To think having your hair done is now extortionate- rant

So after covid lockdowns I went back to my hairdressers, didn’t know my hair dresser had been promoted and so for a full head of highlights, cut and blow dry was over £200- I’m in a London zone 3 suburb not central London!
This is extortionate so I used a local girl who works from home £85- she’s now unavailable, so this morning I’ve been calling round other salons etc- it’s an absolute rip off everywhere I call!

Last one I rang:
Highlights £70 for one colour- +£15 for an additional colour
Toner £35-£40 depending on length of hair
Cut and blow dry £40-£50 depending on length of hair

Seriously?! The length of the hair subjectivity pisses me off because I cannot plan how much it will cost me (I assume people will call anything past the ears “long hair”).
A cut and blow dry costing nearly £50?!!!
And these aren’t high end branded salons, they’re run down salons on high streets, main roads etc.
I’m not struggling but have to think before dropping over £100 on my hair- surely this isn’t right or is cutting ones hair now a luxury ?!

Of course having your hair done is a luxury Hmm
what else would you call it.

Just ask on your local FB groups for recommendations, many independent doing your hair in your home are cheaper.

I don't mind spending what it cost, it IS a luxury but it's worth it.

Would you want to be promoted but not get a pay rise? Why do you think hairdressers deserve any less?

ImprobablePuffin · 25/08/2021 11:24

I got my hair done on Oxford street for £30 so you can do it cheaply if you keep a look out

Toastytoads · 25/08/2021 11:24

This was mine, full highlights, toner and cut. Cost £75 in the east Midlands.

Just a hair cut shouldn't be a luxury. It's an essential really. But a cut and blow dry is at least £50 now. And I don't think having my hair dried should be a luxury, I don't want to walk out of a salon with dripping wet hair.

nimbuscloud · 25/08/2021 11:25

My salon is maintaining social distancing and mask wearing. Am happy with that and will pay a premium for it.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 25/08/2021 11:27

Your problem is you're paying London prices, we moved from London 25 years ago and mum says that her hairdressers still charges less now than our London one did back then.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 25/08/2021 11:28

As an example mums hairdresser does a wash, cut and blow dry for less than £30.

TartanJumper · 25/08/2021 11:28

My local college has hairdressing student nights, where you can get a cut for about a fiver and a colour for around £15.
Obviously the students are supervised. Worth looking into.

LittleMG · 25/08/2021 11:28

Use a box dye or pay sorry I think yabu. Salons have to pay for equipment, rent, insurance etc and it’s hard work long hours.

You can get very cheap cuts and treatments in London especially if you keep an eye out for offers and codes etc. You just have to keep an eye on deals.
Paq · 25/08/2021 11:31

No one needs colour / highlights. It's a luxury service and hairdressers are cashing in on demand/supply. It's called capitalism.

Kittyswhiskers · 25/08/2021 11:31

My hairdressers bumped the price up to ‘cover the cost of their ppe’ during the pandemic by about £8. Now they have scrapped ppe and social distancing but the prices haven’t gone back down. A cut and colour costs about £130.

girlmom21 · 25/08/2021 11:34

Stop getting highlights if you can't afford it.

LaurieFairyCake · 25/08/2021 11:34

Yes it's a luxury

But once you get loads of grey if you don't get your colour done you usually look older

I don't really want to look older than my age 50's Grin

SpicyJalfrezi · 25/08/2021 11:38

Of course it’s a luxury, but that doesn’t mean some sort of sensible limit on cost shouldn’t be in place.

Coke is a luxury - we can drink water - but I bet there would be a few Hmm faces if you ordered a Coke in a cafe and it cost £10!

I don’t think general up keep on ones hair should be a luxury no- obviously if I was running low on money it’s the first thing to go but I don’t think a cut so I don’t look like a complete scruff should cost me £50 The promotion argument is difficult because if a waitress got promoted their tables bill wouldn’t be more expensive, if I get promoted my managers pay me more not their customers directly.

Yes just agree, prices have shot up. Its crazy money now! Since lockdown I've tried various blonde hair dyes, to cover my greys and look closer to my salon colour. After a year, I've finally found an expensive box dye that achieves this. My hair looks just as good as when my hairdresser does it. I'm chuffed to bits. If I were you, I'd look at trying expensive hair dyes and look for ones that mix 2/3 colours in one. Or try one online. You consult with them (and send a pic of your hair), they mix a colour and post it out to you. Its exactly what you'd get in the salon. Makes it look so much more natural. I'm saving so much money too!

It’s bleach on a foil!

YANBU. I’m also a London borough and struggling to get a wash, cut and blow dry for under £75.

SuddenlySusan · 25/08/2021 11:42

@ExtraOnions where in the North west are you? I’m in Manchester and my recent hair cut and blow dry cost £56 (and she did a shit job), my colour with cut and blow dry ranges from £150-£175!

I’m looking for someone cheaper and good!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 25/08/2021 11:42

I think a reasonable price would be c£25-£30 cut and blow dry and highlights totalling no more than £100

I’m in south east and got full head colour, cut, wash and blow dry for £80, was there for 4 hours cause I have lots of hair 😁

Think it just depends where you go but they did a fab job 😁

Stillafatknacker · 25/08/2021 11:44

I pay £42.50 for a colour, cut and blowdry at a salon, North West.

I did this at a really nice chain. It was awful! It took literally the entire morning to get a cut, colour and blow dry. It was incredibly painful where the student had only practiced on a dummy and I left with a massive headache. The cut was wonky and the “supervisor” did a 30 second tidy of it once it was dry. Next time I washed and dried it I found loads of longer pieces hanging down. Would. Not. Recommend.
Paq · 25/08/2021 11:47

If it's just bleach on a foil then you don't need to go to a hairdressers do you?🤷🏻‍♀️

No one needs a colour and highlights to not look like "a scruff". Are you saying every woman without highlights is scruffy? You have a distorted view of female grooming. Not surprising given the world we currently live in.
