Sorry for posting on here but I’m feeling desperate. Started having diarrhoea on Wednesday night. Passing yellow water now ever 30 minutes but dr not interested unless still had next week. I’m so exhausted. Is this normal? I’m drinking dioralyte to try and keep hydrated. Any tips to help please .

There was an interesting conversation when I took the stool sample back. I was basically just pooing water at that point and the receptionist said I had made a mistake and they wanted a stool sample not a urine one!! Nope. It was definitely poo!!

Pmsl!

I was so out of it, that when my then DH came home with the little plastic vial for the sample, I thought I was expected to shit in it. Blush

I went into an epic rant about while I could, theoretically, shit through the eye of a needle I doubted if I had the necessary accuracy to squit into a pot 2cm in diameter.

I felt very foolish when I found the little spatula thing inside.

Have you had any recent illnesses? Unfortunately could be the beginning of colitis.

Thomasina79 · 20/08/2021 19:31

I had it last night and did not hesitate to take Imodium instant, which helped enormously. My other half had it very badly the other day, and my daughter and DIL too. It’s awful but usually short lived. Yours sounds worse though and has not cleared up. Definitely ask GP again if it carries on. Perhaps try to speak to a different GP. 24 hour D&V is rampant at the moment.

angieloumc · 20/08/2021 19:36

A few weeks ago myself and then my DD had this. It was pretty grim, 48 hours of vomiting and 4 days of diarrhoea. Didn't see a GP but spoke to one who said it was norovirus. I don't know if it was but at 52 and having pleurisy badly a few times over the years I really must say it was one of my worst times of being ill.
Like a pp said lots of rehydration drinks and plenty of rest. I would try your GP again, or out of hours, if it doesn't improve soon.

Suzi888 · 20/08/2021 19:39

Do NOT take Imodium. If you have an infection it needs to come out, as does any food poisoning. That advice was from my GP.

Mistymountain · 20/08/2021 19:41

Unless I needed to travel I wouldn't take Imodium, I think these things are best left to take their course. It's easy to under estimate how dehydrated you get though, so definitely keep up with the rehydration drinks

Flaunch · 20/08/2021 19:42

I’ve had the shits for 10 days now and no appetite at all. Other than that and a few waves of nausea feel completely normal. I’ve lost a stone almost. It coincided with a trip to an all you can eat buffet so almost completely sure it’s a bug. I read somewhere that the NHS aren’t interested in seeing anyone with diarrhoea unless it’s been 3 weeks.

user1471453601 · 20/08/2021 19:44

Please, don't take imodium. Some years ago, abroad, I had a bad case of this. Doctor on the island I was on on out me on an intravenous drip and gave me salts to counter act what I was losing. He advised me to eat no dairy.
turns out I had cympolambaster.
I had to take imodium on my way home two weeks later (a one hour ferry journey followed by a 4 and half hour plane journey.)

Because I had food poisoning, made worse because I took the imodium. If it's food poisoning, you need to let it take it's course.

After three weeks (and a very sore bum) I was given antibiotics.

Holothane · 20/08/2021 19:46

Hand hold here for you I feel your pain dreadful bug a couple of m9nths ago,

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/08/2021 19:47

I was admitted to hospital with campylobacter once. They gave me a lot of imodium. Don't take more than the recommended amount or for more than two days.
I have no idea why people think you poo infection out. You don't, your body fights it.

bigbluebus · 20/08/2021 19:48

Many years ago I had this for 3 1/2 weeks. GP said it was gastroenteritis but I suspect it was food poisoning as we had eaten out the night before it started and DH was never affected (we'd eaten different things). I was initially prescribed Immodium (or the cheap generic equivalent) and it made not a jot of difference. I lost 1 1/2 stone in weight and honestly thought I was going to die. GP was so rude to me when I rang a 2nd time as I was no better that I was afraid to ring again. Eventually DH rang on my behalf and asked to speak to a different GP who was more sympathetic and got a different drug prescribed. We were due to move house in the middle of all this and I've never been so grateful that our new house wasn't ready as there was no way I could have driven to the new home 20 miles away, I was that ill.

StrangeToSee · 20/08/2021 19:51

Loperamide or co codamol should give you a break to re-hydrate and rest (suffering a bout every 30 mins you poor thing!) It’s likely viral but even if it’s food poisoning any toxins will have been flushed out days ago, sometimes the body reacts as if it still needs to get rid of something but once it calms down should be fine. Make sure you re hydrate. If it’s serious food poisoning the loperamide etc won’t stop the diarrhoea for long, but it will give you a chance to get some fluids down and a nap.

Absoluteweapon · 20/08/2021 19:54

I couldn't get COVID out of my mind but DH tested negative, so just a stomach bug.

bristolfunday · 20/08/2021 19:56

Yes, go to your GP and get a stool sample sent off, in my case it came back positive for Campylobacter, not nice.

JaceLancs · 20/08/2021 20:17

Yes I had norovirus a few months ago - probably the worst and longest stomach bug I’ve ever had - the worst days I seriously considered death would be preferable
Since then my IBS has been worse than usual and I’m getting jelly like mucous quite frequently

Grapewrath · 20/08/2021 21:00

I had this a couple of years ago. It would come and go so I’d be fine for 3 days or so then horrible cramps and runs ( usually in the middle of the night). It went on for about 4 weeks.
I did end up taking Imodium and it settled down. Hope you’re ok and recover soon

Silversun83 · 20/08/2021 21:26

Another one with hideous diarrhoea and stomach cramps from campylobacter, was going about 20 times a day for a good few days. Was still suffering (albeit not quite so badly) after a week. Got fobbed off by GP first time then second time did a stool sample. Diagnosed and prescribed antibiotics, which I started taking after nearly three weeks. They finally did the trick but I was feeling rough for a good month in total.

Apparently your body can clear it but I've heard of lots of people needing antibiotics and I think it's awful you can be left like that for so long (because even when they suggest a stool sample, it can be nearly another week by the time that done and results back).

I think you should ring back and ask to give in a stool sample.

FightingtheFoo · 20/08/2021 21:29

Yes I had it last summer for a week - one of the worst bugs I've ever had. Never found out what caused it (ie whether noro or food poisoning).

I called a private GP and he told me to go nil by mouth for 24 hours except for tiny sips of water. That helped a bit but took another 3-4 days to get over it completely.

But yeah awful. I'm so sorry you have it.

WaterIsBest · 20/08/2021 21:31

Do not take Imodium

Whatever the reason for the diarrhoea it needs to come out!

‘Thats what the doctor has suggested so best to follow his advice for now, or ring 111 for advice’

DiscustinHunAmFummin · 20/08/2021 21:39

Campylobacter was one of the worst things I've ever experienced. I hope you feel better soon Flowers

EnglishRain · 20/08/2021 21:41

March 2018. It was norovirus. Green mucus and not much else. Truly horrendous. It's been a while, time to crack out the Imodium to give yourself some relief. My GP said after a couple of days of diarrhoea your body will have cleared whatever it was, and is just in overdrive. The Imodium will buy you some time to sleep and rest, and hopefully get some dioralyte into you that stays long enough to help.

Sunnysideup999 · 20/08/2021 21:43

I had similar for 11 days with campylobacter - from chicken.
I’ve not eaten it since.
I lost over a stone and felt absolutely awful.
It was nearly 20 years ago and I still shudder thinking about it now

PhoenixFreesias · 20/08/2021 21:51

Worth asking if you can have Xifaxanta/Targaxan or metronidazole for Traveller’s Diarrhea. It can stop you developing post-I fe tipis IBS after food poisoning.
