to hate deciding what's for dinner

A slightly lighthearted one but AIBU to hate being the one to decide what's for dinner?

It gets to 4 and I start feeling super pissed off because it's time to think about it again. And it's made worse because the kids only seem to eat a handful of things. I get irritated then if it's something I can't be faffed with or I'm bored of eating.

I realise probably IABU because I'm lucky to have food, I could meal plan or try and get my kids to eat a bigger variety of food but right now I'm so meh!

Does anyone else feel like this????

Very tedious. This week's: salmon, steak either spuds or chips. Wed I got a chinese! Last night fish again. Tonight a pizza. They dont like pasta or stew. Got tired spag bol so dont really eat it. Hate cooking to be honest!!! Teens hate most this list lol

WhitePhantom · 03/09/2021 21:01

Oh God yes!

I've told the kids many times "The worst part of being an adult is having to decide what to make for dinner EVERY FUCKING DAY FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!" Grin

Paddingtonsmarmlade · 03/09/2021 21:04

I'm so fed up of it, dh and ds will only come up with fish and chips if you ask them.

anewchapterishere · 03/09/2021 21:06

It's absolutely atrocious and I am so glad to see so many other people hate it too.

If it was just me and DH it would be fine but the kids are fussy despite my best efforts to "expose them to new foods" and it always seems to be either pasta or chicken nuggets. Who are these people cooking healthy, organic, food from scratch for their kids - and their kids then eat it? 😩 just getting something down their throats is my main goal.

Hate meal planning even more than not meal planning though, makes life incredibly boring and I am not very good at getting to the supermarket on the right days. God it's awful. The worst.

I do like cooking, but am so sick of it now. I would happily live off cheese, bread and olives with the odd cooked dinner here and there.

Agree with you all ... I enjoy cooking for myself, I have been on my own the last two nights and it's just been so easy ... cook exactly what I enjoy to eat.

And I don't agree that meal planning is the answer ... all too often I plan a casserole and it's a hot day ... or a BBQ & it pours with rain. And too often there are individual portions of the meal left over, Not enough for a proper meal but too good to throw out.

My DM has recently been widowed, and although sad, she says a huge bonus is only having to please herself for sorting the meals.

Janaih · 03/09/2021 21:10

Hello Fresh changed my life for this reason. Or Gousto they are much the same. They will even choose the meals for you if you can't be bothered.
People will offer you discount links but its usually better value to Google it yourself and sign up via their paid ad.

YADNBU! I always found it quite stressful and very very dull. I have two picky eaters including DP and I've cooked three different bloody meals on occasion when no one can agree.

I would definitely also recommend Gousto though. I've only recently started getting them and it does take the stress out of it. I still pick the meals but it's much more enjoyable. So far they've mostly been eaten without any grumbles which is an utter miracle too.

Yep, bane of my life as well. I am sick to death of trying to work out meals for family who all have different tastes.
I plan ahead as it makes me anxious trying to work it out on the day.
I have a set plan in mind for 7 meals - 1 pasta meal, 1 curry meal, 1 vegetarian meal, 2 grilled meals, 1 fish and chip meal, 1 pie meal. To try and give some variety.
I then plan for a rolling 2 days ahead which meal we will have. Everyone knows the plan and any changes needed to be requested with 2 days notice.
It works for me and makes life a little easier and I am not constantly wondering what I am going to cook!

NoSquirrels · 03/09/2021 21:29

The worst is when everyone comes in from work/school and asks"what's for tea?". I feel like screaming "HOW THE FUCK SHOULD I KNOW??"

I actually refused to answer this to DC1 the other day. They were perplexed at my absolute refusal and rather insistent I just told them. And I ended up explaining VERY TESTILY that no, ‘Whatever I Cook’ is what’s for dinner and there’s no benefit in me telling you because you’ll probably be unimpressed and as it won’t change the outcome or the meal I’d rather save that annoyance until after I’d bloody cooked.

Also blessed with a DH with odd requirements a d a family who can in general never think of any meals they like at a helpful time (meal planning, supermarket shopping) but are full of ideas at inconvenient moments when there’s already food in the fridge. Gah.

Maskless · 03/09/2021 22:05

"Does anyone else feel like this????"

Yes, me.

I cook only for myself, and nowadays I cook only twice a week and make enough for the days in between.

One time I'll make enough chicken curry for 2 meals a day, for 3 days. Then maybe lamb casserole. Then a big saucepan of bolognese. Then a pile of home made hamburgers. Then a roast leg of lamb and baked spuds.

Sometimes I bake a bagful of spuds and eat them over the next 3 or 4 days. Once with just butter; once with grated cheese; once with tuna, etc etc.

So for 2 or 3 days all I have to do is reheat a portion in the microwave.

CrossUniStudent · 03/09/2021 22:15

Yanbu. I meal plan, it still horrendous. I get blank looks when I ask for ideas and I'm so bored of the same foods. One week I told dh and the kids to meal, plan, shop and cook. It took them alllll day to plan and shop. I did the cooking as actually just taking the planning and shopping out made a huge difference to how I felt about the cooking.

JustLookingThanks · 03/09/2021 22:43

We have days for different types of meal too. Monday is vegetarian, Tuesday something out the freezer, Wednesday is fish normally salmon with pasta or new potatoes, Thursday is something from a previous Gousto box or a Simply Cook recipe (spice kit and recipe card enough for up to 4), Friday a ready meal or frozen fish and chips, Saturday we try out something new or have veggie burgers/Mexican/Stirfry and Sunday is normally a proper dinner like chicken or a lentil cottage pie ( Mary Berry's recipe thehappyfoodie.co.uk/recipes/vegetable-and-lentil-cottage-pie/)
If you'd like to try Simply Cook here's my free box referral code simplycook.com/invite/JS8088?via=app

I love cooking and eating but I feel your pain, I just can't be bothered to make family meals every single day and come up with something to cook, that suits a fussy family.

Belledan1 · 04/09/2021 08:59

I am the same. I asked DH what wanted tonight for tea as normally make bit more effort the weekend and he said "something nice" !! Back at work this week 2 days a week as being wfh full time but doing a mixture. I don't get in until late so they are going to have to fend for themselves. So use to me having meals ready. I can see myself doing shepherds pie etc for them to reheat on them days.
