Gym or cleaner?

Thisisjammmmhot · 21/08/2021 11:58

Dd starts nursery in September, only part time, but will be the first time I’ve been alone without her in 3 years.
Need to lose 2-3 stone, can’t afford to keep my cleaner and pay for a gym.
I have an exercise bike and weights in the spare room, plus have a dog to take for walks (walking isn’t enough for me to lose weight though) in the last I had to work out a few times a week to be a size 10. If I paid for a gym and got all the gear etc, I’d be more likely to force myself to go, whereas at home after dropping Dd off, I might just slump on the sofa.
I adore having my cleaner, I forsake other things to afford her.
Which one would you pay for?

Pay for the cleaner and do the online classes i do for £3.50 a pop, I burn 300/400 calories per class and there are different times/types to choose from to fit around your schedule.

#NotAnAd I promise, it's the same classes I did pre COVID, she went online last year

megletthesecond · 21/08/2021 16:07

Gym.

Dreamstate · 21/08/2021 19:01

Why don't you just clean your own house then, that way your moving more aswell. I dont understand how you think you'll lose worthy unless you move more.

Buzztothemoon · 21/08/2021 19:09

Cleaner for sure. But I’d find a group to exercise with - running clubs or park runs are great - or just find a few likeminded local people. It’s much harder to sack off a workout if you know someone is waiting!

NewPapaGuinea · 21/08/2021 19:22

Exercise is a whole lot more than weight loss. I’d be inclined to keep the cleaner and use the time saved cleaning to go for walks/cycles in the country (if near). Invest in some gym rings (imo If you only buy one thing this is it) for resistance training and you can combine that with your walks/cycles.

How much is the gym membership?

tootingbeclido · 21/08/2021 19:25

Neither.

KillingMeDeftly · 21/08/2021 19:32

Keep the cleaner and get a subscription to the Les Mills app, which works out at less than a tenner a month if they're doing a promotion. Or Jillian Michaels' app. And use My Fitness Pal to log what you're eating.

Jangle33 · 21/08/2021 19:36

Keep the cleaner! That also benefits the others on the family.

If you only work part time you have plenty of time for other exercise and there are loads of free/low cost options. Far more time efficient as well.

virginfannyornaments · 21/08/2021 19:36

Why not both. My gym is only £18.99 per month.

Jangle33 · 21/08/2021 19:41

Ah don’t think you work - plenty of time for fitting in exercise when your child is at nursery. If you really want to be fit you will do it.

Cuddlemuffin · 21/08/2021 19:47

Cleaner. Every. Single.Time. 😂
Get the 30Day Shred work out and do it at home 3 x per week and you'll notice a big difference. Only 20 mins so really doable after a nursery drop off. When you get up just put your work out gear on straight away and get into the routine of doing it as soon as you get home, then quick shower and cup of tea and ready for the next part of the day 👌
@Merryoldgoat I’m not a healthy weight unfortunately, two stone over what I should be. I need to lose weight.
You need to get fit! The rest will follow.

I'm with those who say keep the cleaner.

@Welshiefluff

The very fact you have a cleaner implies to me you are a bit lazy. With that said you should get rid of the cleaner. Paying for the gym means you are more likely to lose it. I doubt you have the motivation to go for runs outside.
WTF? Is her DH lazy too?
Blueeilidh · 21/08/2021 20:06

If you get rid of the cleaner, doing the housework yourself will count towards your exercise

rubbletrouble · 21/08/2021 20:19

I would pay for the gym, as you say you will exercise more if forced to with a gym membership.
Added exercise is you will then have to do all your own chores at home as well.

Double exercise.

urbanbuddha · 21/08/2021 20:53

Cleaner.
Walk more, at a decent pace (4 mph minimum), and use your weights while you're waiting for the kettle to boil etc.

Threebagsfullxyz · 21/08/2021 22:00

Going to the gym isn't just about fitness, it will also help your mental well-being and get you out and about, meeting new people.

This is interesting. I have been weighing up whether to start going to the gym (primarily for the pool/jacuzzi and maybe a class or two, not really the weights/training side of things). I wondered if it is a sociable place to be as I need to try and get out of the house a bit more but really can't make my mind up if this is a good thing to try.

Threebagsfullxyz · 21/08/2021 22:03

I also need to get fitter and lose weight but primarily focusing on the former.

Can't comment about the cleaner. I have debated employing a cleaner too but haven't done anything about it. What does your cleaner clean?

Hersetta427 · 21/08/2021 22:10

Do you have time to go to the gym 4-5 times a week and do the housework? Be honest with yourself here.

Threebagsfullxyz · 22/08/2021 14:18

Have you come to a conclusion about the gym versus cleaner op?

Interested about what anyone has to say about going along to a gym in terms of how sociable it is.

Notavegan · 22/08/2021 14:21

Cleaner.
Pay as you go when the weather is bad e.g swimming at leisure centre is a few quid.

bellamountain · 22/08/2021 14:24

I'd pay for the gym and join exercise classes you commit to. Clean your own house as it will at least keep you moving. I know lots of house proud people and they don't stop, always out front sweeping up and gardening to. They are very rarely overweight.

rookiemere · 22/08/2021 15:05

@Threebagsfullxyz - I think unless you know the people going then the gym isn't really that sociable.
If you're wanting to make friends through exercise I'd recommend volunteering at parkrun.

Siameasy · 22/08/2021 15:10

Neither. Do the cleaning myself, exercise outdoors and eat less. If you’re busy you will eat less.

imamearcat · 22/08/2021 15:14

Cleaner 100%! If you lose your cleaner will you be motivated to clean!?

I would keep the cleaner and start running and doing weights when your DD is at nursery.
