If I didn’t meet my friend today?

Hairbrush123 · 02/09/2021 07:01

I am meant to be meeting a friend today and sharing a car. We should be in the car for approximately 35 minutes and spending the day together in the city. However she has been complaining of a painful sore throat and her sinuses being congested. I am meant to go on holiday on Monday and require a negative test - I don’t really want to inadvertently catch covid if I don’t have to and would carry the same precautions if I wasn’t travelling.

She has taken a lateral flow which has come back negative however I know there is a chance it could be wrong. I really want to meet her but at the same time, if she’s displaying these symptoms, should I risk it? Thanks

No way!! Just don’t meet her, lateral flows are rubbish and she needs a PCR with symptoms. If she is a true friend she will understand!

TakeMe2Insanity · 02/09/2021 07:03

Most people I know who’ve had pcr holidays have pretty much self isolated beforehand.

mildlymiffed · 02/09/2021 07:04

I wouldn't. I'm sure she'll understand given your impending travel arrangements?

Tilly18101 · 02/09/2021 07:06

I wouldn’t risk it, not only has your friend got a illness (Covid or not!) you don’t want to catch anything before a holiday.

You are also at risk wandering round a city all day of catching Covid elsewhere. Whilst we have to live with the virus now, is it worth the risk before you go in holiday?

Meraas · 02/09/2021 07:07

YANBU, don’t do it. You will kick yourself if you get sick, whatever it is,

HungryHippo11 · 02/09/2021 07:08

I wouldn't.

This 100%
Hairbrush123 · 02/09/2021 07:11

Yes you are all right. I can’t risk it and have been avoiding going out unnecessarily. Thanks.

Don’t do it! I’ve caught covid off someone who has been doing daily lateral flow tests and they’ve all been negative! It was picked up on a PCR test, which was the only reason I knew to test myself!

Same here. In fact my friend didn't need a pcr (uk break) and still isolated. It wasn't worth the risk.

She should really get a pcr as those are classic delta symptoms- exactly what my brother had, got his positive on holiday and it spread through all of them causing them to have to isolate through most of their holiday and extend by a week so they can finish isolation. Not worth it imo.

happystory · 02/09/2021 07:25

Don't go, and if she doesn't understand why, she's a numpty.

Muchasgracias · 02/09/2021 08:02

I wouldn’t risk it and I’ve had friends cancel on me recently for similar reasons and that’s fine. Will she be out of pocket if you cancel? If so, you should offer to compensate.

ShingleBeach · 02/09/2021 08:26

Don’t spend time with her before your hol, and don’t go into a crowded city / shops etc.

Stay isolated and socially distanced.

Can’t think why you thought this was an idea even before her symptoms.

And even if it isn’t Covid she has, who wants to go on hol with a sore throat?

ShingleBeach · 02/09/2021 08:28

With those symptoms, has she taken a PCR?

Anyway, don’t go into the city.

Aprilx · 02/09/2021 08:54

It sounds like she has a cold coming on not covid. But you could catch covid from anyone else, I would be staying at home as much as possible if I needed a negative PCR test for my holiday.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/09/2021 08:57

I agree you could catch covid from anyone while out. I think if I had booked a holiday that required a pcr and spent a lot of money on it, I’d self isolate except for walks etc too.

I can’t really deal with self isolating with the kids (unless I have to obviously!) so I haven’t gone abroad.

Softpebbles · 02/09/2021 09:09

My DD has had similar symptoms, full of cold, sinuses, coughing (think due to snot). Negative PCR and LFT's. There are other bugs circulating and not just covid.

Alonelonelyloner · 02/09/2021 09:11

DO NOT MEET FRIEND.

Not worth the risk.

Noshowwithoutpunch · 02/09/2021 09:12

I'd not go.
Even if she doesn't have it someone you come across today could.

AlrightThereSkippy · 02/09/2021 09:13

I'd also be mostly isolating if I wanted to go abroad at the moment! Stay at home (so you can get away Smile)

TodayIsYesterday · 02/09/2021 09:14

I wouldn’t meet your friend, it seems sensible to isolate yourself as much as possible if you’re going on holiday.

Dizzy1234 · 02/09/2021 09:19

Don't meet her, I've just been abroad and I practically self isolated beforehand just in case.
If you test positive abroad you'll end up in an isolation hotel that's apart from the dangers of catching covid then add being ill in a foreign country

Hairbrush123 · 02/09/2021 09:49

It’s a good thing I didn’t meet her and said no. She tested positive three times on the LFT. I will continue to self isolate until I go away. Thanks guy for the help.

Yes carry on isolating as much as you can, I wish I had! I'm currently at home with covid and was meant to be on holiday right now but got symptoms 2 days before the flight and had to cancel.
Gutted!
And no idea where I caught it, hadn't seen any friends or family but had been to work.

SolitaryTree · 02/09/2021 11:42

So glad you decided not to meet up so you can enjoy your holiday!
I’ve booked our first holiday abroad in what will be 4 years for next summer and if (and I highly imagine it will be) the testing is still a requirement then we will be pretty much isolating for 10 days beforehand.
I don’t think it’s worth the risk of not being able to go.
