I've been out tonight with some friends to the nearest major city. We went for some food and a few drinks, very relaxed, just spending time catching up. I've got home and realised that I've spent almost £50! I'm not skint my any means (although not near the Mumsnet 6 figures) but this feels a lot. How do people afford to do this multiple times a week?!

They have more disposable income.

BikeRunSki · 26/08/2021 23:26

We don’t afford it multiple times a week!
2 or 3 times a year maybe!

AnneLovesGilbert · 26/08/2021 23:26

Lots of people don’t. And it’s the drinks that push it up.

Hope you had fun Smile

Kite22 · 26/08/2021 23:27

Well, who does it "multiple times a week" ?

I suspect most people will go out once in a while.
Those who go out more tend to be youngsters with few other commitments.
Then of course, some people earn more than others.

andpeggy1 · 26/08/2021 23:27

I feel £50 is reasonable

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/08/2021 23:30

That's good for food and drinks. Who does it multiple times a week ?

oknowimscared · 26/08/2021 23:31

£50 on a night out doesn’t sound too bad. But that would be once a month (maximum) for me. Not weekly.

kikipie · 26/08/2021 23:32

We easily spend that per person but once a week normally

sbhydrogen · 26/08/2021 23:32

I'd do that weekly (before kids 😭) but not multiple times!

Darthwader · 26/08/2021 23:33

I don't do that a few times a week. Once a month on average.

Lou98 · 26/08/2021 23:34

I'd usually spend more than that on a night out the the closest major city to me. I wouldn't go there multiple times a week though.
If I was having multiple nights out a week (which I did pre baby) it was usually a local pub in our town which is a lot cheaper

Eurghhhhhhh · 26/08/2021 23:35

Yeah I had lots of fun! I know lots of people who do go out multiple times per week and I always wonder how they afford it. I think £50 is decent for food and drinks but even once per week is like £200pm minimum and that's a lot to be drinking away ConfusedBlush

About once a month for me. The only people that I know that do that multiple times per week are young, living at home and have no dependants.

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 26/08/2021 23:37

That's absolutely about right, £50 would get you a gastro pub meal with starter, main and either house bottle of wine or say 2/3 cocktails per person here in Cheshire.

PieMaster · 26/08/2021 23:40

I go out twice a week in average but spend less, choose cheaper food, look for drink deals, public transport. I spend nothing on car, scrimp on heating, no new clothes, make up, hair, crap for the house, gadgets etc. I prefer to waste money on holidays and doing things.

FrownedUpon · 26/08/2021 23:42

£50 is reasonable for a nice meal & drinks. Lots of people have good salaries & a high level of disposable income. That’s how they afford it.

HilaryBriss · 26/08/2021 23:46

I budget £200 per month for that sort of thing, which usually pays for me to go out for something to eat and a few drinks once a week. I definitely couldn't afford more than that!

ThinWomansBrain · 26/08/2021 23:47

I went to open air cinema this evening - had free tickets, but even that (wine in a can, burger) was around £30+ a head

HotPinkTeaSet · 26/08/2021 23:49

I don’t know if it’s true but someone told me that people have different levels of income and some people earn more than others and have lower outgoings.

GetMeOut22 · 26/08/2021 23:55

More disposable income and different priorities. No kids.

blueshoes · 26/08/2021 23:57

When I was out a few times a week I had no children and therefore a lot more disposable income. Probably do it 2 or 3 times a month now. £50 is really cheap for a city centre night out with meal and drinks though. I'm in NW and usually spend at least twice that. I don't think I could even get a meal and few drinks for £50 in my local town.

doingnothing · 27/08/2021 00:04

£50 is very reasonable for a night out, have you teleported in from 1992?

NoNotMeNoSiree · 27/08/2021 00:05

Either more disposable income or debt with credit cards.
