Live in south east not sure if that has any relevance. Just doing some walking and stopped of at an ice cream van.Got a small ice cream (one scoop) and been charged £3! Am shocked. Not brought an ice cream from a van for years but are these the prices? And if so how do families with kids afford this?.
Maybe I was just ripped of but AIBU to think things like this are ridiculously expensive and how does a family with a couple of kids afford things like this?

Next time check the prices before you buy?

Bunnycat101 · 22/08/2021 17:16

Fairly standard price now.

Username7521 · 22/08/2021 17:16

Honestly 3 quid doesn’t sound too bad. I think it’s the going rate? It’s £5 for two scoops at the ice cream place in Hyde park.

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 22/08/2021 17:16

I'm in WM and the ice cream van that comes to our street only charges £1. Ones in parks can be slightly more but I used to live in S E London and I think £3 was prob about right there.

hashbrownsandwich · 22/08/2021 17:16

First world problem.

JuneOsborne · 22/08/2021 17:16

This is why there are threads about how much the summer holidays cost.

starmoonsun · 22/08/2021 17:19

That's standard price in the South, I'm afraid. You weren't ripped off.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 22/08/2021 17:19

May not be a first world problem but not great for low income families. @hashbrownsandwich perhaps you are one of the netmums billionaires on here.

Shoukd of checked but just handed over a fiver expecting £2 max.And this was a tiny ice cream didn't even get 2 scoops for that. I guess I started this thread as generally baffled how low to average income families afford days out with children now when you factor in the price of these kind of extras.

OP, if a family is that low income they won't be buying ice-cream from vans anyway. Even if it was half the price.
Shoxfordian · 22/08/2021 17:24

Not everyone can afford everything Hmm

Children are generally expensive. Days out are treats and not every week occurrences.

If you can't afford something then you do like everyone else - save up or go without.

AgithaRaisen · 22/08/2021 17:25

Didn't you look at the price before you ordered? I don't see that you can moan about it if you did

Ilovegreentomatoes · 22/08/2021 17:26

I guess just feel sad that is the way it has become. An ice cream out shouldn't be an unaffordable treat for a low income family it just highlights how bad it is.

OP posts:
Ilovegreentomatoes · 22/08/2021 17:27

No price list on display. I can probably see why.

Was it posh local ice cream or mr whippy or the bargain basement tubs with lots of air mixed in+

SchrodingersImmigrant · 22/08/2021 17:27

Bit of a catch 22 innit.
Want the people to have solid wages by charging adequate prices, but don't want to pay for it, really...

Family on low income will do what all of us on low incomes did and buy cheaper ice cream

It's literally always been like that OP.

If you're low income there are lots of things you can't afford.

Ice cream is not an equal opportunity.

I'm more concerned about rising food prices and unaffordable rents / house prices myself but clearly ice cream is the issue du jour.

See now THIS is what the compalint should be about
Mummadeze · 22/08/2021 17:29

Sounds completely normal to me. I went to an ice cream parlour in Covent Garden last weekend as a treat and paid £7 per ice cream (included toppings) for me and my DD. Not trying to show off as that is once a year type treat, not an everyday thing, but in context £3 doesn’t seem too expensive.

Kanaloa · 22/08/2021 17:30

Well if we’re going on a day out we set aside ice cream money but scrimp somewhere else - for example I always make the kids sandwiches and bring drinks instead of getting chips or eating at a cafe. Or we will have only 1 day out rather than go to two places.

If it’s not a day out and my kids want an ice cream they receive the standard reply of ‘there are choc ices in the freezer.’

Ilovegreentomatoes · 22/08/2021 17:30

I guess the bigger picture is low income families should get more help or prices need to be more realistic in relation to what people earn.

OP posts:
lannistunut · 22/08/2021 17:32

Fairly standard price IMO, maybe 40p more than near us.

It is good you posted tbh, to remember how many small things are out of reach for lots of families! Summer holidays are pricey.

Dishwashersaurous · 22/08/2021 17:32

Standard price for an ice cream.

It's a treat, not an essential.

Same as a coffee out etc.

Stuff is expensive

Ilovegreentomatoes · 22/08/2021 17:33

I get angry that in London and south east things are triple the price but wages are not necessarily better.
