To think having your hair done is now extortionate- rant

So after covid lockdowns I went back to my hairdressers, didn’t know my hair dresser had been promoted and so for a full head of highlights, cut and blow dry was over £200- I’m in a London zone 3 suburb not central London!
This is extortionate so I used a local girl who works from home £85- she’s now unavailable, so this morning I’ve been calling round other salons etc- it’s an absolute rip off everywhere I call!

Last one I rang:
Highlights £70 for one colour- +£15 for an additional colour
Toner £35-£40 depending on length of hair
Cut and blow dry £40-£50 depending on length of hair

Seriously?! The length of the hair subjectivity pisses me off because I cannot plan how much it will cost me (I assume people will call anything past the ears “long hair”).
A cut and blow dry costing nearly £50?!!!
And these aren’t high end branded salons, they’re run down salons on high streets, main roads etc.
I’m not struggling but have to think before dropping over £100 on my hair- surely this isn’t right or is cutting ones hair now a luxury ?!

It's about expecting to get expensive treatment on your hair for next to nothing I don’t think £100 is next to nothing
Like I said I think people should be able to get a hair cut for less than £50

Anything involving colour will always be expensive.

I love my box dyes.

I'm in NW Zone 2 London and pay £15 for a dry cut. Pre covid she cahrged £10. This is in a local high street little shop. You need to shop around more.

gogohm · 25/08/2021 12:11

Take a train trip north, I paid £65 last time (Midlands) I visit my dd when I want a hair cut, costs so much more here (sw)

Guacamole001 · 25/08/2021 12:12

£31.50 where I live. Wash cut blowdry. Cheaper places exist but they are really bad cuts.

AuntieMarys · 25/08/2021 12:14

I pay £125 every 6 weeks for colour/ cut....Northern city.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 25/08/2021 12:14

It's a luxury. Millions of us manage without and we don't look scruffy.

It takes training, time, equipment, skill and let's not forget the overheads.

You CAN get a haircut for less than £50. Even in my relatively expensive neck of the wood.

You just need to shop around, and don't expect luxury top-ups like full head highlights for nothing.

Franklin12 · 25/08/2021 12:17

This always desends into my hair costs nothing - I do it myself and dye myself, or I havent cut it in 2 years or people quote pricing that doesnt even sound right...

A dry cut on a women's hair must be really messy. Some people would go in with unwashed hair (lovely for the hairdresser!) and expect a cut.

Having said that - yes. It is a luxury, just like going out for dinner, having your nails done, getting a facial or even going on holiday somewhere nice.

I have used Central London top hairdressers. I loved the experience. Saw a couple of Spice Girls when I went. I now live too far away so I go more locally where the rates are much cheaper and it costs me pennies to get there.

Claricestarling1 · 25/08/2021 12:17

@Beautiful3 can you please share the name of your box dye? It sounds like my holy grail!! 😍

Macncheeseballs · 25/08/2021 12:17

Women's hairdressing is one of the most overpriced things ever

ILookAtTheFloor · 25/08/2021 12:18

I use a mobile hairdresser, it's £50 for half a head of highlights and cut and blow dry.

Home counties.

AlfieandAnnieRose · 25/08/2021 12:18

Yes I agree, I use esalon now to home colour my hair and one of those blow drying hairbrushes!

DuckDuckGooses · 25/08/2021 12:19

Mine is £130 now for highlights, cut and blow dry! It makes me sad that the cut has to be included - they literally take off half an inch in a straight line as I don't have any layers, takes them two minutes but adds £40 ish to the cost! Grin

GallowwayGirl88 · 25/08/2021 12:19

If you’re saying everywhere is a “rip off” maybe you need to adjust you’re expectations. Everywhere being roughly the same price bracket would suggest to me that that’s the average price Hmm

I live in rural-ish area of Scotland and for a full head of highlights, colour/ tint, and a cut I’d expect to pay £120+ I’d expect Glasgow to me more and London to be a hell of a lot more than that.

You can. Stay aware from high names, look for an independent shop or somewhere that has cheaper cuts if you get done by a student under supervision. Or check out mobile hairdressers. There are cheaper options, you just have to hunt.
roarfeckingroarr · 25/08/2021 12:21

Mine costs £145 for highlights and a trim every two months. Crazy expensive but worth it.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 25/08/2021 12:21

Honestly I've switched to box dye and a standalone hairdresser who comes to the house. I get as many compliments as I did before and it's easy and convenient.

NotMyCat · 25/08/2021 12:22

I pay £55 for a cut which is with a curl specialist and cut dry, then styled and diffused

DappledThings · 25/08/2021 12:22

A dry cut on a women's hair must be really messy.
Why would it be messy? I always get a dry cut now. It's so much better being able to see exactly what the length is rather than guessing if it's enough off taking account for the drying. And no faffing about with blow drying where whatever I ask for they add as much volume as possible despite the fact I've just paid to have it thinned so clearly volume is the opposite of what I want.

MargosKaftan · 25/08/2021 12:23

Mens hair cuts are around £20 here. But now dh wfh, he'll book an appointment, jump in the car, go to appointment and be back with new haircut in under 30 mins.

Have you asked about the prices for a cut without your hair being washed and dried? Just the thing you need? Colour, bouncy blow dry, someone else washing your hair for you - all the luxury bits you don't need and expensive.

But home hairdresser is the way to go. If you want to pay travelodge prices, you don't book the Ritz.

TartanJumper · 25/08/2021 12:23

And its all relative, isn't it?
I don't colour my hair, and have had the same boring style since I was 12. I only want a simple cut, so I pay £20 max.
If I wanted a restyle, cut and colour obviously I would happily pay more.

And like you said in your OP Cut and blow dry £40-£50 depending on length of hair
CoffeeWithCheese · 25/08/2021 12:26

I'm one of those people MN hate who go once a month - my hair grows stupidly fast and I have it cut very short. Bleach, colour on top - either a single colour or a combination of different brights (last one was three colours - dark blue, aqua green and silver) and cut and blow dry - £60. My hairdresser is fucking fantastic and the first I have found who can work WITH my ridiculously fine but fucktonnes of it hair that looks terrible really easily.

My one big spend on myself.
