Those who turned 50 last year - have you had an invite for your mammogram apt yet?

Just curious.

I know it’s not an AIBU question but this is a busy area so worth asking here.

I only ask as I know a couple of people who turned 50 this year (not in the same area) who have and it would be interesting to know if A, you’ve been invited since turning 50 and B, the area you live in (if possible).

I had to have surgery 10 years ago for an ‘issue’ that turned out to be benign but the result of surgery meant I had to have reconstructive surgery, so I feel a desire to have this check up.

I didn't know this was even a thing and I turned 51 last week. So no, no mammogram invite.

Ginisatonic · 24/08/2021 18:58

I didn’t get mine until I was 52 as it is a mobile van here (Dorset) which parks in the surgery car park every three years.
Those who have had the poo sample envelope. Are you in England?

tothesea · 24/08/2021 18:59

I had my first one last week and I’m a few days off 53. In Scotland.

tothesea · 24/08/2021 19:00

Mammogram that is. Poo sample turned up as soon as I hit 50 …a very sobering moment!

Cismyfatarse · 24/08/2021 19:01

I turned 53 this year and I am still waiting.

DrFoxtrot · 24/08/2021 19:03

Our area (NW England) has a three year rotation based on your locality. So, for example, in 2019 everyone in town A will be called, town B might be 2020 and so on. So, depending on when your area was last invited, it will be three years from then. Women will be aged between 50-52/53 at their first invite.

TroysMammy · 24/08/2021 19:04

My sister was 50 in January 2020 and had hers a week and a half ago.

I was 50 in January 2018 and had mine in the March, obviously pre pandemic. We live in Swansea.

northernlightsea · 24/08/2021 19:05

It’s (certainly round here) done on a 3 yearly cycle for the mobile van to each area, so if you’ve only just missed one when you turn 50 then you will be almost 53 when your first turn comes round. However you can book an appt at the central base sooner here (don’t know if that’s the same everywhere) I’d sigh t Googling breast screening for your area and you should get the number to call and check rather than phoning your GP.

Snowcloud92 · 24/08/2021 19:06

I thought invites are done by gp surgery. So depending on where they are in their cycle when you turn 50 will depend on if you have your screen at 50 or closer to 53. Im sure if you contact your local screening service and ask they will be able to give you a rough idea.

northernlightsea · 24/08/2021 19:06

Should say I’d suggest not I’d sigh sorry!

SlightlyJaded · 24/08/2021 19:07

Yes. SW London. It came around four. months after I turned fifty.

Amberfromcamber · 24/08/2021 19:09

I turned 50 last Spring, recently had the invitation and mammogram, just waiting on the results now.

JollyHostess · 24/08/2021 19:09

54 so I've had 2 now!

No poo screening though...although I've had two colonoscopies so maybe I don't need it.

saveforthat · 24/08/2021 19:10

I was told that they invite all the over 50 patients in a doctor's surgery every 3 years so you could get an invite anytime between 50 and 53 depending on when the last round fell.

@BarefootHippieChick @DollyLostHerBrolly

On my actual birthday too! Confused

FVFrog · 24/08/2021 19:15

Hampshire. They were running at least 12 months behind due to Covid delays. Got my invite at 51

BarefootHippieChick · 24/08/2021 19:16

flaminggoat best present ever eh? 😂

Kateygirl2 · 24/08/2021 19:20

I'm in Australia; and we were able to get ours here from when we were 40 with a letter from our Dr. So this is what I did; I just turned 50 last week; So I've been having a check up for every 2 years; Not sure if it's every 12 months now or not ? Fingers crossed nothing has come up here as yet. Definitely call your medical / health provider and go and get yourself checked ASAP. It doesn't hurt; but it does; they squish your boobs as flat as possible to get a good pic. So just hold your breath and do it; then it will be over quickly. Best wishes ! :) x

VetInAVat · 24/08/2021 19:20

I was invited at 48, had two so far. Disappointed by lack of poo screening though 😳 (Berkshire)

thisisnotmyllama · 24/08/2021 19:24

I’m 53 and I’ve never had any such letter! I didn’t even know this was a thing! Where are you OP?

TisTheSeasonToBe · 24/08/2021 19:30

@DollyLostHerBrolly
Its a 3 year cycle from 49 and x months to 52 and x months. It is managed by area and will depend on when your area last 'cycled' through.

Also breast screening has nothing to do with GP practices, its a national screening programme so they can't organise/help etc.
It might be worth a phone call to the national screening centre and they might be able to advice when your area will be redone?

userlotsanumbers · 24/08/2021 19:30

Yes, as others have said it is usually a three yearly rotation of GP surgeries. No-one can influence it, not even the GP, the programme rolls on regardless - you'll get called when they ask your GP for a list of all the eligible women registered with that practice, and they do that once every three years.
So, if your GP practice got called up just before you turned 50, then you'll get called three years later. If your GP practice got called when you were 47, then you'll get called three years later when you're 50.
Sheer random luck.

Chunkymenrock · 24/08/2021 19:32

I was 50 in December and have heard nothing. (Powys)

SpamIAm · 24/08/2021 19:32

As a few people have said, it's done by GP surgery and each GP surgery is done every three years, so you'll be invited for your first one between 50 and 53. So nothing to worry about! There are also delays from Covid, although I'm not sure how long these are in England, so it could be a little later again.

It's different from cervical or bowel screening, where you're invited as soon as you reach the required age, because in most places breast screening requires one of the mobile vans to be in your area.

FairNotFair · 24/08/2021 19:33

I turned 50 in April and I received my letter about 2 weeks later. I'm in London.
