Help - DC not feeling well and long journey

UndertheCedartree · 26/08/2021 10:30

We have spent the last few days in a city a 4 hour journey from our home town. Today we are travelling home.

Both DC (14 & 9) feel sick and are still in bed. We've got 4 hours until our train. Is there any medication I could give them or anything else I can do to help them feel better before our journey?

Sickness bugs can be airborne in that if you vomit those particles spread in the air and others get it.

I expect you have stopped listening to this thread anyway OP and you're going to take them on a train and potentially spread covid or a bug around.

If the OP cannot secure alternative accommodation, what exactly would you suggest? Assuming she even can change her train tickets to tomorrow or Friday, where would they stay?

She can't drive home. I doubt a taxi is a viable option given its a 4 hour train trip.

What exactly would you do? It's shit, but it's the only option it seems.

OP does not say it is a 4 hour journey. She says the journey starts in 4 hour's time (at time of posting).

HorseGallopingOnATomato · 26/08/2021 12:12

@LizzieMacQueen OP says both.

I think you need to read the OP more carefully!

Read the first line of the OP.

Get on the train but make sure you're sat near the toilets if you can. The loos on trains are always a mess anyway.

If the train isn't busy I would try and sit somewhere as far away as possible from everyone else (even if you have booked seats). Can the children wear masks, not sure this will pleasant if they feel nauseous but needs must, and possibly double mask, so more protection. Can you get LFTs before you travel?

ittakes2 · 26/08/2021 12:20

Nelsons Clikpak Arsen Alb., 30c 0 usually helps with that sort of thing very quickly. Its a homeopathic remedy but can be bought at chemists including boots. My son at 4 had a bad stomach and he was too young for traditional meds and this was recommended and works a treat.

Sugar pills or bottles of water do not help with nausea.
LizzieMacQueen · 26/08/2021 12:39

Oh my apologies. Absolutely right she does say she lives 4 hours away.

Off to specsavers for me!

bellabasset · 26/08/2021 12:52

I'd advise taking toilet rolls, nappy bags, wet wipes and hand sanitiser with you, all helpful in case of sickness, bottled water, keep hand towel handy. Boiled sweets might help. Also spare masks.

Good luck, I hope you get home

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 26/08/2021 12:55

I certainly wouldn’t take them on the train, it’s really unfair on all the other passengers to travel when you don’t know it’s not novo or covid.

I’d look at booking somewhere else until they are well enough to travel and you have tested for covid or ask their dad to fetch them.

UndertheCedartree · 26/08/2021 13:06

@StarryNight468 - thanks for the judgement! Actually I was looking after my DC and packing up our room singlehandedly!

Thank goodness they are feeling better! Not been sick and happily eating a croissant each now. Considering this I think the train will be ok. Also done LFT and negative - thankfully. If I could get a budget hotel anywhere near I would but there is literally nothing. And no one to pick us up. But I think it is unlikely they will deteriorate now.

We have table seats so will not be directly with anyone. I will make sure we wash hands and table religiously. I have got some travel sickness pills and ginger biscuits. Going to see if I can get the charcoal tablets if I can.

Thanks all for the advice Flowers

I'm glad they're feeling better OP. Sometimes these things pass very quickly.

I remember coming down with something when we were halfway down the rocky mountains in Colorado. We stopped at a motel and everyone except my mum started feeling very very sick quite suddenly. It only lasted about 6-8 hours though! I remember she went out for some food and came back with a huge bucket of chicken which I promptly demolished, having been feeling like I was at death's door and with my head in the toilet only 3 hours before. We were all fine after that. It was really strange.

Stripyhoglets · 26/08/2021 13:14

Get Loads of plastic bags just in case. And if anyone does start throwing up decamp to outside the toilets.
Good luck!

Toddlerteaplease · 26/08/2021 13:16

You can buy buccastem over the counter. It's an antiemetic for migraines but works well. Or Migraleve pink has an anti sickness added.

YorkieDogs · 26/08/2021 13:27

DD has something similar at the start of the holidays. Was being sick for about 3 hours then perked up and was back to eating normally by teatime. Oddest tummy bug ever.

Porcupineintherough · 26/08/2021 13:32

If they were puking (or the other end) I'd suggest budget hotel for a night or two but it sounds like you'll be ok to travel. Good luck.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 26/08/2021 13:36

Love all the people saying "don't travel" like OP can magic up and pay top whack for short notice accomodation in school holidays..... right.

lululu16 · 26/08/2021 14:13

If it was covid though would she still travel then ?? Surely not. Not nice to spread any of these things

Given they have gone away in school holidays so prime travel time it’s not out of the realms of reason to presume they can afford it. If funds were that tight then there wouldn’t have been an initial holiday surely?
SnarkyBag · 26/08/2021 14:18

Get some pretzels I keep a stash for when I have migraines as they keep the nausea at bay (thinks it’s the salt. Also whilst waiting the train try and get them an ice lolly. I also find ice cold things easier to stomach to keep fluids up when I feel sick.
Avoid any screen time to whilst travelling just encourage them to sit with their eyes closed.

lululu16 · 26/08/2021 14:20

Surely any trip in these covid times people would factor in and budget for the possibility of having to stay somewhere longer due to isolating?
