AIBU to be upset at review on AirBnB?

This is my first time ever using AirBnB. There was so little available in area we wanted to go , but a property came up. It was an active Church, with 2 camp beds and 2 air beds for the children (aged 11 and 12). No bathroom but a toilet with sink, no cooking facilities or fridge, but a little table was set up with 4 chairs to eat breakfast at. A simple cereal, tea and coffee breakfast was provided. We slept in the Church. On the last day we cleaned the toilet and sink. We washed cups, bowls and spoons we had used and set it all back up, how it was when we arrived. All rubbish was put in a black sack and all recycling put in recycling box, these though we did not know where the bins were despite looking. We don't remember being told where the bins were or where to put rubbish. We were never there during the day, didn't eat there other than breakfast. We didn't make beds the day we left as they would be stripped and washed any way. I smoke, but respected it was a Church and did not smoke anywhere in the grounds, but went out to where my car was parked, smoked there and placed all butts in an empty packet and put in a public bin where ever we went that day, so did not leave any cigarette butts on the grounds even. So, I was shocked to read Hosts review which said
* and her family weren't the tidiest of guests, but they were a very jolly group.'

I don't know what we did wrong, what exactly is expected of us as I can find nothing in Terms and Conditions that says about expectations of how property should be left and my friend was still in the Church to give key back and collect key deposit, so if something bothered them in could have been mentioned then.

I will write a response to the review just not sure yet what to say.

AIBU to be upset at this as I assume other hosts can read this and put them off accepting us in the future, should we use AirBnB again. It has not sat right with me, yet we had a great time and loved the Church and all it's history.pö

Agree that “jolly” isn’t necessarily a positive word to use. It reminds me of when people describe their children as “sassy”. Hmm

And I’m completely baffled that anyone would make the beds when leaving holiday accommodation. Either strip them or pull the duvet back to air the mattress!

Dancingonmoonlight · 22/08/2021 23:10

You mean they didn't strip & wash the bedding?

I have just remembered one place we stayed in and the day before we left, the owner sent me a text and asked me to wash the bedding as she was coming that day to use the holiday let herself.

We left it hanging outside to dry in the sun.
It was a ridiculous way to spend the last day of our holidays. She also asked that we leave at 11am so she could have access.
Our flight was at 7pm.
The problem with AirBnb is people think they are doing you a favour by letting you stay in their property when in reality it is a business contract.

Nothing unreasonable about that. Checkout is generally around 10-11. And since the pandemic it's been on the early side due to the extra cleaning.

Asking you to wash the sheets was mad though. I'd have put them in the washer for her, but waiting for the wash to finish, and put them to dry? Nope. She should have more than one set of sheets, ffs.

Checkout time was 3pm and it was pre covid!

Well surely it depends what the original check out time was. From that post it clearly came as a surprise.

I'm on your side Op; we paid almost £3000 for 4 nights in an Air BnB, much of the furniture was gold spray painted, horrendously tacky, it didn't even cross my mind go strip the bed! I'm not spending my time doing that especially when the spec was such poor quality!

SpringlikeBunk · 22/08/2021 23:40

It was a Church you say?

I think that's your clue - if it was a Church volunteer/helper who was in charge of writing the review they (sometimes) can be really bitchy and worse than Midsomer Murders!

Often the "core staff" like the vicar are lovely then you get power hungry maniacs with poor social skills who are unemployable elsewhere running/dominating the place.

(I like church architecture so will often visit on holiday or days out and generally it's cool, but as I'm a youngish looking woman of colour some of the comments from the "volunteers" have been pretty 'wtf' Angry)

Don't be put off AirBnB though. I've stayed in some cracking places and why pay extra for a hotel when you can experience some nice hosts at much cheaper prices?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 22/08/2021 23:53

@bananafish everywhere I’ve stayed in France they’ve wanted you to practically spring clean the place, which I’m not up for!

I’m not keen on air bnb for a number of reasons, and also not keen to stay anywhere where I have to do cleaning!

Nb- I don’t got to places where this is required and ignore it!

Dancingonmoonlight · 23/08/2021 00:49

If the text to leave by 11am was expected, I'd hardly have posted about it surely?

I also wondered why you WOULD NOT want guests to strip beds.

The only reason I can think of is because they don't plan on changing the sheets 🤢🤢🤢🤢

Does anyone in the business know a more favourable reason (please!!!)[/quote]
As a host I prefer it if guests leave the bedding on as I would like to see the sheets in case of any marks need treating. When the bed has already been stripped this is harder to do. Just my preference.

A few people have said this now. Is it not considered a bit rude or do you assume that people know you'd prefer it?

I've never had issues with independent Airbnb owners (only in Europe tho) as we mostly use it when in Spain..though I do always leave thank yous and what I've done with the house/tidy up when I leave so the cleaner and owner know what to do and where to start.

I've had issues with agencies using airbnbs and being told what I rented is not a hotel/ extra service even though we were charged extras for everything but those only in ski resorts where they don't care if they annoy the customers because theyre always booked out.
