To ask if you think ben wallace has done a bad job?

Loads of people on social media calling for Ben's (defence secretary) resignation over pen farthing and his operation ark.

I think ben and his department have suddenly been thrust into a highly volatile and constantly changing dangerous situation in which he has to make decisions for the good of the most amount of people possible. I also think that the insistence on evacuating hundreds of animals will undoubtedly have taken resources away from getting people out of Afghanistan and prevented human lives from being saved. I don't think that calling for ben's resignation over some animals not being able to be evacuated is reasonable at all. Or have i missed something?

Most intelligent people have seen through the smear campaign against Pen. The man has spent twenty years in Afghanistan supporting the rights of women, children and animals. Only Dave from Hull sitting on his fat backside would have the nerve to criticise him.

FergusSings · 29/08/2021 19:36

@VeganVeg

Peter Egan has done so much for animal welfare. He’s a vegan and an all round lovely, lovely man.
He is indeed. I am sure the armchair critics will find a reason to criticise him though.

'Only Dave from Hull sitting on his fat backside would have the nerve to criticise him.'

Well that seems a bit sneery about folk who live in Hull and have fat backsides, not very pleasant is it?

I'm not called Dave and don't have a fat backside but I will criticise him as I have til the cows some home. His 20 years service is admirable, his work with strays is brilliant. This isn't about that. It is about using his status and a private jet to attempt to get priority and that was wrong.

The animals should have stayed, his staff should have got on a military flight 24hrs before. People have fled with no belongings why does he get to take 3 truck loads?

I’m sure. Some people will find fault with anyone. The poor man lost his wife recently and is grieving but has still found time and compassion to help with so many animal welfare causes.

Why were comments by @IAmSuperman deleted? What’s happening with Kabul Small Animal sanctuary?

snowballer · 29/08/2021 19:53
  • Raab remained on holiday after Kabul fell;
  • He didn't speak to his counterpart in Afghanistan in the preceding 6 months to the country falling;
  • he didn't speak to anyone in Pakistan either;
  • he asked the PM if he could stay on holiday, even after he'd been directed to come back;
  • the FCDO left 5000 emails unread, relating to urgent requests for help from Afghan's. Emails from MPs, charities, NGO's - unread. Not even read and yet to be dealt with, just not even opened;
  • Johnson and Raab joking about emails they'd received, and looking in child like wonder that people stayed at the airport after the attack;
  • ARAP applications left un-dealt with, leaving many many people behind;
  • FCDO leaving behind for the Taliban documents with biographical detail and biometric data on people that have worked for us, apparently in a shredding error;
  • Afghans housed in unsuitable places - example of which was a hotel with wide opening windows on upper floors, from which a small child recently arrived fell and died.

And so on, and so on.

That people are still making idiotic, simpering comments about the fact PF got shouty on a phone call in the face of all of the above, and the multiple other failings by multiple departments in the government is frankly unbelievable.

VeganVeg · 29/08/2021 20:01

So many failings snowballer. And so many more will come out over the coming months I’m sure.

I didn’t know a child had died after falling from a window. That’s incredibly sad.

SueSaid · 29/08/2021 20:01

Stop minimising. He didn't get 'shouty' he was abusive and threatening. Weve all seen desperate refugees and the chaos at the airport, this man should have left his animals and got his staff out. That should have been his focus not 'Operation Ark'.

He swore and threatened to expose him for his actions. If Wallace hadn’t done what he’d done, Pen wouldn’t be able to do that.
Pen has worked tirelessly for animals. He and his team didn’t want to leave them, they made the choice to try to save them together.

Yes, dreadful. Story here

Saucery · 29/08/2021 20:10

The UK and US govts blocked the Afghan staff from leaving.
People can say it was PF’s fault that his staff couldn’t leave all they like. It still won’t ever be true.

You don't have much to say about anything else I mentioned though do you. I wouldn't say it's me that's minimising 🤷‍♀️

I am very interested in the wealthy businessman who paid for the plane and also hopes to be able to help KSAR. You don’t realise how many people are out there working quietly for the Good until something like this happens. I mean, he could be spending his money on sending himself into space or something, but no, he’s funding humanitarian and animal welfare.

VeganVeg · 29/08/2021 20:15

snowballer

Thank you for that link. I’m crying here. Rest in peace little Mohammed. ❤️

fourminutestosavetheworld · 29/08/2021 20:16

Snowballed,** it is possible to agree that there have been significant failings with the evacuation and think that PF has let himself down by encouraging his supporters to harass the MoD at a time of crisis. They are not mutually exclusive. And I'm a supporter, just managed to maintain a sense of perspective I think.

Twitter is full of people claiming that he is being smeared to distract from our failings in Afghanistan. If it's a smear campaign it's a shit one as the media is still full of our failings, and this storm in a teacup will be gone in days. I mean, how important do people think he is if he can distract us from analysing a 20 year war and subsequent disastrous withdrawal. The focus is on him, legitimately, because people are polarised by whether he has made the right choices.

Yep. Shouting over her and talking crap.

Oh and 'a film will probably be made of this' 🙄

Spencer Haber. I’d never heard of him before either. It certainly restores my faith in humanity to know people like him are willing to help.

VeganVeg · 29/08/2021 20:20

Dom did amazingly. She didn’t even know these animals are vaccinated. You’d think these interviewers would do their research. Embarrassing.

Saucery · 29/08/2021 20:28

It’s actually quite a racist attitude I’ve noticed wrt to rescue animals from abroad. That they are feral, diseased creatures that Defra would euthanise as soon as they land. Why would they be if they have been in a rescue such as Nowzad or KSAR? It’s all part of the Othering process some people prefer to enable them to rationalise not caring about not just the animals, but the staff who care for them.

If people knew anything about Nowzad they would know that all dogs are vaccinated and neutered. Rachel Johnson and Charlie Peters made twats of themselves.
