My DS is 12,and an early developer, big growth spurt,
hes having breakouts, daily deodorant and a few small dark hairs underarms
a bit of moodiness, all, if not a bit early, but normal starting points

This morning whilst making breakfast i noticed his voice sounded deeper but simultaneously squeaky, but definitely doesn't have a cold or anything I did say anything but thought surely it can't be that time yet? Confused he'll be done by the times he's 13 at this rate!
Anyone else experienced this with their DS's?

My son was 10 and a half, just heading into year 6 when he hit puberty. It was a shock! I don't think it's unusual though now

shouldistop · 27/08/2021 10:23

Looks like it's normal

DS was 11 when his started, he’s 12 now.
To be fair he does look about 15 though

PurBal · 27/08/2021 10:24

I thought your post was going to say he’s 8. I think 12 is normal.

FunnysInLaJardin · 27/08/2021 10:24

Yes DS1 was about 12 when his started to break. It sounded like he had a cold, but then we realised what it was!

Seeline · 27/08/2021 10:25

My DS started in a Junior form at secondary in Y6, so met up with a whole group of new boys. Some of them looked and sounded like men - I was taken by surprise as my DS was still very definitely a little boy.

Emmelina · 27/08/2021 10:28

As a teacher, I’ve waved a lot of 11 year olds off into year 7 with their voices starting to go! Absolutely normal :)

Clymene · 27/08/2021 10:28

Completely normal. 12 is a very normal time to start puberty. When were you expecting it to start? Confused

MsWalterMitty · 27/08/2021 10:29

Yeah, same here with my son too. He’s 12 in Sept. His voice started to change about a year ago, he’s 5’6, talker than me 😱 and in size 10 shoes!!!... He’s scrawny though 🤣 with no shoulder definition and weighs a 1 1/2 stone lighter than me... he’s 7.5 stone. I expect the muscle mass to come in the next couple of years.

He has lots of breakouts on his face, we use Body Shop Aloe face wash which seems to help a lot, but struggling with the blackheads! He is hairy in places and stinks if he doesn’t shower daily.

My baby is still there though.. he loves his hugs 🥰

Purpletomato · 27/08/2021 10:30

Totally normal.

Tinkerbellfluffyboots79 · 27/08/2021 10:33

I have 4 boys, never really noticed the voice my 11 year old has been quite developed for a while now he’s the youngest of the 4 to start that young (9) 10 year old hasn’t yet at all.

toomuchlaundry · 27/08/2021 10:34

Normal

Regularsizedrudy · 27/08/2021 10:43

That sounds totally normal

PasstheBucket89 · 27/08/2021 10:48

@MsWalterMitty oh sounds very similar to ds!!! he's literally head and shoulders above the rest, about 5"6, i dread every growth spurt Shock I hope ds finds some friends in a similar boat, all of his friends still very much little boys. must be isolating sometimes

OP posts:
shouldistop · 27/08/2021 10:49

I don't think kids really care much or find it isolating so I wouldn't worry too much. In about 6 months most of the other boys will be in the same boat.

clary · 27/08/2021 10:53

Yes absolutely. When I taught I often used to have year 8 classes that swung from tiny lads with squeaky voices to sudden giants looming over me with a very deep "ja, hier" (MFL) in the register. A lot used to come back into yr 8 after the summer with a distinct change in register and they would be 12 or perhaps just 13.

If yr DS is taller the smaller ones (like DS2 who was less than 5ft in yr 7/8) will just be a bit jealous.

Xiaoxiong · 27/08/2021 10:54

I was thinking about this watching speech day in July at my DS's school - half of the Y8 leavers seemed already to be adult height with broken voices, the other half were still very much young boys with unbroken voices. It's such a mixed bag in terms of when it starts but according to the red book puberty for boys is considered precocious if before 9 years old, delayed if no signs before 14, and delayed if still not complete by 17. So I would say your DS is pretty normal and all his friends will start catching up soon!

BananaMilkshakeWithCream · 27/08/2021 10:56

Surely 12 isn’t young? I thought you were going to say 8 or something 😂

ThanksIGotItInMorrisons · 27/08/2021 10:57

I think kids are hitting puberty much earlier. It used to be normal around 16/17/18. Now girls are getting periods at 10! They are being forced by some evolutionary development to grow up
Much too fast. They don’t seem to have long enough as kids anymore before they’re all duckfacing in skintight dresses on tiktok and shaving their faces at 14!

DaxtheDestroyer · 27/08/2021 10:57

Sounds totally normal. My DS is at a chorister school (although not a chorister) and they expect all boy choristers to have finished voice breaking by the end of year 9 (age 13/14).

shesellsseacats · 27/08/2021 10:57

DS's voice broke at 12. And he loves being tall. Please don't give your DS a complex about it, he might pick it up from you if you think it's a negative thing.

BearSoFair · 27/08/2021 10:58

Very normal. DS1's voice started to crack the week he started secondary school. DS2 is 12 next month and no real noticeable change yet.

ThanksIGotItInMorrisons · 27/08/2021 10:59

I am aware that there have always been kids hitting puberty quite early, before you all tell
Me wee Jeanie in my class was a woman at 7. I just mean it seems to be earlier and earlier. My friend group were all
Much older than my dc friend groups are hitting puberty now.

shouldistop · 27/08/2021 11:01

@ThanksIGotItInMorrisons children in the west are going into puberty earlier, it's to do with eating more and some say to do with hormones in our food.
