To report inlaws for tax fraud

User112 · 01/09/2021 01:01

My inlaws have likely committed tax fraud on about 60k (in another country). It feels so wrong when so many hard working people pay their taxes.

Aibu to report them?

OP posts:
LakieLady · 01/09/2021 08:28

I wonder how many of the answers on here would be the same if the OP was asking about benefit fraud, rather than tax fraud?

OnwardsAndSideways1 · 01/09/2021 08:30

Given that it's only 'likely', given that it's abroad, I'd keep out of it all. I'd keep out of it all anyway, I don't think it's my business what my friends and family do with their finances.

TriciaMcMillan · 01/09/2021 08:33

As the official moral arbiter of the internet I say...... 'YES'

You must now make it so.

Next question?

Confiscatedpopit · 01/09/2021 08:33

FFS. The shit I read on here sometimes never fails to amaze! If this is true I’m always stunned how much others know about other peoples’ financial situations too. Rich or poor, I’ve always kept that stuff private. I don’t want to really know about others either.

Simple answer- No OP, no you should not. I’d say the same if it was benefits, anything. Pond life behaviour.

Marni83 · 01/09/2021 08:33

What a surprise
Search on op’s name
Terrible relationship with in laws!

viques · 01/09/2021 08:38

@SpeakingFranglais

Why would you start a post at 1am then disappear?
I think the in-laws realised they were in tax fraud danger and took appropriate steps. You know you should never mess with dangerous possible tax fraud in laws and threaten them with disclosure on an anonymous internet chat page.. Let that be a warning to us all. RIP OP.
Blossomtoes · 01/09/2021 08:39

@NommyChompers

Please report - for all of us who pay our fair share of tax!
Will that reduce the amount of tax I pay? No.

Keep your beak out @User112

Lalliella · 01/09/2021 08:41

How likely? What have they done?

Beautiful3 · 01/09/2021 08:46

No. They're close family.

Livelovebehappy · 01/09/2021 08:50

I’m guessing there’s a big back story to why you feel the need to report your in-laws for fraud without any concrete evidence, but hey, if it makes you feel happy and gives you some satisfaction then go for it. Must be a lot of hate there to be even thinking about it, and probably says more about you than them.

Agree. There’s a different moral compass on here between tax fraud and benefit fraud. On mumsnet, benefit fraud is absolutely fine; any other fraud, not so much.
Totallydefeated · 01/09/2021 08:56

What kind of arsehole would shop their own family to the Taxman??

maddening · 01/09/2021 08:58

Tax evasion or tax avoidance? You have to be sure what has taken place as one is illegal and one is legal.

I don't think I would report in your case, what is your motivation for doing so? Are you prepared to destroy your relationship with them for this?

GreekMIL · 01/09/2021 09:20

I couldn't get worked up over £60k when big business and billionaires avoid paying millions in tax and get away with it.

bearandowl · 01/09/2021 09:27

No. Stay away. You are being unreasonable.

As others are saying big business avoid paying tax big time - Amazon pays no corporation tax in Europe despite €44bn sales.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 01/09/2021 09:33

I don't believe this thread is real. But just in case some loon is out there planning to shop her ILs to the inland revenue, only proceed if you want a divorce - no spouse will forgive you for this or support you. Also be 100% certain because there are also laws around slandering people and malicious allegations.

Lotusmonster · 01/09/2021 09:33

Oh fgs, just get a life and leave well alone.

Therealjudgejudy · 01/09/2021 09:36

You need a hobby...

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/09/2021 09:37

GreekMil. I also take it that you couldn’t get worked up about a single mother working for an extra 50 per week on quiet as well.
After all we can’t have one rule the rich and one for the poor now, can we. We all know what they say about Geese and Gander.

NautaOcts · 01/09/2021 09:39

Are you an international tax specialist?

LivingOnAnIsland · 01/09/2021 09:40

Tax fraud means that there is less money available to pay for public services etc. Just saying - it can and does affect everyone.

DiddyDiddums · 01/09/2021 09:44

I wouldn’t do this to a stranger, let alone family. What is wrong with you?

LookAtMoiPloise · 01/09/2021 09:50

@LakieLady

My answer would remain the exact same.
GreekMIL · 01/09/2021 09:52

@Awwlookatmybabyspider No, I couldn't get worked up over that either. Who would?

Plumtree391 · 01/09/2021 09:54

Are you for real?

I presume your in laws have paid and probably do pay tax in their lives.

You don't grass people up for things like that and anyway you don't know the full facts.
