Only Fans to ban porn ...

... after pressure from payment processors (banks)
www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/aug/19/onlyfans-to-ban-adult-material-after-pressure-from-payment-processors

Am I being unreasonable to have mixed feelings about this?

Less porn. Less objectification of women. Less women being drawn into sex work.

Or one "no-contact" option removed from such women (and men). And whether the outcome is right or wrong, I'm a bit uncomfortable about banks controlling what is and isn't available online.

Sex work damages women and is exploitation. I dont want my daughter growing up in a world where getting naked and selling her body online is seen as a sensible career option.

Whatinthelord · 20/08/2021 16:00

I think a lot of people are doing OF work who would never do direct sex work or other type of work like cam girl work.

I think it’s been advertised as an easy option to young girls.

I personally will be glad if they change to not allow spicy content (though not sure what else people would be paying to see).

PhoenixFreesias · 20/08/2021 16:03

On the one hand, I think this is overall the right decision. Content featuring minors and other extreme acts is just unacceptable. How quickly the sex side of OF exploded during the early stages of the pandemic and how quickly that became seen as a mainstream option was very damaging.

On the other hand, I do think that a lot of people have come to rely on it for income during uncertain times. Basically they now have six weeks notice to find other alternatives. It worries me how much more exploitative some of those options will be, especially with he time of desperation that kind of time pressure brings.

The employment market is in many ways a lot better in a lot of countries than at the start of the pandemic, so there are better choices available in some places now, but not everywhere and not for everyone.

Hemingwaycat · 20/08/2021 16:06

I’ll be honest, I don’t really know what OnlyFans is. From what I gather it’s z list ‘celebs’ making extra cash selling naked photos, am I right? I heard Kerry Katona was on it and boaked a bit, surely barely anyone wants to see that.

There’s endless free porn sites anyway so no idea why anyone pays for it.

Proudboomer · 20/08/2021 16:07

Thinks place is just so full on contradictions.
First thread
So only fans porn should stay as it is a safe way for young women to work in the porn industry.
Second thread
Should I leave my husband for watching porn?

So porn is ok as long as it is not your husband watching it?

abcdeg · 20/08/2021 16:08

It’s the whole principle of prostitution that’s exploitative.

Maybe I just don't get it, but how is selling foot pics that people masturbate over exploitation?

Only fans also isn't prostitution anymore than page 3 models posing is prostitution. People got aroused off that, too.

Most on OF have no physical contact with their subscribers. They don't think they're being exploited [obviously not all, but many women like what they do]

Where is the exploitation occurring for the women who like to put content out and make money off of it? Not saying it should be glamourised to young girls, but why is it blankety exploitative as a platform, to release content on?

abcdeg · 20/08/2021 16:11

Well, it's clear they're not the same people saying these two statements. I'm okay with porn as a concept, but I'm aware that lots of it is unethically produced and distributed

I don't have a problem with my partner being aroused by other people

People who are are strongly against porn in their relationship probably aren't going to be advocating for only fans to remain

Boatonthehorizon · 20/08/2021 16:13

@Hemingwaycat Its made (creating) porn accessable to thousands of young women. And sold the idea as feminist and empowering.
Thousands of ordinary young women getting their private parts out for money. Not celebrities.
Its USP is that every young woman can now produce her own porn. And why not?

QuizzlyBear · 20/08/2021 16:30

@MackenCheese

Er... and why was this announced on the radio news? My ds13 would've immediately googled it 🙄🙄😳
If you have a 13 year old son, trust me he already knows about it.
DingDongThongs · 20/08/2021 16:31

Dumbasses! Change your payment providers!

LopsidedWombat · 20/08/2021 16:45

The porn aspect aside, I think this highlights a larger problem which is lots of people earning a living via online platforms that then suddenly change their policies and/or algorithms, potentially leaving these people financially up shit creek. Also agree with the concerns about banks controlling what is available online.

noblegiraffe · 20/08/2021 17:30

Only fans also isn't prostitution anymore than page 3 models posing is prostitution.

Page 3 was dropped after heavy campaigning about it being sexist and degrading to women so probably not a good example to use if you’re trying to make out OnlyFans is fine.

RampantIvy · 20/08/2021 17:30

Because there have been articles in the national press about her @Shirleyphallus, and unfortunately someone showed some of the x-rated stuff she was showing on Twitter. It is most definitely not hearsay.

Whatinthelord · 20/08/2021 17:36

From what I’ve heard OF isn’t just pictures either, it’s people requesting increasingly more and more degrading images. It’s not comparable to page 3.

Also I’ve heard of people on OF having people they don’t like, ex partners etc subscribe. There’s no anonymity at all. It scares me that an 18 year old can make content like that that will be available online forever.

Page 3 isn't prostitution though.

That is one very specific example of glamour modelling. People can masturbate to anything. Point is only fans content can include bikini pics, feet, topless or full nudity. A lot of it isn't even sexual acts, or if it is, it's solo

This is not prostitution. You may not like it, but let's not make things up. In the same way some women are happy to sell topless photos of themselves in other mediums, others do it online.

Still no explanation as to why selling explicit photos - with no contact with the buyers - with the consent and sometimes satisfaction of the woman in question is 'exploitation' and 'prostitution'

Most people do show their face, but you totally can be anonymous if you want. Might get fewer subscribers and less money from it but it's not mandatory to show your face

You can have zero links to your identity and make money. You can put up non nude pictures and make money.

I don't like how it's marketed to young people fresh out of school, but you can go without showing your face on the videos/pics you put up

Whatinthelord · 20/08/2021 18:11

@abcdeg how do you remain anonymous but also prove you are of age to consent (I don’t know what the process is for people signing up).

noblegiraffe · 20/08/2021 18:15

Anything that puts women’s bodies up for sale in whatever form is not good for women as a whole. Because any area where women’s bodies are for sale, even if ‘totally controlled’ by the woman (which is never true when money is involved) is also an area where women are controlled and sold by and for the profit of men. All of them.

Whatinthelord · 20/08/2021 18:16

“Most people do show their face, but you totally can be anonymous if you want. Might get fewer subscribers and less money from it but it's not mandatory to show your face”

Does this not just mean that people enter OF thinking they’ll stay anonymous and not show their face….only to eventually end up showing their face, crossing boundaries they initially didn’t want to cross…because they need to do that to make the decent money.

Whatinthelord · 20/08/2021 18:18

When I see TIktoks about OF, that are clearly aimed at glorifying it to teen girls, it feels like grooming to me.

Exactly. How can people not see it? I'm staggered by the tacit acceptance of this as an OK way to make money on this thread. Mind boggling.
Crikeyalmighty · 20/08/2021 20:47

And we wonder why some decent looking young women suddenly aren’t interested in careers that require passing exams and studying when it’s being promoted to them to just post sexy videos and pictures , ideally the more on offer the better and acquire fans and make much better money than a job that actually requires that old fashioned concept- work. — this isn’t giving power to women , it’s leaving them even more vulnerable to relying just on their looks to get through life and turning some men young and not so young into bloody weird perverts in my opinion— these men then end up with you ladies who post on here in relationships moaning about your partner sexting or paying for only fans or watching webcams etc. It’s a viscious circle — you can’t say it’s fine, it’s a way for them to make some good money but then not so fine when ‘your’ partners are the ones watching and paying for it

100% agree with this comment.
EmeraldShamrock · 21/08/2021 09:32

Great advertising too. Im guessing there'll be half dressed females pay for view just no genitals or intimate touching.
I imagine their top earners splashed across the paper in tiny clothing will increase the fan base from the news spread highlighting no porn.

SofiaMichelle · 21/08/2021 09:44

If people didn't create content OF would disappear.

Why is it always someone else other than the content creators' fault that this sort of thing exists?
