Smokers: how much do you spend on your habit per week?

Ashlils · 01/09/2021 18:38

Long term smoker of 10 years. My habit rocketed after a period of high stress and I'm now formulating a plan to quit after looking at the finances and realising I'm wasting hundreds of pounds every month, not to mention the detrimental effect on my health. My aim is to have quit completely within 4 weeks! no lectures please, I'm trying

Those of you who smoke (or did) how much was you spending per week/month?

I used to smoke about 5 cigs a day, 10 if it was a bad day. I smoked Marlboro gold so spent a lot of money per packet. I stopped cold turkey when I saw a picture of what my lungs would look like. It’s been over a year now and I feel amazing. I’m no longer struggling to breathe doing small things and the smell is something I never realised.

I can smell if someone is a smoker now more so than other people.

You can do this! It’s hard but after a month all my cravings were gone. Everytime you crave a cig, google what your lungs look like and you’ll stop have the craving go.

Warsawa31 · 01/09/2021 19:42

About 9 quid a day :( up to last year - I've been using velo nicotine bags which you put under your lip - it's more like a continuation of the habit and enjoyable rather than nicotine replacement therapy.

Give it a try but whatever you do best of luck

Ehhhhhhhh · 01/09/2021 19:42

I used to buy a packet a day and two if I was going out/ drinking. So around £90 - £100 a week.

I have cut down in recent years, I probably buy around 5 or 6 packs a week now, but only pay £6 a packet currently.

Mydogisagentleman · 01/09/2021 19:52

I have been smoking since I was 12. I am now 57.
Packet a day, sometimes 2 so lots of money.
I have given up using Champix a couple of times, but never learn that 1 won’t hurt.
It does

maras2 · 01/09/2021 19:56

I quit (cold turkey) when I realised that I was paying £150 a month.
This was the same as our mortgage payments, only 13 years ago.
I'd smoked for over 40 years.
I think that the amount saved by not smoking was the cost of our first house. Shock
Good luck on your N/S journey. Flowers (you'll be able to smell them when you quit} Smile

tttigress · 01/09/2021 20:03

I quite when they were £5 per pack, which seemed like madness at the time!

Like another poster, I used to buy 2 packs before going out on a Saturday night, and would be know to buy a third while out. I cringe to think what I must have smelt like (obviously I didn't realise).

My biggest weakness was want a coffee and a cigarette or wine/beer and a cigarette.

tttigress · 01/09/2021 20:03

Quit, not quite!

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 01/09/2021 20:04

I quit about 6 years ago and was probably spending about £35 per week and that seemed like a lot to me. I stopped when I realised that I didn't want my ds associating the smell of smoke with the safety and comfort he got from me. I haven't had one since and I know I'm lucky as I don't even get cravings.

My ddad always said to me "never quit quitting" when it came to cigarettes and he was right. Good luck @Ashlils with quitting!

FannyBrice · 01/09/2021 20:25

Unfashionable but I enjoyed smoking at the time. I stopped with no problem but I still vape
Don't be hard on yourself, try different ways to find what fits you
I probably spent £80 a week and this was years ago

Shitfuckcommaetc · 01/09/2021 20:27

I smoke tobacco, so spend around £15 per week

Mrsjayy · 01/09/2021 20:30

I stopped when my brand was nearly£10 a packet we both smoked so it was over £100 a week Blush you. Can do it we booked a holiday and put our fag money in an account. Everybody knows the health issues so we focused on the money aspects

MummyInTheNecropolis · 01/09/2021 20:31

I quit 5 years ago and switched to vaping. At the time I was spending a minimum of £50 a week on cigarettes, now I spend £10 a month on vape liquids. Such a huge difference!

Rumplestrumpet · 01/09/2021 20:37

I quit 15 years ago after 10+ years of at least a pack a day. I wasn't earning much and it was taking a lot of my wages but the thing that made me quit was that I'd developed a breathing problem because of smoking. It was really scary as I was still in my 20s and knew it was only gonna get worse. I used Alan Carr's Easy Way To Quit Smoking book and never looked back.
I out the money aside and it paid for driving lessons and insurance for my first car. It felt so liberating.

Go for it and don't doubt yourself. Try the Alan Carr book if you haven't already. Good luck

AaalrightyThen · 01/09/2021 20:39

Haven't smoked for about twenty years and the cost of 20 cigarettes is mind boggling to me now, especially when I consider that back in the day smoking 40 or more a day was not unusual (not me but people I knew, grandparents etc). A forty a day habit could be £140 a week now! (Unless buying multipacks or buying knocks off which surely you would need to at that price).
Public health initiatives to increase the price, ban advertising and ruin branding efforts by having most of the packet taken up by pictures of diseased lungs etc are great examples of what can be done to reduce unhealthy behaviours - just look at how rates of smoking have decreased.
Good luck to you in your efforts to stop, you can do this!

sylbunny · 01/09/2021 20:44

I smoke 1-3 fags a day at the moment. A pack of rolling baccy at about £15 lasts me a month. I spend another & £20 a month on nicotine lozenges to keep my smoking down!

OnceTheyDid · 01/09/2021 20:56

My mum smokes 40 a day.. which it about £140 a week.....

Over £7,000 a YEAR !

Equivalent to £350,000 over the last 50 years.

Madness

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/09/2021 20:58

Ex-smoker (30 plus years ag). Hate it now. Not digging at you at all, I get the attraction.
How the holy f**k do you manage hundreds of pounds a month, though?
It was expensive enough when I was young with cash to throw away.

SquirryTheSquirrel · 01/09/2021 20:59

I roll my own cigs so it costs me about £25 a week for tobacco, filters and papers.

vodkaredbullgirl · 01/09/2021 21:02

Roll my own, lot cheaper than a packet of fags. Don't even know how much a packet costs these days.

Mrsdoubtfireswig · 01/09/2021 21:05

I quit 7 years ago and was spending around £150-200 a month

I tried many many times to quit but in the end good old fashioned cold turkey worked. I also wrote a list of benefits, however big / small to motivate me and saved the money to buy a things I had wanted for ages as a reward. The first thing was a handbag for £100, second was a dishwasher ! After 6 weeks it all did get a lot easier to deal with and I’ve never been tempted or had one since

I also had an app tracker for years - well after id stopped physically saving / spending. Seeing it hit £10,000 was quite a moment - I don’t know how I would have afforded to carry on

00100001 · 01/09/2021 21:06

I'm amazed so many people still smoke

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/09/2021 21:11

Don’t think they do. Youngsters smoking is such a rarity (where we are, anyway) that I always do a double take when I see one.

Mrsjayy · 01/09/2021 21:14

I work alongside a young girl she is 17/18 and I smell smoke off her I am really surprised youngsters smoke these days.

Mrsjayy · 01/09/2021 21:15

And isn't stale she definitely has a cigarette before she comes in the building.

houseonthehill · 01/09/2021 21:21

Big jump in younger smokers over the past year, I read somewhere.

I roll my own and have done for 40 years. Current cost is about a fiver a day. So a couple of takeaway coffees, or a glass of wine in a pub?
