cultkid · 21/08/2021 18:14

I really need help

I have been having the most horrific night sweats : think wet bed can't use it can't use pillows or duvet all have to be changed

6 plus swaps of pyjamas a night
House is not too hot or too cold

I am not menopausal I have just found out I am pregnant though

I had sweats like this when I stopped taking tramadol and other opiates

But I'm not in withdrawal

I don't have an infection
I am pregnant just found out: about 8 weeks

How can I cope
I am going to lose my shit with the laundry the isolation and the fact I am fucking tired

what do I do

Please help me

I also have breast clinic on Monday but bloods looked ok. So it's something else
Please please help me it's the worst

Have you had your thyroid checked? I used to have the same and it's a common thyroid symptom. I'd also urge you to check it because without worrying you if left undetected can cause miscarriage (it happened to me / thyroid way more serious than doctors let off).

Not serious at all if detected and controlled though which is why I'd urge you to check this if you haven't already.

Good luck Thanks

viques · 21/08/2021 18:22

Poor you, I used to take a bath towel to bed with me when I was having menopause night sweats, they are so uncomfortable. I don’t think you realise this until you have them.

Jubaju · 21/08/2021 18:43

Pregnancy and night sweats is a thing - I’m 3 months post partum and I’m still having them (not to your extent, but still awful).
Its probably hormone related but I’d get it checked anyway 👍

learieonthewildmoor · 21/08/2021 18:45

I have a gel overlay on the bed that helps regulate your body heat and a Dyson fan. Keep the fan running on low all night if you need to.
You can get gel pillows too.
Natural fibres for your nightwear and sheets. Cotton blankets.

Verbena87 · 21/08/2021 18:48

Yes get thyroid checked.

When I had leaky boobs, heavy bleeding and night sweats post partum I slept on cheap puppy training pads for a bit.

ThinWomansBrain · 21/08/2021 18:48

errm - stop wearing pyjamas?
won't solve it, but can't be helping

cooling pet mattress
I can't sleep with a fan in the room, but find my dyson humidifier brilliant for cooling.

phishy · 21/08/2021 18:50

Wear 100% cotton if you’re wearing nightwear. 💐

bristolfunday · 21/08/2021 18:52

I empathise, I'm a man over 60 and maybe twice a month on average I have the most awful night sweats completely soaking the bed, obviously not the same cause as other posts so I've no idea why other than perhaps it's linked to diagnosed ptsd.

Bas27 · 21/08/2021 18:52

I had this in early pregnancy this time and after birth last time. It didn't last long - just a couple of weeks

cultkid · 22/08/2021 07:00

Ill look into the gel

My thyroid was fine last time it was checked about 8 weeks ago

I'm praying it's hormonal but worried

Seeing breast clinic and midwife Monday and will raise this

I will have a breakdown if this continues
Last night was the 14th night in a row

If I sleep naked I'm even more sweaty

It's not a heat thing it's a damp thing

Soon as the sun comes up the sweats go
It doesn't seem to be an issue after sun rise

Also I had a nap the other day and it didn't happen

I'm thinking of sleeping with the light on

I have horrible hyper emesis and wondered if it was low sugar as I really haven't been eating
I took a carton of juice to bed and when the sweats began I tried the juice

It didn't work so not low sugar

Yes going to ask that on monday

I'm about 8 weeks

I am a very small person i weigh less then 45 kg at the moment

Keep trying to tell my self it's a pregnancy with a girl and not that I have leukimia

I went to the doctor saying I am sure I have glandular fever
Got referred to breast clinic
No mention of pregnancy from them

I had night sweats lost birth and they were the weirdest thing. Definitely hormonal.

FreeBritnee · 22/08/2021 07:15

thelegohooverer · 22/08/2021 07:19

I wish I had some advice to offer, but please update the thread if you get a solution. Night sweating runs in my family and doctors have been completely disinterested so far.

cultkid · 22/08/2021 07:21

I will come back and update I promise
Ive tried everything

So far the best thing is leaving a stack of pyjamas on bed side table
New pillows beside me
New towels

But it's shit

I sleep with a flannel in my chest

My hair is all wet

I feel for you.
Mine were related to total hysterectomy, so I can't comment on the cause as I on HRT now, but when I was struggling I found a cooling pillow, which I was keeping in the fridge during the day, helped. This and also keeping iced water in a thermal flask on the bedside so I could drink very cold water when I was waking up in the night. Good luck, it is awful
Oh and I second only natural materials.

banisher · 22/08/2021 07:29

Have you looked at the NHS and Wikipedia pages? Yes it can be linked to 2 types of cancer but also about 30 other known things including anxiety (which is listed near the top of the NHS page).

I'm guessing that you might be quite an anxious person from the way you're writing, especially if you've just found out you're pregnant? It's so much more likely to be hormones and anxiety than something sinister.

What if you tried some incontinence sheets for your bed (designed to absorb moisture)? There are also cooling blankets on Amazon. A small quiet fan all night might help too.

banisher · 22/08/2021 07:30

Also, when you say you're a small person, are you underweight?

RightYesButNo · 22/08/2021 07:39

Pregnancy alone is a very possible reason. We don’t have a specific study on night sweats but over a THIRD of women (35 percent) have hot flashes during pregnancy, and as hot flashes snd night sweats can both be caused by the same type of hormonal fluctuations, you can most definitely assume they’re normal. And people asking about them and trying to find relief from them are all over Google.
www.healthline.com/health/pregnancy/night-sweats-pregnancy

The consensus is:

  • don’t make your room too cool (or your body will sweat in response)
  • 100% cotton pyjamas (thé “very soft” and “normal” ones, especially bottoms, are often poly-cotton mix or just poly or viscose or something)
  • don’t panic as it may be partly due to hormones (estrogen and progesterone especially) and partly due to the fact your body’s blood volume is increased significantly while you’re pregnant (up to 40%)

I’m assuming since you know you’re pregnancy, you’re no longer worried about leukemia? If you are, this may be a health anxiety issue, and I would completely understand if it’s made worse by your lack of sleep. Sorry, OP Flowers I do hope either a small change will help or it’ll lessen as your pregnancy progresses.

cultkid · 22/08/2021 07:54

I 100% have horrific health anxiety

I will own this. I know it's probably irrational but honestly something is nearly always wrong in my body and I was told I was fine when I had sepsis and was pregnant so I just worry about everything

I would say due to the hormones I'm sweating as it goes hand in hand with when the sweats started

I am not under weight but I am on the lowest section of the BMI tolerance for my height and age (but I am also not very fit and have no muscles which would weigh a good bit)

Ive carried two babies before this at that start weight but I know it can sound alarming

I asked for counselling in November last year. Finally got a call last week and have my first session on Thursday for CBT

It's my birthday today and I'm damp and cold going to have a shower to start the day. I feel a bit sad about it.

It's the exhaustion

Thank you everyone for the love it's been really helpful and I feel less isolated having shared it. It seems so trivial to complain about something like this but it's really upsetting me

Vitamin D supplements sort it for me.

cultkid · 22/08/2021 08:01

I had terrible night sweats for a couple of years before finally being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Good luck OP.

cultkid · 22/08/2021 09:34

I'm interestingly under rheumatology as my joints swell and I get covered in hives and mouths full of ulcers in the weeks after I've been sick

In May and June I was sick as a dog and on 4 sets of anti biotics

I wonder if it's a kick back from that

That's what my husband thinks

OP posts:
thelegohooverer · 22/08/2021 10:19

It’s not trivial. I have a relative who never gets more than 3 hours sleep because of severe night sweats, so never gets a full sleep cycle. That’s having a distinct cognitive effect.

And it has affected their marriage and quality of life. It’s not trivial.

I know how hard it is with anxiety to figure out when things are serious/probably etc. That’s why I’m labouring the point. You may have to be persistent to get a doctor to listen.

I’m sorry your birthday has started badly. I hope it turns into a lovely day for you Cake
