah see, I haven't made a Christmas cake in years... you're extra super prepared with yours! I do still have something in my cupboard which I'm wondering if it'll be ok, hang on a mo...

I mean, it was 12 months matured when bought so what's an extra few?! 😆

SirChenjins · 10/09/2021 17:49

Go for it - I bet it’ll be very tasty and nicely matured! Smile

ManifestDestinee · 10/09/2021 18:20

@SpiderinaWingMirror

Yabu. It's a feckin roast dinner with a few extra bits. Why would you need to think about it in Sept?
I never understand people who say this. First of all, if its just your average roast dinner you're really not doing it properly. Secondly, many of us are cooking for many more people than we might normally do a Sunday dinner for. For example 3 years ago my Christmas dinner was for 26 people. That needs rather a lot of vegetable prepping.
BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 10/09/2021 18:22

Yeah but no vegetable prep takes almost four months 😂

ManifestDestinee · 10/09/2021 18:23

I doubt OP is prepping continously from this point on! She has the veg and the time and the freezer space, it's just a matter of doing it whenever it suits.

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 10/09/2021 18:24

I know, I'm just messing around Grin

I'm still not convinced that I'd be tempted to eat four months old food, but clearly lots of people do it and think it's fine.

Problem is either people in my house either aren't really bothered for xmas pudding or are just too full... That's why 5 years on it's still in my cupboard, ah well, I'll hang on to it jic 🤷🏻‍♀️😆

Everyone knows that sprouts have to be cooked on a rolling boil for four months or they’re too crunchy. Literally everyone.

SirChenjins · 10/09/2021 18:34

We’re the same here @Whatabloodycircus. I’m the only one who likes Christmas pudding so buy a little individual one and force it down and then undo my top button Grin
