To use a sofa bed every night?

My son is moving into a student flat with a tiny bedroom and I wondered if he would be better with a small sofa bed rather than a bed. Is it okay to sleep on one every night? Does anyone have a super comfy one? Thanks

I did for a while and it really hurt my shoulders. Might be my somewhat older body though. When I was a student of sleep on a floor under a coat! Mine was a mid range IKEA one.

pleaseletthecatout · 30/08/2021 22:22

They're not really suitable for every night.

Notjustanymum · 30/08/2021 22:27

Depends how thick the mattress is. We got a nice one from DFS for a long-term guest in our annexe and they assure me it’s very comfortable.

FirewomanSam · 30/08/2021 22:30

Lots of people do this but it does need to be a decent sofa bed, which can be pricey. When you buy a sofa bed they usually state whether they’re meant for occasional use or built for heavier use. We have one in our guest bedroom that claims it’s suitable for nightly use but I would be reluctant to do that as I imagine it would start to sag eventually.

Honestly though, as a student I always lived in tiny bedrooms that were 90% bed and I was fine, it was totally the norm. Your bed just kind of becomes your whole world. I used to work, watch TV on my laptop and (yes gross I know) often even eat on mine. I think as a student I’d much rather just have a bed and very little room for anything else, than a sofabed I had to pull out and make up every day, even if it meant a little extra floor space!

JanglyBeads · 30/08/2021 22:38

I do and it’s fine. But I paid something like £450 inc delivery (a lot to me at the time)
Small ones available from wee.sofabedbarn.com. I have the memory foam mattress.

JanglyBeads · 30/08/2021 22:38

*www not wee!

Beowoulf · 30/08/2021 22:44

My cousin ended up opting for a sofa bod for this reason as there just wasn't a lot of room for a single bed, it also meant she has a double bed of sorts so she'd be more comfortable. As others have said she had to pay quite a bit for a pretty decent one for comfort. The only con for her was opening it up every night and then closing it in the morning as it was quite heavy to pull out and then put back as a sofa in the morning.

lilmishap · 30/08/2021 22:47

You can get sofa beds for every night but they are pricey.

Why not just a bed with the extra side/back on? are they called day beds?

The process of getting a sofa bed out and making them every night is a PITA and not something that many would bother with when drunk so it may end up just being out all the time....also a bit crap for (ahem) 'overnight guests' he may bring home.

It will also rob him off under bed storage space.

I'd sooner have no space and a decent bed tbf, I'm in the box room of my house and have a bed with storage underneath thats full of my clothes.

I'd say YABU, get him a bed.

*of not off

mowly77 · 30/08/2021 22:49

He won’t be arsed to get it out and out it back every night (not personal; no one can!) & it will just stay out the whole time and be pointless.

Emelene · 30/08/2021 22:50

Is there anyway to add a mattress topper? I used a chair bed most nights for a few months. I did get used to it but it was quite hard and would hurt my back sometimes. :/

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 30/08/2021 22:50

I’ve got a sofa bed that was billed as an every night one. It’s from Made.com and is box sprung, which i think is the key.

It’s not actually for every night, it’s so that older people can sleep in it and not be uncomfortable. It was pricey though.

If he's moving into a flat with mates then how much time will he really be in his room? He'll probably socialise in the communal areas, and a sofa is no comfier to study on than a bed with a few decent pillows (assuming he really doesn't have space for a desk). If it's a studio and he's on his own then a day bed could be a good option if he's bothered. Like a PP said, you could spend £££ on a decent sofa bed and I bet he wouldn't bother taking it all apart more than once a week to put it into the sofa arrangement.

If the flat comes furnished you'd also have to get the landlord to agree to remove and store the bed that comes with the room, and I've heard of LL's refusing in similar scenarios.

Shelddd · 30/08/2021 23:13

Just get him a bed. Everyone just has a bed, it's normal. Its cheaper to get a good bed than a good sofa bed as well. A good sofa bed is going to cost you in excess of 1000 whereas you can get a half decent mattress for a couple hundred that will probably be more comfortable.

Do not do this, that will be incredibly uncomfortable compared to even a cheap mattress.

Tigertigertigertiger · 30/08/2021 23:15

Of course it’s ok

minipie · 30/08/2021 23:26

A single bed takes no more space than a sofa though.

If you want him to have the option of a double, I’d get a single bed with one of those trundles with legs that unfold to make it a double. Much comfier than a sofa bed which always have thin mattresses (the traditional sort) or are really hard (the click clack sort).

Also in reality he’s not going to bother folding and unfolding his bed the whole time is he? He’ll be too busy —having fun— studying. So if he has a sofa he’ll just end up kipping on it as a sofa or leaving it out as a bed.

LittleBrenda · 30/08/2021 23:29

Why can't he just sit on his bed? I don't think I spent much time at all on sofas when I was at university.

You are either
Out at lectures/pub/library/work
In bed

Cherrysoup · 31/08/2021 00:18

A decent single mattress on the floor might be better, decent support, at least. How about a cabin bunk bed thing, so study area underneath?

melj1213 · 31/08/2021 00:53

As a student I would never have bothered changing a sofa bed backwards and forwards every day. If he's moving in with friends then don't they have a living room/communal space to hang out because of so then he is less likely to be using his bedroom for more than sleeping.

I had a tiny room in uni halls where we had no living room (we had some chairs in the corner of the kitchen) and I just used to make my bed up to be like a sofa whenever friends came round and we were hanging out in my room as my desk was directly opposite so I just put my TV on there and it was the perfect set up.

The bed was fixed against the wall anyway so duvet straightened, pillows propped against the wall as back support and a blanket over the top of it all (so people weren't sitting directly on my bed) with a couple of cushions and it looked exactly like a sofa but all I had to do was chuck the blanket and cushions in a basket and put the pillows in the right place when I wanted to sleep.

Quitelikeacatslife · 31/08/2021 00:58

They will never be arsed to fold it away so may as well have decent bed. Teenager are used to chilling on their bed, maybe get them a nice throw and cushions to put on bed so more like sofa.

BadHipRising · 31/08/2021 01:07

Yes it won't get changed over at all by a student so will just be a permanent bed but a slightly uncomfortable one. Better to have a throw. You can get nice ones in Dunelm.

Also it doesn't really save space if you are pretty much living in one room because you need to have somewhere to put the duvet etc during the day. Nice idea in theory but probably not worth it.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 31/08/2021 01:07

Murphy bed with a desk? Probably overkill and expensive.

Daybed would be better for the average student. Best of both worlds really, comfy bed and big couch.

I have one of the click-clack sofas that someone else mentioned in the the spare room/office/whatever room in my house. It would be the next suggestion but honestly would still need to be made up every night. That doesn’t seem like highest on the priority list for students.

It sort of works for me because we don’t have a lot of overnight guests. But it I’m honest it’s not the comfiest sofa in the world.

WaterIsBest · 31/08/2021 01:22

How about ‘A day bed’ ?
Ikea do a good one.

A’sofa in the day, but a proper bed at night
