Only Fans to ban porn ...

... after pressure from payment processors (banks)
www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/aug/19/onlyfans-to-ban-adult-material-after-pressure-from-payment-processors

Am I being unreasonable to have mixed feelings about this?

Less porn. Less objectification of women. Less women being drawn into sex work.

Or one "no-contact" option removed from such women (and men). And whether the outcome is right or wrong, I'm a bit uncomfortable about banks controlling what is and isn't available online.

If men didn't pay for sex, the sex industry would disappear.

dreamingbohemian · 21/08/2021 09:45

The credit card companies are not forcing onlyfans to ban porn. Onlyfans made that decision rather than spend money complying with new regulations aimed at preventing underage and nonconsensual videos.

This is MasterCard's policy:

'Platforms would be required to verify the age and identity of those who were posting and who were depicted in online porn, Mastercard said, and would have to have a process to review adult content before it is posted. Adult sites would have to offer a complaint process that can "address" illegal or non-consensual content within seven days, and offer ways for people depicted in adult content to request takedowns of that content.'

Doesn't sound that bad, does it? Onlyfans would rather not do all that though, gee I wonder why.

Works both ways, doesn't it.
noblegiraffe · 21/08/2021 09:48

Sofia, who has the real power in this scenario? The one with money, or the one who needs it?

Chocaholic9 · 21/08/2021 09:48

@noblegiraffe

Hard to feel sad about porn being banned from a platform that was increasingly being marketed online and in newspapers as an easy way for young women to earn a lot of money.

Of course many young women were pushed beyond their comfort limits and into more degrading acts in efforts to earn more money when it became clear that this was a lie.

Yep. Totally agree.
Chocaholic9 · 21/08/2021 09:51

The other thing that was awful about Only Fans was that they had an affiliate program for sex workers to get others involved in sex work.

I remember a couple of years ago being on a Facebook group that was about tips for saving money. A lot of low income and indebted people on there.

Anyway the group saw an influx of young women trying to recruit other young women who were having money problems, into the sex industry.

They were effectively working as online pimps. The group banned these people but so disturbing and disgusting that they were young women who were trying to recruit underprivileged women.

@MurielSpriggs

Pornhub managed the consent and underage problem by taking down anything suspect, but leaving up stuff (the vast majority) which was clearly legal. I wonder why Only Fans can't adopt a similar strategy.
This is not correct. When pornhub complied with the new policies last year, they took down 75% of their content (10 million videos out of 13 million total)

Onlyfans could do the same, they just don't want to.

Yep we've two local celebrities in the younger teenagers eyes firstly only fans then nice clothes, handbags, now they travel the world in a life of glamorous Instagram - reality they're selling sex they've had lots of cosmetic surgery and probably attend Potty party events they're in Dubai now.
They both had shitty poverty fuelled childhoods.

Thanks @dreamingbohemian, and also thanks for correcting my misconception on the proportion of PornHub's content that got taken down.

I'm possibly naive, but what does the sarcasm in your final sentence mean? If you mean that OnlyFans would need to take down a lot of its content, even if this is true it would presumably still have a viable (but smaller) business, like PornHub. Are you implying something else?

Basically I just don't find it surprising that they don't want to spend the money to verify any sexual content is legal/consensual.

They just want their cut of women selling themselves, the minute they have to show any responsibility, they're out.

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 21/08/2021 18:05

There was a thread on here not too long ago where quite a few posters had teenage DC who knew girls at their school who were on OF as a way of making money.

MurielSpriggs · 25/08/2021 18:07

Crisis averted apparently ...
