Posting here for traffic 🙈

I recently completed a short careers workshop and I'm looking for job/career ideas based on the following:

-Outdoors
-Physical challenges or exercise related

  • Involves working with people, social, collaborative
  • frequent new projects

Hit me with your ideas 💡

@lastqueenofscotland what kind of professional roles? Can you give an example?

Since you don't know what you don't know, im trying to discover if there's anything out there I haven't thought of because I don't even know it exists.

Once you get out of trade roles, construction is pretty ok for inclusion, i work in the field and at least a third of he people I'm in daily contact with are also women.

@NotMeNoNo do you think so? My husband works in design for a subcontractor on big commercial projects and some of the stuff his colleagues come out with is pretty ick. Luckily my husband isn't like that at all!

I actually have a masters in commercial real estate which is RICs accredited and I haven't ruled out getting into surveying of some kind. Maybe valuation. I'm just kind of put off from previous experiences and was looking at completely different things.

@Scatterbrainbox can you tell me anything about outdoor Ed? Do you have any experience in it?

I’m a quantity surveyor, you can work for client side, contractor side or sub contractor (I’d not recommend subby side it sounds really grim albeit very well paid).
Not outrageously hard to get a very junior role, the APC is a real undertaking but commands respect and a decent wage after.

Countryside ranger; includes outdoors conservation work, meeting the public and
some educational workshops.

Kneesaregood · 26/08/2021 22:13

This might be region specific, but there are some jobs in outdoor education for young people excluded from school or who are in the care system and need different support. In the peak district the children's homes often want to take on people who will work in the children's homes and as part of that will be willing to take children out hiking, horseriding etc. So in those jobs you don't need to be qualified in those things, but they're keen for people who will be active and keep up with the kids. And then there are jobs in the alternative provision where you'd need the relevant qualifications but would involve teaching kids things like kayaking and rock climbing. Arnfield care is an example of an 'active' children's care organization, and gritstone education is an example of the latter.
They tend to be in rural areas where they'll move children who need to be away from cities/crime.

The jobs require good people skills. Children's residential jobs usually offer nvqs as part of the job.

Firefighter
Postie
Grounds keeper

Valuation work is something I would be interested in too (I already work in the property industry). You'd have a mix of surveys and office / home work plus nice lunches!

As a junior you rotate round the areas so MSK, neuro, respiratory, Intermediate care so each area is completely different. It sounds like you'd suit MSK though, assessing injuries and rehabilitation.

Hope it's okay to post on here as I see its a few weeks old. @lastqueenofscotland can you be realistic with me about how much contract negotiation is done in QS, and what level of maths I'd need to be comfortable with? Also interested in whether you find there is any room for part time work (albeit around 30 hours still, not a 2 day week!)
