To think this is a disaster waiting to happen?

Hi all,

I am a bit being unreasonable as it's none of my business but I just wanted to rant as I can't to anyone else really:-

My 17 year old cousin is having a baby, fine whatever people have children young however they live at home with the girls mum and it's a two bed house, her dad got her a dog for Christmas which doesn't get along with the resident dog so it's confined to the girls bedroom, not allowed out for toilet as it's a four grand dog and they're scared of it being stolen, it wees and poos in the room, my cousin works 12 hours a day and the girl won't take the dog out (to be fair she is heavily pregnant so I get it) but they refuse to rehome it and her dad has bought her a house (to commit benefit fraud but that's a whole other story) but they need to build it up from scratch and won't be ready so when the baby's born he will be confined to the same room with the dog and all the mess. They believe the dog will be fine with the baby as it's well socialised (it's not) and I have tried to explain that dogs don't really see babies as humans at first as they smell and sound different and with it being a pit type dog they have a really strong bite so they'll have to be really careful but at 17 they already know everything of course and aren't listening to what anyone's saying.

I know it's none of my business so I understand I am being a bit unreasonable but I just genuinely think it's a disaster waiting to happen and I feel sad for both the baby and the dog but also when I had my baby the midwife visited the day after and the health visitor not long after that so I'm wondering what they'll say and do about the situation.

So they have a highly powerful, energetic breed with a high prey drive, who isn't walked, isn't socialised. Oh and an illegal breed to boot! They sound like brain dead idiots. I would report on the basis that it's a banned breed in the UK but you can't fix stupid and these people really are.

Unsure33 · 22/08/2021 16:42

This sounds appalling . But I am not quite sure what you can do without an address . Makes me go cold even to think about it .

It sounds more like social services should be involved . How is it going to be hygienic for the baby let alone the danger ?

FawkesThePhoenix · 22/08/2021 16:48

Grrrrrr why have they purchased an illegal breed Angry I feel so annoyed at this! The poor dog doesnt have much of a life and if it ever gets reported, will need to go through tests ect to see if it's dangerous. As it is unsocialised the chances are it wont pass those tests and will need to be put to sleep.

I blame her parents! At 17, if her parents are allowing this and telling her that it's fine then she will also think it's fine.

Hopefully she will develop some sense when she meets her defenceless newborn and will want to protect them at all costs.

Do pit type dogs cost 4 grand?

Unsure33 · 22/08/2021 16:48

Do you know who their GP might be ?

nimbuscloud · 22/08/2021 16:49

Is your cousin still in education? College?

ELOU1111 · 22/08/2021 16:49

When she delivers the baby (possibly at her age she will post on facebook) you can ring the hospital maternity and tell the ward midwife. They will contact the necessary services.

Apparently, although was purchased at Christmas and I know dogs had a premium on them because of lockdown, not sure on the breed exactly but it's a pitty type dog.

@lljkk

Could do if American pit bull type .

Unsure33 · 22/08/2021 16:52

Trouble is even if you could alert someone and get a visit I bet they would lie about where the baby will sleep.

Bubbletiers · 22/08/2021 16:54

Could you report to rspca anonymously? I’m guessing it’s a Frenchie…?
Total abuse both for the dog and future baby

Unsure33 · 22/08/2021 16:54

Even blue Staffordshire puppies go for about 2000 to 3000 each

nimbuscloud · 22/08/2021 16:54

Are his parents aware of his living situation?

Whoopsmahoot · 22/08/2021 16:55

Good god 🙄

PoppyDotx · 22/08/2021 16:55

Sadly it's the rough side of the family (which sounds horrible I know but no other way to describe it) and that's how they all are although my aunt isn't quite this bad but they don't care.

You need to report it. Social services, RSPCA, and I'd be reporting benefit fraud too. You know that though. That poor innocent baby needs protecting, and it sounds like your cousin needs a lot of support. Don't let something terrible happen.

EastWestWhosBest · 22/08/2021 17:00

As soon as the baby is born call social services with the full name of the mother and the name and date of birth of the baby. They should be able to work out the address from that.

chaosrabbitland · 22/08/2021 17:01

your right , its a disaster waiting to happen, the dog at some point is esp when the baby arrives ,could quite likely feel resentful at the fact its so trapped , there is a real possiblity it could turn .
all dogs no matter the breed have to be watched carefully when a baby arrives , iv lost count of how many tragdies iv read in the papers of babies savaged to death having been left unattended with a dog .
shes only 17 and already sounds very blase about it all , which does not give any confidence ,
its a matter for the rspca and id say social services when the baby comes if shes still got the dog living in the one room

however alerting them without the family knowing its you is easier said than done and i fully understand your reluctance to sound an alarm and chancing the repercussions .
the only thing you can hope is shes going to not cope well with a newborn baby and a dog living in her room , get fed up with it and decide to rehome the poor animal

I think this one probably shits gold nuggets. That’s what happens in fairy stories.
myheartskippedabeat · 22/08/2021 17:09

I'd report the animal abuse
To the RSPCA anonymously

As for family members buying housing to get other family members housing benefit this was tightened up a while back and she will have to provide her landlord details and they check on the land registry if this is a family member and expect books/ tax returns etc so good luck with that one

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 22/08/2021 17:14

If that photo is your actual cousins dog then you've just massively outed yourself.

Call social services and give them her name and approx due date. They can very easily cross reference her NHS record.

lljkk · 22/08/2021 17:15

Someone is having a laugh.
$75 for a pittie in Arizona.

I don't really care about outing myself at this point, Mumsnet is very middle class 😂 just kidding but I'm gonna report it in the morning.
