Aibu - internal interview cancelled a few days before

Kitchendrama1 · 02/09/2021 20:27

As above, I had an internal interview scheduled for next week. It’s now cancelled. HR did say the job was still going ahead but due to a business need (or something) it’s now not going to happen and a new date isn’t set.

Should I take it at face value?

Whole company has had a major restructure (no jobs lost and a few created) and the job is currently filled by someone as a seconded. She’s stated she doesn’t want the job on a permanent basis.

I think they want to create another job for a person who is currently on another team as a senior position but they perhaps want to make a job for her?

I don’t know.

Voting - yes you are being unreasonable. No, it’s bad news.

Can anyone see this?

Yes

Lol it’s so funny no one replied :(

Is the job still going ahead or not?. If recruitment has been paused just say you can interview when it’s unpaused. If they are redesigning the job just make sure you make it clear either way you wish to apply.

Probably because no one here can tell you what is going on!!
BigPyjamas · 03/09/2021 14:41

This isn't uncommon, plans change, roles change, client needs alter unexpectedly.

Better to know now than have wasted your time at interview.

I think the lady from HR said it’s still going ahead…. But she said she they couldn’t provide a date. I think they would also say that if it wasn’t going ahead.

I think it’s something to do with a person being on long term sick and also another person who’s supposed to be on the team but she’s working at a senior level on another team (filling in but they should be fully recruited by now).

No @starfishmummy and that’s the annoying part

I'd assume the position has been filled by another internal candidate.

Wouldn’t they go through the interview process anyway? HR said the position is still available…. I’ll find out Monday anyway.

@Kitchendrama1 what would be the point?

MrsBumm · 03/09/2021 16:26

Is it a) the interview was cancelled "due to a business need", but the role is still available- in which case don't worry, they will reschedule it next week or b) the whole new post is being reevaluated "due to a business need" in which case they are restructuring/changing it for someone else /can't afford it etc etc

MatildaOfFlanders · 03/09/2021 16:34

I’d just take it at face value. Not everything has a Machiavellian ulterior motive.

Yes I do think it’s the latter due to the team member coming over

We are living in turbulent times. They need someone to fill the roll but I suspect they've decided that covering it with overtime or getting someone to do two jobs is cheaper than hiring someone full time.

Just a guess but likely the reason. Getting 2 people to cover 3 rolls requires less cost than 3 full times.... in short.

Position already exists and we’ve expanded over recent times.

I think they will make a job for this other person.

But I don’t have a crystal ball and why am I asking to only shoot down anything you/others say….

i meant, what did they actually TELL you. The job is "still a live vacancy which people can apply for", or "the job is no longer going to happen and not being recruited for"? I can't tell from the wording of your post whether they said your INTERVIEW at 3.25pm on Friday etc was cancelled or the whole recruitment process was cancelled.

They said the job is still available…. I’m 99% sure.

I’m not at work at the moment (annual leave) so I’m thinking that they want to tel me when I’m back?

In your position I'd probably assume they had someone else in mind tbh, but you never know

Flowers500 · 04/09/2021 13:55

I wouldn't go assuming all this about giving it to other people, etc. it sounds like there is just a delay--e.g. a project is 6 months behind so they won't need someone until early next year, or there was slower growth in an area than expected so they won't need more account managers for a bit. That kind of thing.

The position is already filled by someone…. And has been for about 3 years. She’s stepping down.

What exactly were you planning to do even if they cancelled interview and said job was still available?
The only thing you can do is talk to the hiring manager but if they didn’t want you they could still go ahead with the interview and reject you, to ‘follow due process’.
Find another job …

TractorAndHeadphones · 04/09/2021 14:19

Also sometimes it’s easier to create a new role and hire a person into it as a promotion.
I’ve seen roles being canned, and replaced by new ones with the JD written by the candidate themselves so that they’re guaranteed to get it.

That’s why I always try to speak to the hiring manager before applying internally. most have been quite open as to whether it’s a real interview or just ‘procedure’.

MrsBumm · 04/09/2021 14:32

so literally all they've said is "We can't do your interview on Friday, we will reschedule"? You are massively borrowing trouble then!
