I have no friends to go with and only single seats left anyway, should I go on my own?

I went to see a comedian on my own last week at Edinburgh festival fringe

Cissyandflora · 30/08/2021 20:59

Definitely! I go out on my own more than I do with others. I love it!

OnTheBoardwalk · 30/08/2021 21:00

Oh yes. I travelled and worked in London every week before Covid. First time I went to show on my own I looked on the day and got a front row seat for show that had shown sold out for months

I ended up next to the photographer who disappeared after half an hour so had loads of room. I even had people asking me how I got such a great seat

Go for it

youvegottenminuteslynn · 30/08/2021 21:01

I did this in my early 20s once and ended up dating the comedian for a few months Grin

@MurielSpriggs

I love stand-up and quite often go alone. Normally the more informal room-above-a-pub type of thing. All I'd say is that I'm usually twice the age of anyone there, and I've often noticed organisers and off-duty comedians giving me the side eye. In the end I realised that it's because they think I'm some sort of talent scout Grin
That exact thing has happened to me. At small theatres etc. I’m old and fat and out of place. I’ve noticed I’ve caught the eye of people on stage and I’m so embarrassed because they must think I’m some sort of rep. I’m just out on my own.
MenaiMna · 30/08/2021 21:03

Oh yes! One of life's great pleasures is stand up comedy, and you don't have to worry about whether your companion has same sense of humour/is embarrassed by rude jokes etc if you don't take one with you! I prefer to sit middle or back of the hall out of the range of the stage to audience banter. When I was young I was always at music and comedy gigs now that I have middle-aged ears music is better recorded but comedy is great live! Go on-have a laugh!

amusedbush · 30/08/2021 21:04

Yes! I’ve booked myself a ticket to see Sarah Millican next year because DH can’t stand her and there were a couple of really good single seats left at my local venue.

I go to the cinema and theatre alone so I reckon I’ll enjoy it just the same!

Niffler92 · 30/08/2021 21:18

Thanks all, I've been to see things on my own before when travelling and at the fringe and I enjoy it, this feels strange because it's in my town and I already feel like a not mate loner here, because despite having hundreds of acquaintances I have no friends (but thats another thread).

Which town and comedian? If you're local and I like them I'll go with you!

Niffler92 · 30/08/2021 22:39

Janey Godley only a few random single tickets left anyway

I don't pay much attention to who else is in a theatre / comedy audience but on the odd occasion that I notice someone on their own I tend to think it's cool of them!

Beowoulf · 30/08/2021 23:00

Yes, you should definitely go! Me and my friend were meant to watch Lee Evans a god few years back and she had to pull out last minute due to her having the bug and she offered to give me her ticket so I could take someone else in her stead but I couldn't find anyone so ended up going on my own and it was fabulous and I had a fantastic time.

EverybodyIsInteresting · 30/08/2021 23:18

I went to several shows at the fringe on my own this month. The single seats were often the first to sell out (they were selling seats in 'bubbles' with social distancing)

Go! You'll love it. Nobody else cares who you are there with (or not with). And it's very freeing not waiting around to see if you can get other people interested in something before just deciding to do it.

MargotMoon · 30/08/2021 23:24

You would hope that her audience would be one you'd feel comfortable sitting in as a solo woman 👍

Hope you decide to go and that you have a great time!

Duchess379 · 30/08/2021 23:36

I've been to concerts on my own & made friends once there. Definitely do it, you'll have a great time 👍🏼

bananabread2000 · 30/08/2021 23:51

100% I've been to many different comedians on my own. My DH and friends don't always know or enjoy the same comedy as me so rather than fork out for extra tickets (plus babysitters) for something they aren't bothered about I happily go on my own and it's always great! :D
