How much electricity wasted before pulling the plug?

watsitcheeto · 02/09/2021 18:26

I’ve actually turned into my dad. I remember as a kid getting called in if I had left the TV on to turn it off.

Anyho, my boyfriend is the worst for leaving TVs on. He rarely turns them off - never from the wall if he does. More often than not he’ll have two on at once as he poodles from the kitchen to the living room.

Anyho, I’ve taken to just pulling the plugs if he’s left them for more than 15minutes which has turned into him moaning that he’s lost his game progress (Xbox) or whatever.

Just to put into context him moving in has cased my electricity bill to go up 8x higher but I have charged him extra board to cover it.

AIBU that it really pisses me off?

Electricity bills are 8x higher just because he leaves the TV on? Sure, Jan….

DuckDuckGooses · 02/09/2021 19:09

8x?!

What is he doing, growing a hot house in your loft?! Confused

Or were you living by candlelight and cooking on a gas bottle before he moved in? Grin

ThisBeTheName · 02/09/2021 19:13

What you are doing would drive me frigging mad - pulling TV plugs out from the wall?! TVs are basically computers, they need to reboot every time. Do you turn your computer off every time you're not using it for a bit?

Also, 8 times as much electricity? Seriously?

MatildaOfFlanders · 02/09/2021 19:28

Eight times??!!! Surely not.

Sparklesocks · 02/09/2021 19:28

It’s certainly annoying when people leave things on they aren’t using - my partner sometimes leaves all the lights on upstairs when he comes back down which also makes me roll my eyes (especially right before the big winter bill).

But equally your reaction sounds extreme. I don’t understand how long he can leave TVs on for that has led to your bill increasing so much?

EverybodyIsInteresting · 02/09/2021 19:31

What was your bill before, and what is it now?

Are you sure the increase isn't because your direct debit was too low? (Assuming you are paying by direct debit)

Hont1986 · 02/09/2021 19:32

If you were posting this about your boyfriend, people would be calling him miserly and maybe even abusive.

MatildaOfFlanders · 02/09/2021 19:36

Also, if you started pulling the plug on my stuff I wouldn’t be living there for very much longer.

girlmom21 · 02/09/2021 19:37

Why are you pulling plugs rather than just turning the tv off with the remote?

You're causing yourself higher costs doing that btw...

dementedpixie · 02/09/2021 19:38

I never unplug anything at the socket.

No way has this increased your bill by 8x

Genuine question, how does unplugging at the wall cause higher costs? I don't unplug at the wall but I do switch off at the wall when I finish watching TV, as I don't want to leave the TV on standby using power.

8x…suuuure

Horst · 02/09/2021 19:48

We never unplug anything. Although we do use over 8,800 KWh? A year so….

girlmom21 · 02/09/2021 19:49

@RichardMarxisinnocent same concept - lots of things that can be left on standby will need to completely reboot instead if turned off/unplugged at the wall.
Things like your virgin/sky box, WiFi etc will use more electricity rebooting than they would on standby.

GreenTortoise · 02/09/2021 19:49

I never turn the TV off. Do you whip the broadband plug out as well and only use tea lights by 8pm.

8x higher my arse.

GreenTortoise · 02/09/2021 19:49

I mean I never turn it off by the plug.

Newnamefor2021 · 02/09/2021 19:51

I never unplug. That's a strange idea. Yes switch off but not unplug.

Hont1986 · 02/09/2021 19:51

A TV on standby will use pennies worth of electricity per year. It's not worth bothering turning it off at the wall.

tobedtoMNandfart · 02/09/2021 19:52

Stinginess is unattractive.

DismantledKing · 02/09/2021 19:54

TVs used to have to be unplugged in the 70s and 80s because they had a tendency to catch fire. This doesn’t happen to modern ones.

Thank you, I wouldn't turn off my broadband router at the wall as I know it would then need to reboot. Pretty sure my non-smart fairly old TV doesn't do any rebooting? And it takes the same amount of time to turn on from standby as it does if it's been turned off at the wall. I guess a smart TV would be different.

mcdog · 02/09/2021 19:56

8x more expensive?!?!? Christ on a bike, were you living with one torch and a gas camping stove???

What...a...crock...

ThisBeTheName · 02/09/2021 19:57

He rarely turns them off - never from the wall if he does

Does anybody turn their TV off from the wall?!

As I and other PPs have said, that is a false economy. Look it up OP!

Iwanttobeapaperbackwriter · 02/09/2021 19:58

If it is 8x higher I'd go and have a look in your loft.....

But I'd honestly leave you if you kept unplugging my things that I was paying for

SylvanasWindrunner · 02/09/2021 20:02

Confused Eight times higher?! Also I'd be pissed off too if you went around yanking cables out when I was playing a game. It's really weird. Leaving a modern TV on standby costs like £1 a year.
