Outdoor education/ youth work

MrsTulipTattsyrup · 26/08/2021 14:01

AONB or national park warden - they work outside, work with the public, manage conservation projects.

Lots of the jobs people have mentioned could require specific training or qualifications so it might be worth telling us what you already have and whether you’re in a position, family and financial, to take on further training or education.

StuckMama38 · 26/08/2021 15:36

@MrsTulipTattsyrup I could take on some training. I'm not working currently and my only DS is starting school. I have two degrees but neither are particularly relevant 😬 I don't want to take on an additional degree at significant cost but could spend a couple of grand on training.

Personal trainer.

minipie · 26/08/2021 15:51

If you want it to fit within or mostly within school hours that will narrow it down - eg working at any kind of kids activity or local attraction is likely to want weekends or after school hours.

Garden design is definitely a good idea - there are quite a few “levels” of it, you don’t have to do the full on designer training, you could focus more on planting for example.

Grounds or parks maintenance/management

Ecology and environment/conservation

Tree surgeon

Most jobs in construction would also tick your boxes although the “outdoor” would be building sites rather than lovely greenery…

MaverickDanger · 26/08/2021 15:52

Environmental engineer/technician.

NotMeNoNo · 26/08/2021 15:58

Can you imagine yourself on a construction site? This might be a road/bridge/flood defence type site rather than a building. You'd get all those factors. There are lots of surveying, supervision, safety type roles, it's not all bricklaying and heavy lifting.
Also preconstruction surveys such as ecology (literally night work doing bat surveys etc) water quality etc but they tend to be just small teams or individuals.

Daftasabroom · 26/08/2021 17:23

There are loads virtual training courses online, a lot are free to take part but you a few tens or hundreds for a certificate. It might be worth looking into.

StuckMama38 · 26/08/2021 20:54

I'm not sure about a construction job... one of my first jobs was in the construction industry and i think I'd be concerned about the male dominated and often misogynistic culture but I guess it depends on what exactly you do...
Never thought about bat surveying! I'm a morning person really but will look into this.
Doesn't have to be school Hours at all. Happy to work weekends but not both days every weekend.
Will also look at garden design or gardening. I do enjoy gardening. I'm fairly petite though and not sure about any kind of heavy lifting.
I don't want to do anything too solitary. Really need to work with/have contact with other people.

@Dixiechickonhols personal trainer or group exercise instructor are top of my list of things I'd like to do.

I'm wanting to explore things I may not have thought of based on my values and interests. Thanks for all the help so far!

@gardeninggirl68 what do you do? Is it gardening related?

gardeninggirl68 · 26/08/2021 21:03

our bootcamp leader ran a franchise. she branched out and took us on 3 peaks challenge, she also had a running club where we entered races together...ranging from the race for life 5k to london marathon. we also did park run on saturdays together

then she had a cycling club and they worked towards the london to brighton...and some of us did wild water swimming and triathlons. she was great and grew her business well

she does mini camps for kids as well...she's never still!!

gardeninggirl68 · 26/08/2021 21:04

was previously a garden centre manager.loved it!

OakPine · 26/08/2021 21:04

Walking/hiking/climbing tour guide
City historical tour guide
(depending on where you live)

StuckMama38 · 26/08/2021 21:07

@gardeninggirl68 the bootcamp leader sounds exactly like the thing that would be up my street. I've thought about it for a long time but.... I don't know why I've ruled it out before. I'm reconsidering now :)

I'm a physiotherapist which may suit you? Took me 4 years to do a part time degree but they do advanced courses now which are 2 years. I think the masters is also 2 years. You could also do it as an apprenticeship so be paid as an assistant and go to uni 2 days.

lastqueenofscotland · 26/08/2021 21:17

What about some of the “professional” roles in construction. If you were contractor side you’d likely be on site. Lots of people to work with and lots of news projects.

Client side is fun too (office based) with lots of site meetings and nice lunches with architects Grin
