“A well done to myself”

Whatsgoingonnnn · 26/08/2021 15:17

So in a 24 hour period where there’s a humanitarian crisis going on in Afghanistan, at a time when many key workers have risked their health and worked long hours in stressful conditions, only to be thanked with applause, an “influencer” posts a picture of a £37k bracelet she’s just bought as a “well done to myself” for, as far as I can ascertain, being able to look pretty and appear on a reality TV show. And people all over the internet applaud it.

AIBU to be deeply uncomfortable with this juxtaposition?

Leave MM alone, she is actually a decent role model compared to a lot of influencers. She seems to work hard and have her head screwed on properly. Can't believe she's only 22 😱

ACPC · 26/08/2021 16:44

Such a crass way to behave, cringing for her but what's happening in the world is a separate issue I think.

AllTheSingleLadiess · 26/08/2021 16:45

She has just earned a job with a 7 figure salary. Congratulations to her.

AllTheSingleLadiess · 26/08/2021 16:49

I think you're unfair to pick on MM of all people. Cartier bracelets aren't important in the grand scheme of things but Afghanistan will not be front page news in a couple of months (sad but true) and the pandemic will end one day. The MM stuff is easy to avoid unlike boring crap like the Sussex-Windsor feud

I don't hear her slagging off others like some reality TV types. Seems to be a sweet and ambitious girl
Bryonyshcmyony · 26/08/2021 16:55

I am 54 and a miserable git when it comes to reality TV, but my dds like Mm and I have to grudgingly say she always seems very sweet and grounded stunningly pretty too

amiadillo · 26/08/2021 17:04

I mean it's crass to brag about it buts that how she makes her money. If people stopped following & buying her products then she wouldn't be successful.

NickiC85 · 26/08/2021 17:05

Yes, YABU - do you feel uncomfortable when people spend £10 on a bottle of wine because there are people without clean water around the world? Is that crass and inappropriate too? These types of comparison only work if you're equally as willing to make them between the "globally rich and poor" as you are for the super-rich and the comfortable.

If you are uncomfortable with the wealth disparity in the world, then see it everywhere and challenge it everywhere. Don't just single out 1 influencer and equate her bracelet to the situation in Afghanistan.

HereForThis · 26/08/2021 17:06

It's not the influencer's fault, is it? Did she stop others from receiving their reward? Do you know how many things are going on in the world that you're unaware of? Do you realise the many devastating news in other places that you've not heard of as much you've heard what's going on in Afghanistan? Terrible things happen everywhere and at the same time, good things are happening everywhere. The world really doesn't stop for either - it's the sick "joke" of the universe.

I'd leave someone to celebrate what they wish - if it affects you so much, then it's best to look elsewhere. Feeling sad won't change what's happening.

amiadillo · 26/08/2021 17:06

Although I take the point that PLT isn't particularly an ethical company.

evianlion · 26/08/2021 17:06

There's no connection between earnings and hard work. You sound bitter and resentful.

If you have a problem with the inequalities in our society and the wider world, how does attacking one individual woman change anything for the better?

The many, many hard working people in our society - many of whom aren't part of the NHS but are still hard-working and critical to all of us - are not going to suddenly get pay rises if you can bully one woman into not buying herself jewellery.

Never mind the fact that the value of a human life is not determined by one's economic output or ability to work hard. Disabled people don't deserve to exist in poverty because they're not lucky enough to be able to "work hard".

There's so much wrong with your attitude.

TractorAndHeadphones · 26/08/2021 17:10

Are you uncomfortable with her posting or the fact that people actually pay attention?
Either way YABVVU.
Both things are unrelated.
It’s perfectly possible for people to have liked her post, and then scrolled down and donated to a charity ad.
The world is and will always be unfair. Every second, every minute every hour people are dying all over the world. People not posting about themselves won’t fix it.

Sparklesocks · 26/08/2021 17:12

Why follow influencers or engage with their content if they make you so upset?

No problem with her buying the jewellery. More posting about it to millions with the message “I get to have this because I earned it”. Because the connotation is “you don’t, because you haven’t done enough”.

The war in Yemen started in 2014. I take it you’ve not bought anything unnecessary since at least then OP?

I agree with PP, many people seems to take issue with working class people getting above themselves. I’m almost certain there are members of the uppers classes with much more expensive stuff than her that they’ve simply inherited or even just been given by people like themselves, sheiks or oligarchs.

I went away for the weekend and told a couple of friends on WhatsApp. Should I be ashamed?

Flashing jewellery on the net is crass and stupid as she’ll become a target for thieves like Kim Kardashian but Love island contestants are easy to avoid. In addition what she’s doing has no connection to nurses and Afghanistan. I’d literally never heard or seen the woman in the OP until I opened this thread and looked her up.

She didn't just appear on the show, she was a genuine runner up!

The problem I have with saying she's earned it is that it implies that anybody that doesn't conform to that ideal i.e. is overweight, not classically attractive etc is worth less.

I would say born into it more than earned it, but, privilege of one form or another has always been the British way.

Whatsgoingonnnn · 26/08/2021 17:39

@FixTheBone yes, I think that’s what I’ve been trying to get at. Thanks.

And regarding working class getting above their station, believe me I’d be feeling the same if it were Jacob Rees-Mogg.

I think this says more about your insecurities than an influencer showing off. I just looked and thought someone I don’t know has bought a bracelet I don’t want. I didn’t immediately think I’m worth less because I’m old and wrinkly and don’t have a bracelet Grin

1forAll74 · 26/08/2021 17:48

Just shows you how many stupid people look at social media crap..

FrownedUpon · 26/08/2021 17:48

It sums up what’s wrong with our society today. It’s really depressing.

Well, actresses and artists models in the 18th century were also celebrities so I don't think much has changed
DuckDuckGooses · 26/08/2021 18:06

I think it's great that at 22 she's just been made the creative director for UK and Europe at PLT - she didn't post the cost of the bracelet, everyone googled it! 100% she deserved it, she's managed herself and turned herself into a brand - it's comparing apples and oranges. She's made money from advertising, sales etc she hasn't taken money from the NHS to buy this - so why the comparison?

Bluntness100 · 26/08/2021 18:09

So with all this misery in the world are you sitting following influencers and posting jealous threads about their jewellery? Or you in there doing your bit snd someone told you about this?

Shitty juxtaposition don’t you think? To be a voyeur.

AnAutumnAfternoon · 26/08/2021 18:12

I agree OP but what is more annoying to me are the people who watch programs like Love Island and 'follow' the likes of Molly Mae. These love Island and other reality TV 'influencers' make absolutely no contribution to society and are essentially a famous waste of space that youngsters look up to. They'll probably be nowhere in life if not for 'social media'. Pathetic. I am sure most people on mn won't agree with me though.
