To think my sister is crackers?

Lighthearted! I love my sister really 😊

She's recently just had a new kitchen installed and painted a different colour. She's bought new appliances to match and it all looks lovely. I went over yesterday for a catch up and it's the first time that I've visited since it's been finished.

I offered to make the tea but she said she would and then proceeded to go into the next room where her old kettle along with the old toaster and microwave were on a table. She made the tea with that. Confused, I asked her why she wasn't using the new kettle, was it broken etc. She said no but that she wasn't going to use any of the new stuff as it's all for show!
She doesn't use the tea towels that are on the oven handle either as their for show to. We have to use the ones under the sink to dry our hands 😆. I remember when I changed all of my appliances in my kitchen last year and it wasn't cheap to do so I couldn't imagine not using any of them, but I suppose if she wants to keep them looking new for a while it makes sense, but the tea towels!! Really?? 🤣

Anyone else find this a bit crackers? 😆

My mother has two kitchens for this very reason.

Bonkers, and wasteful.
@MagnoliaBeige - having a special room was far from unusual when I was growing up
Yes I know, still made me laugh though that there was never an occasion in the 30 odd years I can remember that warranted using it though.

tuesday2am · 21/08/2021 09:52

This is hilarious. Grin

I’m assuming a few weeks down the line though once she’s got a bit more used to her lovely new kitchen she does intend to start using the appliances? As otherwise that’s rather a large waste of money…

Toddlerteaplease · 21/08/2021 09:53

My sister, who was the most untidy person growing up. Thinks I'm weird as I don't 'dress' my bed with loads of cushions etc every day. She's bonkers 😜

Toddlerteaplease · 21/08/2021 09:54

This thread is giving me ideas for when I have a new kitchen next month!

CityCommuter · 21/08/2021 09:56

@Dancingatnight she's a bit mad 😂 but once the novelty wears off she'll start using everything in her new kitchen... she can't seriously keep going into another room to make a cuppa or toast especially if she's rushing in the morning!

Btw tea towels are for drying dishes and cutlery only and not fit drying your hands! She needs a hand towel for those!

househousehousefox · 21/08/2021 09:57

@Toddlerteaplease we never made our beds growing up but now I spent loads (lol 200 quid which I had saved for for ages) on a beautiful metal frame bed, I spend about 15 mins every morning dressing it.
It makes me SOOOO happy when I need to go in my bedroom, or when I get into a beautiful bed and throw all of the cushions onto the ottoman box. I feel fancy like I'm in a TV show.
Tis the only mice thing I have in my house atm. young children make sure of that! Grin

SimonJT · 21/08/2021 10:00

@frazzledasarock You underestimate my laziness.

Mrsjayy · 21/08/2021 10:01

Oh how fancy ottoman box Smile

My Dd has boxes for fleece blankets in her living room and they all match her sofa .she was a messy bugger when she lived here!

OldScrappyAndHungry · 21/08/2021 10:01

I remember being in awe of friends who had rooms “just for show”! Grin Coming from a huge family squashed into a shoebox house it seemed the height of luxury Grin. Now I just think it’s horribly pretentious Shock.

Velcropaws · 21/08/2021 10:07

@MagnoliaBeige

Oh love it, that’s too funny! She’ll probably relax a bit once the novelty wears off. Reminds me of an elderly relative who kept her front room for “special occasionst” except nothing was ever special enough to use it, I don’t think I ever set foot in it, ha ha.
^ This is funny and sad at the same time!

Did she used to live rurally by any chance? I do and around here lots of people (farmers) have the lean to/feed room/old kitchen with the kettle where you can visit in your muddy boots and hairy dog. And an inner, rather grand, dining room in the main house you only visit on high days and holidays for more formal entertaining.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/08/2021 10:23

Not uncommon, IMO. My DM had neighbours who cooked on some contraption in their garden shed, so as not to mess up their new cooker. And this was at least 20 years ago.

Plus, when the fitter came to do some check on my ‘new’ (now ancient) kitchen, he was surprised that I’d been using the oven, since a lot of people ‘want to keep it looking new’.

Presumably that’s one reason people have so many takeaways and ready meals nowadays.

I agree that it’s bonkers, though.

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/08/2021 10:27

@SimonJT

She is bonkers, I say this as someone who does similar. When I had my new bathroom fitted I didn’t use it for about eight weeks (have an en-suite) as I didn’t want to get watermarks on the shower screen.

I also have some trainers that are either just for home, or very very short trips out so I don’t crease the front.

If you install a water softener that uses sat to clean itself it will stop the water marks.

It will cost you about £400, more if you need it installed professionally.

They fit them so the main kitchen tap is hard water because people don’t like the taste of soft water.

twoshedsjackson · 21/08/2021 10:37

I visited a good friend who had sadly lost her DM about six months previously, and stayed for "posh afternoon tea". This was served on one of the loveliest vintage teasets I have ever seen, all matching, nothing missing - I swear it made the tea taste even nicer!
She told me that she had found it, pristine if a bit dusty,, when clearing her late DM's effects. I knew the lady, a lovely and hospitable woman, but on my frequent visits to her house, tea was always served up in grotty old ill-assorted mugs. Her own daughter had no idea that she had no less than three absolutely beautiful teasets, which were never used in case they got spoiled. She was making an absolute point of using all three sets for the reason they were made!

Notimeforaname · 21/08/2021 10:41

That's not even ha ha funny. It's just.. sad or somthing!?

Babyroobs · 21/08/2021 10:46

Absolute madness.

LolaButt · 21/08/2021 10:48

Sounds like the people who have plastic covers on their sofas.

lazylinguist · 21/08/2021 11:05

A bit crackers? Nope. Full-on bonkers, I'm afraid.

FeralMeryl · 21/08/2021 11:08

It's a "stunt pineapple" for the modern age

Nocutenamesleft · 21/08/2021 11:21

@Saz12

MrsJayy - DH and I bought a doer-upper house and for every room we finished we got dressed up (as in, black tie) and drank champagne in (ok, sparkling white anyway).
Hahaha. Oh. I love that idea. That’s just for you though. Not using the kitchen is nuts!
Lanique · 21/08/2021 11:39

My lovely friend did this. She posts a lot on Instagram Wink the novelty has finally worn off and she's behaving more acceptably now Grin

My parents have been in their current house for 18 years. They are yet to use the fancy dining room.
Such a waste of space imo.

LadyJaye · 21/08/2021 12:32
@MagnoliaBeige - having a special room was far from unusual when I was growing up
Absolutely - all of my older relatives had 'good rooms' which were only used on very special occasions (and, as children, we were only allowed to enter subject to LEVEL 5 BEST BEHAVIOUR ONLY Grin).

possumgoddess · 21/08/2021 13:47

I have a small shelf with show mugs on it 😳. But in my defense... They are the same mugs as in the cupboard and they do get used if we run out, but we have a lot of mugs and these are arranged nicely so the colours match our lovely new kitchen.
