To think, if my lips are blue, then it's too bloody cold?

Sorry for this rant but hopefully there will be other posters who feel the same. Where I am it is winter and I am freezing Sad. I have four layers of clothes on and am trying to work in these conditions but finding it hard. I've just been to the bathroom and seen that my lips are blue. Just for background, I am in great health and have no circulatory problems.

If I hear the words, "rug up" or "just put another jumper on" one more time I swear to God...

AIBU?

Don't be ridiculous. I'm pretty sure no one is going to know who you are because you mention which bloody Country you are in!

WeRTheOnesWeHaveBeenWaitingFor · 25/08/2021 11:42

Why won’t you say where you are? It’s not exactly outing. It really annoys me when people give such scant information for no reason.

Cuddlyrottweiler · 25/08/2021 11:44

7 degrees inside is far too cold but fine outside. No one should have to wear 4 layers indoors, that's ridiculous!

Why? Are you in the Witness Protection Scheme?

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 25/08/2021 11:55

Why does it matter where she is? She's said what the temperature is. She's said she's very cold. The only reason anyone feels they need to know where she is is so they can Google the local temperature and tell her she's wrong about how cold it is. 🤷‍♀️

KhalliWhalli · 25/08/2021 12:03

@IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves exactly Grin.

Yep, it must be one of these places, but as the time difference needs to fit in with when the OP was written, I also guess Canberra.

In a 7 degree room (assuming celsius rather than fahrenheit!) I'd be perfectly comfortable providing I was wearing socks and jumper, as would one of my daughters. My husband and other daughter would be wearing as many layers as possible and the daughter would almost certainly have blue lips.

In a domestic environment - especially one you need to work in so you're still more than you're moving, there needs to be a reasonable compromise for family members who feel the cold this badly. I hate having the heating on, but if someone else needs it on then it goes on and I end up wearing just a Tshirt and light bottoms

I don't pretend to understand how people with shared genetics can react so differently to the cold but it does happen. Definitely invest in low cost ways of staying warm. A hot water bottle can make a massive difference and really doesn't cost anywhere near as much as heating if cost is the issue also keep drinking hot drinks. It all helps.

If cost isn't an issue stand up for yourself. It's cruel to make someone suffer in the cold for no reason other than stubbornness.

AlternativePerspective · 25/08/2021 12:10

If you’re wearing 4 layers and it’s not below freezing and your lips are blue then that is not normal.

E.g. I am on blood thinners and I feel the cold far more acutely than most other people, predominantly because my blood is thinner, and then I add the fact I am in heart failure into the mix and I take to my bed if the temperature drops too low.

While 7 degrees is cold, if you’re that acutely affected by it then I would go and seek some medical opinion.

VyrnwyGirl · 25/08/2021 12:22

@KhalliWhalli Seeing as you can't be bothered to tell us where you live as it's clearly 'outing,' I am gonna guess you live in ALERT, in Nunavut, where it's currently 1 degree C.

Or the Antarctic.

ShrikeAttack · 25/08/2021 12:34

Are you in Patagonia?

Macncheeseballs · 25/08/2021 12:37

Stick a hot water bottle up your jumper

FlyingScott · 25/08/2021 12:41

I’ve got it! Are you the poster who was going to go and live in a shack in the woods? I can see why it might only be 7 degrees there..

Heronwatcher · 25/08/2021 12:52

I think I’d be fine at that temp with suitable clothes. But if you’re cold and an adult do something to warm yourself up. In the short term thermals, hot drink, hat etc. In the long term go to a coffee shop/ your own home and turn the heating on. Not rocket science.

FleasInMyKnees · 25/08/2021 12:56

Put the heating on and give them money for the bill. Wear a scarf or a balaclava.

Beautiful3 · 25/08/2021 12:58

My cousin always feels the cold. She wears thin thermals underneath her clothes, a vest, socks and leggings. Think the socks are called heat holders. Could you try that to help. Obviously put the heating on if you're that cold too.

WillaWeatherspoon · 25/08/2021 13:03

As per a PP, in the UK the minimum legal office temperature is 16°C, or for work that involves physical exertion it's 13°C. Even then employers should ensure appropriate PPE and clothing for the comfort of their employees.
Can you go somewhere else to work - a coffee shop or the library?

BittaOrange · 25/08/2021 13:06

@FortunesFave

I'd be heading off to the doctor OP. It's not normal at all...I'd be worried I had a heart issue quite honestly.
This, seriously
Notimeforaname · 25/08/2021 13:11

I'm saying Stanley.

Notimeforaname · 25/08/2021 13:12

It's about 3 degrees there now. I hope I win!!

Ilikecakes · 25/08/2021 13:16

I vote NZ. I’ve never lived anywhere that got as cold but where the residents were so proud of not having central heating as standard. Only posh new builds got it fitted when I lived there. The locals liked the opportunity to demonstrate their —tight— tough credentials.

Ilikecakes · 25/08/2021 13:16

Strikethrough fail 🤦🏻‍♀️

StoppinBy · 25/08/2021 13:19

It sounds like visiting my husband's parents. I always layer the clothes on the kids and myself because they never run the heating.

Yes, it's cold but not lips turning blue cold (that's why I asked about the celcius/farenheit). If your lips are blue and you're rugged up then I would be following up on that too.

I used to work outdoors, sometimes in winter it could be zero still in the mornings and I never went blue (did get chills in my fingers though which was nasty).

Tippexy · 25/08/2021 13:22

I think OP has mentioned before she is in NSW?

FrangipaniBlue · 25/08/2021 13:24

There is no legal minimum OR maximum working temperature in the UK. The law simply states "reasonable".

These numbers quoted are from the HSE Code of Practice which is only guidance.
