My DS is 12,and an early developer, big growth spurt,
hes having breakouts, daily deodorant and a few small dark hairs underarms
a bit of moodiness, all, if not a bit early, but normal starting points

This morning whilst making breakfast i noticed his voice sounded deeper but simultaneously squeaky, but definitely doesn't have a cold or anything I did say anything but thought surely it can't be that time yet? Confused he'll be done by the times he's 13 at this rate!
Anyone else experienced this with their DS's?
@MsWalterMitty oh sounds very similar to ds!!! he's literally head and shoulders above the rest, about 5"6, i dread every growth spurt Shock I hope ds finds some friends in a similar boat, all of his friends still very much little boys. must be isolating sometimes
My ds has a couple of friends who a tiny and another who is similar size. He starts secondary school in Sept and tbh I’m quite pleased (as is he) that he’s one of the taller ones. Thinks he’ll blend in better as he’s quite shy... and he won’t have older kids staring at how ‘cute’ he is!

I think kids are hitting puberty much earlier. It used to be normal around 16/17/18. Now girls are getting periods at 10! They are being forced by some evolutionary development to grow up Much too fast. They don’t seem to have long enough as kids anymore before they’re all duckfacing in skintight dresses on tiktok and shaving their faces at 14!
Evolution takes more than 50 years Hmm

I don't think 12 is particularly early, pretty average. I thought you were going to say DS was 8 or 9. There's usually a few whose voices go in year 6 so age 10/11, before secondary school. 12 is quite normal.

PasstheBucket89 · 27/08/2021 12:24

thanks for the replies, I suppose it must be pretty normal

It was 20 years ago now but when I was that age, 12 or 13 was the standard age for voices breaking and periods starting, for most kids.

gabsdot45 · 27/08/2021 13:09

Total normal. My son had a friend who's voice broks6when he was about 12.i used to think there was some bloke playing out on the garden with DS.

heyyellowyellow · 27/08/2021 13:10

My 13 year old has a ‘proper’ man’s voice. When he and his 13 year old friends are gaming together online and he isn’t wearing his headphones, I feel as though I have 4 adult men in the house.

a8mint · 27/08/2021 13:13

DS1 voice broke at 11. He was the smallest in his class and had the deepest voice!

Ozanj · 27/08/2021 13:14

Totally normal. I had boys in my class with full beards and deep voices by the time they were 13-14. They still grew in height right up until 18-21.

Tillylantern · 27/08/2021 13:16

Ds his voice had finished breaking at 12. He also had to shave at 12. I'm not just talking 1 or 2 hairs I'm talking we couldn't put it off any longer He seriously needed a shave. That June was asked how his exams went he looked so much older.

Idontbelieveit14 · 27/08/2021 13:17

Aww my son is 13 and a half and it’s not going yet bless him, he is quite small still too x his friend however has only just gone 13 last week and has size 11 feet and a deep voice!

SoupDragon · 27/08/2021 13:20

I never noticed DSs' voices breaking 😂 Clearly they have (they're adults) but I never noticed it happening with either of them.

PercyPiginaWig · 27/08/2021 13:28

@SoupDragon maybe they were just born with men's voices!

OP it really doesn't seem early but in some boys the process can take a long time.

@ThanksIGotItInMorrisons my sisters and I got our periods between age 8 and 10, it's not new, just some happen earlier than others. My mum requested a sanitary bin in the girls' toilets at our primary school but I think that was more that no one else had asked.

Some people say puberty begins earlier generally due to increased weight of children compared to a few generations ago, not sure if it's true.

PhilCornwall1 · 27/08/2021 13:29

Ah, he's hit what I called the "Scooby Doo" phase.

Make the most of it, it can be very funny, especially if they get over excited or angry. 🤣

shouldistop · 27/08/2021 13:35

I think these things always take us by surprise with our own. Ds1 is 5 and his tooth fell out last week, I was so surprised!

ApplesAreTheBaneOfMyLife · 27/08/2021 13:52

Ds2’s voice broke at 12, before that of his then 14 yo brother!

A girl starting her period between 8-12 has always been both normal and the healthy ideal for women who aren’t East Asian. It was considered so important that in many places, throughout human history, menstruation was linked to marriage and girls who hadn’t started by 15 / 16 were assumed to have fertility problems and often couldn’t find ‘top tier’ husbands if at all.

In some hunter gather societies women are considered really valuable and as such marriages are delayed until they are old enough to survive childbirth (16-18). This doesn’t mean they start their periods later; all it means is that these societies understand that women a few years past menstruation are more likely to survive to raise their children.

Boys in my DS's year hit puberty from early year 6 to about end year 9! It ranged! they were all developing at such different stages! ...there was a time when they were hanging out and looked like fathers & sons!
They all caught up eventually by about year 10 / 11!
