Sorry for posting on here but I’m feeling desperate. Started having diarrhoea on Wednesday night. Passing yellow water now ever 30 minutes but dr not interested unless still had next week. I’m so exhausted. Is this normal? I’m drinking dioralyte to try and keep hydrated. Any tips to help please .

Do NOT take Imodium - there's a good reason your body is purging what's in it, so please trust that.

Electrolytes, apple skins (apple pectin is very good).

It could be noro, or it could be campylobacter, which is probably why your GP is saying wait until next week: if you're still symptomatic, it's likely to be the latter (which is awful, but treatable with certain antibiotics, like ciprofloxacin).

If it's just diarrhoea, and not vomiting. I think the p.p. who suggested immodium (the instants) are best is correct. " two to start, and one after each loose stool" That's just what I would do.
I do sypathise and hope you are feeling better soon.

@TabbyStar I agree sounds just like my bout of the campylobacter.

I had salmonella a few years ago - really bad diarrhoea for several days. Went through 2 packets of immodium but made no difference. No point taking dioralyte as any liquid I took in was literally going straight through me.
Rang the GP on day 4 - got triaged by a nurse who said they couldn't do anything for me and just to keep hydrated. By day 5 I was lying on the settee unable to get up. A friend visited on day 7. She's a nurse and she took one look at me and told me I had to see a doctor. My daughter eventually managed to get me into the car and to the GP who rang an ambulance as soon as I entered her consultation room.
I spent 5 days in hospital but felt so much better within 24 hours as they put me on a fast drip to rehydrate me.
I still feel really angry when I remember how I was fobbed off on the phone. I hardly ever go to the GP and I'm annoyed that I wasn't taken seriously when I contacted them. I still have some permanent issues from the episode - my gums receded badly when I was really dehydrated and they've never recovered.
I would just say - keep an eye on it and be insistent if you need to be seen

Sounds like campylobactor. DD4 had it a couple of years ago and it was hideous. She picked it up eating ice from the ground outside Confused

Oh, you poor thing! Relentless diarrhoea & stomach cramps are so debilitating & make you feel so down.

I've had it very badly a few times - epic case of chicken food poisoning once & a horrendous case of c-difficile from the GP giving me too high a dose of penicillin but then probably the worst time was completely unexplained - still no idea what caused it - GP wasn't interested & when I eventually rang 111 in agony, they weren't either - until I'd had it over a week!

They DID recommend drinking plenty of water, eating whatever I fancied (but bland was best) & taking Immodium, Buscopan & Co-Codamol for the cramps/pain.

Hope you feel better soon.

Oh god how horrible for you. I’m afraid I second x30 the no immodium comments.

My hubby was like this a few months ago. He was so bad after a week we called the doctor and she asked for a sample. It turned out to be clostridium or C. difficile. He ended up with antibiotics but it took weeks to clear up. Fortunately I managed to avoid it. Just keep up with plenty of fluids. Hope your better soon.

StillMedusa · 21/08/2021 00:36

Norovirus had me lose half a stone in 3 days!
At one point I had my head down the loo when the other end 'fired' and ended up with my arse over the cat litter tray as could not stop long enough to switch position Blush
Not my finest moment....!!
Hope you feel better soon!

Im not suprise dr john collis gave you a warm feeling it was full of morphine. Opiods is the only thing to stop shits though.

StrangeToSee · 21/08/2021 12:40

How are you OP?

Please don’t be afraid to take Imodium. It’s been 3 days so anything that needed to be flushed out will have been flushed out. You need to break from constant loo trips so you can recover, if it’s a bug your immune system needs to get on top of it and sleep will help.

If you’re worried about bacterial infection it’s worth calling the GP to see if they’ll prescribe antibiotics as a precaution. When I came back from India once I had dysentery and the GP gave me 2 different antibiotics (without stool test) plus loperamide and codeine. I recovered within 24 hours.

Rubyupbeat · 21/08/2021 13:24

Please don't take immodium, your gp is right. Sometimes diarrhoea is the bodies way of flushing out a bug or poisoning. If you stop that process the infection can turn onto organs. Keep hydrated and use diaoralyte.
Get well soon.

Incredibly dangerous advice re: Imodium. No NOT take it if it's campylobacter, and that needs to be ruled out.

"Antimotility agents, such as loperamide, can lead to prolonged illness or intestinal perforation in any invasive diarrhea, and should be avoided."
