Anyone paid four weekly?

Fizzysweets1 · 20/08/2021 07:29

As opposed to monthly, it feels frustrating as though you’re not being paid as much as monthly even though you are, it’s just laid out differently. I used to be paid weekly which was great to have that consistent stream of wages coming in and not have weeks to wait, however it felt like I didn’t budget as well as a result. What’s everyone’s preferred way of being paid?

My dad used to be paid 4-weekly (many years ago). My DP is paid weekly, which I can't fathom in terms of additional processing work.

Set you budget as if the 4-weekly payment is monthly, then once a year you get a bonus.

Fizzysweets1 · 20/08/2021 07:35

That’s a good idea yes, to treat it as 13 payments per year rather than 12. In France where I used to live a lot of companies pay the ‘13th month’ and spread out the salary over the year accordingly.

And you get an extra pay than a monthly employee. So it’s just a different budget really.

I get paid on the last working day of every month and prefer that. When I was four weekly paid it never fell the same time so it was annoying making sure you didn't spend too much because you had to leave money to cover the bills. Now all my bills come out at the beginning of the month just after I get paid and I find it so much easier not to have to worry.

Athrawes · 20/08/2021 07:41

I am paid fortnightly. In NZ. It's great, and very common for all public sector.

Potnoodleforbrains · 20/08/2021 07:44

I used to love it when I got paid 13 times a year, because every year you would get what I called a free month with no bills. Made even better if it fell around Christmas time 😁

Chasingsquirrels · 20/08/2021 07:46

We were also paid fortnightly when I lived in PNG.
Public sector were one fortnight & private sector the other.

not 4 weekly, but here we are paid 14 times a year. you get 2 x payments in July and December. this annoys the hell out of me as we are so short of money generally and would be much easier to have a bit more every month
I much prefer 12 monthly payments

FatAnkles · 20/08/2021 07:49

There are advantages. Once a year you can put a large amount aside for savings (or a treat!). Another is that once a year the mortgage payment doesn't fall between those dates so you can save that too.

It can be a PITA though especially when you have childcare vouchers that pay the provider monthly for example. I've been paid this way for 20 years and sometimes still cannot get a grip on it.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 20/08/2021 07:50

I get paid fortnightly which is very common in Australia. I’d prefer monthly.

UnsureOfNC · 20/08/2021 07:51

I get paid 4 weekly. I love it, each month i have an 'extra' certain amount of pounds because one of my direct debits doesn't go out!
At the start of the year i work out what payments go out in which 4 weekly cycle and then add up the amount i have left overSmile

CeeJay81 · 20/08/2021 08:04

I'm paid 4 weekly but I've had the same job for 15 years now and am used to it. It is a pain for bills etc but I treat it like monthly pay, so once a year I have extra money which I can choose what to do with.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 20/08/2021 08:04

We used to be paid 4 weekly, it was recently changed to monthly.
4 weekly was a complete pain with the pay date moving about and bills going out on the same date each month.
Turns out it used to mess with some staff's universal credits. It would look like they got paid twice in a month and they'd be penalized.
Now monthly much better, and each payment is a bit bigger.

Pottedpalm · 20/08/2021 08:17

One of my pensions is paid every 28 days, the other monthly. I find this confusing after having a monthly salary all my working life.

Bargebill19 · 20/08/2021 08:19

I get paid monthly. Mid month and end of month - I currently have three jobs.
Dh gets paid four weekly - effectively he gets 13 pay days per year. One month goes entirely into the savings pot or towards a major planned for expense. But of a bonus? !

newnortherner111 · 20/08/2021 08:20

I am. I treat the month with two pay packets as a bonus for budgeting purposes, and like @Bargebill19's DH try to use the extra pay packet for saving or something that is a one-off (a few years ago it funded a new sofa).

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 20/08/2021 08:21

I get paid 4 weekly and find it frustrating because my bills come out on a set date but my pages he is different every month. Yes I get 13 pays a year but I don't seem to feel the benefit .

BootsScootsAndToots · 20/08/2021 08:22

@DifficultBloodyWoman

I get paid fortnightly which is very common in Australia. I’d prefer monthly.
I love being paid fortnightly!

For 10 years when we were in the UK dh and I were paid on the 20th and 25th of the month which I hated.

Now I'm paid one week and he's paid the next 🙂

cricketmum84 · 20/08/2021 08:29

Monthly suits me fine. I can see why people might struggle to budget if they move from weekly to 4 weekly though. I've always been paid monthly.

My sister is terrible with money and always spends up a week after payday. I've taught her how to do a monthly budget by taking all outgoings and direct debits off monthly salary. She then gives me everything she has left and I give it back a week at a time for her weekly budget. Sounds like a faff I know but it's the only way she can manage it!

Soubriquet · 20/08/2021 08:32

I do.

Dh gets paid weekly

OrchestraOfWankery · 20/08/2021 08:34

State pension paid 4 weekly.

hauntedvagina · 20/08/2021 08:47

I used to be paid four weekly and loved it. Yes, it's could be a PITA having a continually moving pay date but you learn to manage it. My four weekly pay more than covered my expenses so the month when I got paid twice was a real bonus, felt like free money. I would usually use that pay packet to cover Christmas but had some colleagues who would use the money to pay their bills for the year up front (council tax, utilities, etc...

Aprilx · 20/08/2021 08:51

Other than when I had a paper round, forty years ago, I have always been paid monthly in the UK. When we lived in Australia we were both paid fortnightly, but we’re not paid the same week so we received income every week, which I quite liked.

Couldhavebeenme3 · 20/08/2021 09:00

Tax credits and child benefit are paid 4-weekly.

I have them paid into another account and have a standing order set up to transfer over to my main account on my (salary) payday so that all my bills are covered. After the first 12 months you can increase the standing order as you'll have an extra month's worth to chip away at going forwards. (or save to pay for some extra expenses, xmas/holidays etc)

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/08/2021 09:06

I get paid on the last Friday of the month but I'm on an hourly rate not a salary. So some months I get paid for 4 weeks of work and some months it's for 5 weeks of work.

My ex husband gets paid 4 weekly so he pays child maintenance 4 weekly, so some months I get 2 payments. My child benefit is paid that way too.
