What's the best thing you did at your wedding

Something you're glad you spent money on? Or didn't think would matter but definitely did?

A month to go and planning is under control so I'm looking for anything we might have missed to make the day even more special (around 90 guests, non-church, in the countryside).

We had a fairly simpel wedding ( reg office ) and the reception at a big pub that had a separate to the main bar with its own entrance / bar / loos etc so no gate crashers . And a couple of rooms to hire .

I am very luck to know wonderful group that play classical music and when I told gueat we were haveing them at the start of the evening a few gave us some odd looks as that was not their kind of thing , however my friends also played loads of hits and the DJ has a great voice so sang the with them , think Aerosmith been played on cello and kettle drum ! they went down a blast .

After about a hour the DJ took over for a bit singing request and playing music then turned the karaoke on .

We kept the food simple, 2 huge hotpot pies and some chicken drumsticks / sausage - cheese rolls crisps and dips

We didnt have a free bar as such but as everyone came in we handed them a token ( like a casino chip ) and told them they could use it at the bar to buy what ever they wanted , later in the night we handed out more that way so it did not cost us a bomb but everyone got a few free drinks that they were not expecting .

But the best thing ,
At the end of the night when all the guest had gone we went to the main part of the pub , kicked our shoes off and had a pint with the landlord and a few of the bar staff , then staggered upstairs to bed.

As PP have said make sure that once the party is in full swing and everybody is happy that you and DH bugger off for a bit and take a bit of time to soak it all in .

Had a ceilidh.

BikeRunSki · 29/08/2021 22:06

@AChickenCallrdDaal, we didn’t even book a car, we were far too tight! It was literally a minute’s walk! We

Cannes12 · 29/08/2021 22:10

Videographer

BikeRunSki · 29/08/2021 22:12

No our wedding, but the thing that stands out from all the weddings I’ve been to was afternoon tea. 3 pm service, few mins of group photos of friends, then friends sent into church hall for afternoon tea at about 4pm, whilst all the family/best man etc did their more extensive photos.

Kids table with crafts, games, kids party food laid out in the church hall too.

Squidlydoo · 29/08/2021 22:14

We booked a videographer a month before our wedding. I was so glad we did. Yes we have 900 photos but the 3 and 15 minute highlight videos are (10 years later) the best money we spent.

It transports us back immediately to the day and makes me feel very emotional!

I remember waking up the next morning and saying “ I’m so glad we videod the day” and I really was! It was the best money spent:

The wedding night sex was amazing.

Practically - the food was great, there was plenty of wine, we put on a bus and had crackers for place markers with magic fish and mints in them.

Cookie79 · 29/08/2021 22:17

We had meat and potato pie (with options of red cabbage, mushy peas etc) in the evening. SO good and went down well with guests.

I have attended a wedding where the groomsmen went round the tables before the speeches doing a sweep on how long the best man’s speech would last and the winner would get the pot (£1 a go). That was really funny 😁

saywhatwhatnow · 29/08/2021 22:19

Plenty of food, and a bar open as soon as we got to the reception venue. Lots of people don't just want to drink table wine during the meal and speeches, so it meant everyone could have whatever they wanted whenever they wanted.

otherstuffteam · 29/08/2021 22:21

Great music from DJ and a fabulous band.

Informal family photos

itssoooofluffy · 29/08/2021 22:22

Videographer, I love our photos, but the video is something else, best money we spent by far!

Sosigsandwich · 29/08/2021 22:24

Amazing food and a fab band, hate DJs!

OlivesTree · 29/08/2021 22:25

Married my husband. None of the rest matters really.

MatildaOfFlanders · 29/08/2021 22:25

Free bar, courtesy of a very generous father-in-law.

City centre venue that was easy for everyone to get to and plenty of (reasonably priced) accommodation for anyone travelling.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 29/08/2021 22:26

Kept numbers to those I wanted to see me take my vows, no two tier guests, covered the costs of food, drink and transport for guests and few formal photos so no waiting around. Having spent too much on attending weddings or waiting around for hours bored whilst the photos were being done I planned mine with guests in mind.

MilkywayMonarch22 · 29/08/2021 22:26

1.) Photo booth van - loads of people took silly photos with props it was amazing. And it kept all the children entertained for ages, we've got loads of pics where the kids had been sneaking in and taking crazy photos with each other.

2.) A face painter (amazing one at that!). We had a lot of children (like 20/30) at the wedding and they loved this. Kept them busy and kept parents happy as they weren't bored.

3.) Pizza truck - delicious, casual and food available to grab for a few hours if you were peckish again

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 29/08/2021 22:27

I'm glad l spent money on the registrar so we were actually married 😉

TheDogsMother · 29/08/2021 22:27

Finally getting to say I do. We had some lovely plans then came Covid so the spring time wedding turned into a restricted version in October. So happy that it did actually take place though.

Sunshineboo · 29/08/2021 22:27

french fancies instead of wedding cake.

i love them, bought hundreds for less than two tiers m&s special!

Echobelly · 29/08/2021 22:29

We learned to swing dance as a surprise for everyone for our first dance. We were still totally rubbish on the day, as neither of us is a dancer, but no one cared and thought it was amazing we did it at all. My sister cried when we finished, apparently. Grin

@SnotandBothered - there is a bit like that built in to Jewish weddings, the yichud - we got to just be alone together for 10 minutes after the ceremony and it was fantastic.

ruthieness · 29/08/2021 22:30

Taking off high heels and putting on comfortable shoes -

However sure you are that your shoes will be fine - always have a reliable back up!

annacondom · 29/08/2021 22:31

We had quite a small wedding but had a ceilidh band in the evening and invited loads of people. Really good fun. I danced with my dad, which is a special memory

craigsgirlfriend · 29/08/2021 22:32

Sister bought a giant jenga game for the garden. Impromptu drinking game ensued with teams.
We also lit some Chinese lanterns in the garden.
No favours but a Lindt chocolate in everyone's glass when they sat down. People are normally hungry and a little sugar rush.
Oasis sing along to end the night 😂

SnotandBothered · 29/08/2021 22:33

@cluecu

Very cheap but lots of people commented, we made sure we had a photograph printed of every guest and they were strewn around as bunting in the windows. Everything is generally about the bride and groom so it was nice to see people see themselves up there as well as their reaction to seeing theirselves Smile
This is lovely.
cantpooinpeace · 29/08/2021 22:36

Had a Queen medley!
