So, I've done it for a few years... make and freeze the yorkshires, roast tats, roast parsnips, carrot and swede mash, braised red cabbage etc. a few weeks before xmas.

Today I got a lidl waste not box and it had carrots, swede and red cabbage in... I've made my first bit of xmas dinner on THE FOURTH OF SEPTEMBER!!! (carrot and swede mash btw... braised red cabbage'll be tomorrow 🤷🏻‍♀️).

I'm feeling a tad unreasonable!

@Pucarbuile

How many will you be feeding that it requires this level of preparation?
Just the four of us and at a push eight! 😬

I've been reading the Christmas board for a week now and Home Bargains Christmas stock goes out today, so it certainly isn't too early. I'm enjoying the Christmas tips. My autistic adult DD has only been eating roast dinners for two years. We are busy right up till Christmas and fit visiting in on Christmas day, so time saving tips are very helpful.

AmelieLovesAutumn · 05/09/2021 01:49

thank goodness it's not just me! What've you got? Am I behind?!

Are you aware there's a Christmas Topic?

Posting there you will find other crazy people freezing vegetable in sept for Dec!

AmelieLovesAutumn · 05/09/2021 01:50

Oh & YAB VVVU to use that horrid word!!!

Millicentsparty · 05/09/2021 01:53

Did you mean unreasonable or unseasonable?

I cater for 4. I just buy ready made veg (Actually ready made everything if I can) two days before Christmas and stick them in the oven and microwave during the hour before eating. I buy Christmas. So much less stress for me. I envy you chefs.

Whatabloodycircus · 05/09/2021 02:05

I hope you find something helpful here 🤞😊. Pre preparing isn't a bad thing, my op was a bit tongue in cheek because I wanted to know what other people thought of my seriously early prep! BUT there is nothing wrong with early prep and even better if you can buy produce that would otherwise end up in land fill (even though it's still fine!). X

Oh no! All you have to do is boil a few things and roast a few things... it tastes a lot nicer than shop bought and is sooo much cheaper! X

Won't they get freezer burn from being in the freezer for so long?

Susannahmoody · 05/09/2021 02:22

Well it'll be cake making time soon too

Whatabloodycircus · 05/09/2021 02:24

I don't think so... we have stuff stored in the freezer for 9 or 12 months and its still all ok 🤔. We're talking 3 months here and it'll all be ok if it's contained properly 👍

Whatabloodycircus · 05/09/2021 02:26

Wasn't that about two months ago😆🤣

Please tell me this was tongue in cheek and you weren't really cooking sprouts at 1am
Mrbob · 05/09/2021 03:29

Making dinner for 4 people really isn’t so hard you need to do it 3 months in advance. And food sitting in the freezer for that long really isn’t going to taste that great. Can you not find a 15 minute window in your schedule any time between now and Christmas to boil some potatoes Confused

AppleJane · 05/09/2021 03:40

I do this every year (although I usually start in November) as a 'back up' plan in case of any last minute problems. We then eat the freezer Christmas dinner on New Year's Day.

There has already been talk on the news of possible food shortages at Christmas so it helps me not to feel stressed by the news to plan ahead. I didn't have to panic buy during lockdown because I was already a mini prepper. Check out the prepping threads OP!

SpiderinaWingMirror · 05/09/2021 07:17

Yabu.
It's a feckin roast dinner with a few extra bits. Why would you need to think about it in Sept?

RockallMalinHebrides · 05/09/2021 07:46

Nice to see a few others have the spouts on - we like to get started around Easter.

skodadoda · 05/09/2021 08:04

@DappledThings

You freeze roast potatoes? They can't come out well.
Yes they do!
Howareyouflower · 05/09/2021 08:07

I also like to spend Christmas day out of the kitchen as much as possible, but I couldn't bring myself to have frozen stuff on the day. I prepare the veg in the living room on Christmas Eve whilst watching TV, then parboil the potatoes on Christmas morning whilst pottering about making breakfast. Take the turkey out an hour before serving, cover it with foil, towels and the oven glove, turn up the oven and put the potatoes in. After half an hour put the parsnips in, steam the veg for 10-15 minutes and make the gravy. I'm sure I don't spend much more time in the kitchen than you do, @Whatabloodycircus !

Oblomov21 · 05/09/2021 08:07

I find that frozen food doesn't last that well, so surprised you are doing it 16 weeks, that's like 4 months ahead.

Howareyouflower · 05/09/2021 08:09

Also if you like a traditional Christmas pudding, you can cook it and then reheat it in a slow cooker. No steam, and comes out perfect!

KateTheEighth · 05/09/2021 08:11

YABU
