Shes showing off right?

Itonlymakesyoustronger · 23/08/2021 12:15

Am I right to think my friend is showing off?

Just a passing comment she is making about how the amount of jewellery and her clothes and bag currently on her now is worth over £10K. How every day she walks around with £10K worth of stuff on her?

But it made me think how maybe I don't actually have very valuable stuff that I wear everyday - yes valuable as in they mean a lot to me but not expensive stuff

OP posts:

Definitely showing off. My BIL does this about cars, clothes, watches and jewellery - it's so boring and exhausting to listen to. Also baffling as half the names he drops are meaningless to me. I think it comes from a place of insecurity.

motherofcatsandbears · 23/08/2021 15:50

Just tell her you saw the same thing in H&M, Peacocks, George at Asda, Primark the other day (evil cackle)

thanksforyourcommentrandomman · 23/08/2021 15:50

@Mybalconyiscracking

The rings I wear every day were £3,000 new. Doubt they’d fetch that second hand though.
You'd be right, my engagement cost the ex £3k, he said if I was going to keep it I'd have to pay him £3k. I got it valued by a few different places and it ranged between £250 and £600
RonObvious · 23/08/2021 15:52

Maybe she's about to try and drag you into some kind of MLM. Be on your guard!

lioncitygirl · 23/08/2021 15:52

Ahhhh - the smell of new money , always the need to tell people how much they have. Bizarre.

Whycangirlsbesonasty · 23/08/2021 15:53

It’s so shallow. My daughter keeps asking why when we have lots of money in the bank don’t I buy an expensive handbag. Cause I’m not that shallow!

Tal45 · 23/08/2021 16:07

She is equating her worth to how much expensive stuff she has and thinks others will to. Does she have low self esteem or is she just shallow?

Sceptre86 · 23/08/2021 16:15

Who is 'she'? Why let it get to you, just ignore!

Jerseygirl12 · 23/08/2021 16:18

I think showing off, my bags cost around 2 to 3k and I have various items of jewellery that cost between 1 and 2k and I’ve never mentioned the prices to anyone ever.

Meraas · 23/08/2021 16:22

Yep it’s showing off and it’s extremely tacky.

The truly rich be sent refer to their wealth.

Meraas · 23/08/2021 16:22

*never refer to their wealth

thisplaceisapigsty · 23/08/2021 16:27

You have to feel sorry for her showing herself up like that.

DeadButDelicious · 23/08/2021 16:31

The only time I talk about how much something costs is when it was very cheap. I love a bargain. That's only if it comes up or someone asks about it though, I don't just march up to people and declare the price of things I'm wearing. Grin

I do have a friend who likes to let you know just how much her things cost and just how much money she is making or what achievements she's made. She has worked extremely hard for what she's got and good for her! Why shouldn't she spend her money on nice things but it can be a little grating after a while. Mostly I just smile and nod and move the conversation along.

Have you ever been to a palace or a stately home?

That’s another MN myth. If you buy your diamonds from a high street jeweller then you’re going to overpay for average quality and won’t recoup anything like what you paid.

However if you choose carefully and buy good quality, especially vintage then you’ll achieve a pretty good return.

thepeopleversuswork · 23/08/2021 16:57

People with money usually don’t look like to draw attention to it

This. There's usually an inverse correlation between actual wealth and the time you spend shouting about your wealth.

And quite often an inverse correlation between the amount of money people have and the amount they spend on clothes.

Certainly anyone who goes out of their way to tell you how much their clothes cost is pretty tacky.

DrSbaitso · 23/08/2021 17:03

Depends on how you define "shouting". Is a lavishly furnished stately home "shouting"? A second home in the countryside? A vintage car? A charity ball held in the hall of your mansion in Mayfair? Expensive clothing? A massive engagement diamond? Frequent cruises or foreign holidays in luxury hotels?

But that’s the point - the rich let their riches do the talking.

So the rich are talking, but the non rich are shouting?
aerosocks · 23/08/2021 17:09

She clearly knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.

Total show-off and completely lacking in any decorum or class whatever.

Meraas · 23/08/2021 17:09

The rich don’t talk - it’s considered distasteful.

And they love a bargain, that’s how many stay rich.

DrSbaitso · 23/08/2021 17:10

That's a very thorough character assassination of someone about whom you know nothing other than what OP has described as a "passing comment", with no context.

Well I suppose I'm asking why a lavish country home or Mayfair mansion or vintage Bentley isn't considered to be talking.
NotImpossible · 23/08/2021 17:18

This is the kind of think I might think (out loud, probably) suddenly - in a sort of 'wow, what if I get mugged' way. I was carrying my (cheap) phone and newish expensive headphones the other day and thought about it - I was wondering what sort of value people who buy the newest gadgets, jewellery etc carry around all day. So I'd say not necessarily showing off - just maybe realising how much it all added up to. Depends on tone and how she is usually I suppose.

aerosocks · 23/08/2021 17:19

@DrSbaitso So? This is AIBU - the OP asked for opinions and I gave one. What's it to you anyway?
