“A well done to myself”

So in a 24 hour period where there’s a humanitarian crisis going on in Afghanistan, at a time when many key workers have risked their health and worked long hours in stressful conditions, only to be thanked with applause, an “influencer” posts a picture of a £37k bracelet she’s just bought as a “well done to myself” for, as far as I can ascertain, being able to look pretty and appear on a reality TV show. And people all over the internet applaud it.

AIBU to be deeply uncomfortable with this juxtaposition?

The bigger issue is not that a 22 year old women spent £37k celebrating a new job.

It’s that her billionaire boss treats the majority of his staff appallingly, paying poverty wages and breaching COVID rules, and proposes to his girlfriend with a £2m ring.

@amiadillo

Tons of qualified creative directors will have applied for that role and she got it despite having done none of the work to get there. I think it's shitty of her to act like it's some kind of achievement when it's fairly obvious that it's a publicity thing.

She can't be doing a CD role in the traditional sense

If she is I wonder how her team will feel about being directed by someone with many years less experience than them. I just don't see how it could work.

It has to be a publicity stunt. But then who is actually doing the job?? Unless they have a global CD and they've created the role of UK CD when they dont really need one so she can play at it without impacting the department.

Ive no idea why I care so much.

That kind of bragging is always tone deaf- it’s not like most of this person's followers will ever be able to afford to buy themselves a treat. I don’t think it’s fair to bring what’s going on in Afghanistan though. As for the NHS staff, they are long overdue a proper pay rise even before covid. It doesn’t matter whether this daft woman spends £37k on herself or not- they still won’t get that pay rise. It’s her money she can do what she likes with it.

@helentomelon I presume it's a role largely based on social media & they just want to target MMs followers.

I guess it must be.

Of course YABU. People can't wake up each morning and be like "Let me just make sure that literally every other human being on planet earth is happy before I post this cheerful news."

I don't love social media bragging either - nobody does - but we can't all constantly focus on every negative thing in the world. We would all lose our minds if we did. Sometimes we just celebrate our own personal victories. And that's okay.

If we waited for the world to be perfect before we celebrated, we would wait forever. And life wouldn't be worth living if we constantly mourned for every bad situation on earht, because there are just so many. Always.

Would you feel the same if she was say a commercial lawyer, movie mightily, singer, investment broker or a tech entrepreneur? Lots of people earn a lot and it's not through worthy hard work. It's through talent and having something to sell that others want. I mean, our society does not reward those who work the hardest. That's human nature and capitalism and there does not seem a better alternative. Seems to me like snobbery for how she made her money. She is obviously business savvy and has used her beauty and talent to her advantage. It's unrelated to Afghanistan. Nurses should earn more, but it's not her fault. Your criticism could be seen as part of the same problem, criticising and not valuing the work and interests of young women.

Well, yes, I would say the same about someone who went from runner-up on Love Island to commercial lawyer at 22 with no experience or law degree because it got the law firm some headlines.
