to support extinction rebellion - more London action tomorrow

I am not sure what, but I have seen their previous demonstrations, and support their cause.

We were given badges at one event, and travelled home on public transport wearing them, and received absolutely nothing but 100% support from other travellers, which was nice, as I expected some hostility, publicly wearing their badges while roads in London were closed by them

I am not going to say who they give a shit about, as I don't know any of them! You speak as though you know what they all think.

Ah so what are they doing this time to stop harming the vulnerable?

Because, please tell me, it will change my mind. If they aren't doing anything, then we do know what they think.

Anyone who supports XR, argues for them, goes to protests supported damaging vulnerable people.

What is the reason you, XR and other supporters feel this is acceptable.

lannistunut · 23/08/2021 21:40

Thanks for re-posting, I have read it now. It isn't about not being arsed, sometimes I go away and a thread moves on!

I won't defend everything they do, as I am not a member.

But I do think disruption is a legitimate tactic.

lannistunut · 23/08/2021 21:42

Anyone who supports XR, argues for them, goes to protests supported damaging vulnerable people. I think you can't say this, it is taking it too far.

People have always protested. People always should be able to protest.

Hekatestorch · 23/08/2021 21:46

@lannistunut but to be fair you didn't go back and look either. So, that's why it looks like you can't be arsed.

You just posted the same question twice.

But I do think disruption is a legitimate tactic.

I don't entirely disagree. I disagree that the disruption hurts the most vulnerable in society and they aren't tackling that.

Its not acceptable and its extremely arrogant of XR and their supporters (which has been said on this thread by other posters) to tell people, it's actually of benefit to these people in the long run.

It shows a complete lack of understanding how some people have to live. The governemtn don't care about these people. They ignore them. XR do the same. Imo, it's morally repugnant.

I absolutely can, and have said it.

Protests can happen. If you repeatedly hurt vulnerable people and you keep supporting people who do. You are supporting harming people.

There, I said it again.

lannistunut · 23/08/2021 21:52

@Hekatestorch

Well yes, I get that you CAN say it Grin

Have a nice evening, I am going to drag myself away from this now. I have enjoyed thinking more about it and I guess we will see how it develops over the next couple of weeks.

sst1234 · 23/08/2021 21:58

Nothing nicer than a day out protesting, eating drinking in central London, leaving a ton of litter around. In the middle of August of course, not in a freezing day in February. I wonder why.

EstuaryBird · 23/08/2021 21:59
@Hekatestorch

IMO you have not answered how they can make things happen more effectively - you have just suggested how they can be less disruptive.
They disrupted public transport which residents of the two most deprived boroughs in London, Tower Hamlets and Newham, rely on to get to work. Many of these will be Zero Hours workers and employers will not care why they were late or absent…they just won’t pay them.

They didn’t disrupt tube trains from Hampstead or Richmond, they targeted their action at those they would hurt the most and the Govt would care least about.

Either they are in complete ignorance of the effect of losing wages for low paid workers or they simply do not care.

sst1234 · 23/08/2021 22:01

Just a ton of virtue signalling by people enjoying themselves. Nothing more, nothing less. So shallow, it’s actually embarrassing.

anon12345678901 · 23/08/2021 22:10

What I don't understand is if they're so concerned about the environment, why doesn't the founder drive an electric car, instead it's diesel? Seems very hypocritical to me, but I'm willing to bet most, if not all, of the XR protesters, are hypocrites like her. It's do as I say, not do as I do. And as for the littering, absolutely no excuse. Take it home with you if there isn't an empty bin around.

was this today?

I thought they were in Central London/Covent Garden area today.

BelleOfTheProvince · 23/08/2021 22:14

Of course they were. Lots of bars in covent garden.

BelleOfTheProvince · 23/08/2021 22:19

A 31 year old from Brighton decided to get her tits out.
How very noble of her.

This is why ER need to keep doing what they do. Absolute stupidity and greed. It really does beggar belief. UK government on the verge of approving a new oil field. Why?

The government don’t give a shit about the people. The floods. The fires. The catastrophic situation we are leaving our kids with. Direct, shocking and disruptive action is the only rationale response in the face of what we understand about our looming extinction and the actions of our current government.

No, Darker. This was last time. I am still extremely angry about it. Ridiculous to carry the grudge maybe but losing £480 when you live month to month is not something you easily forgive.
BelleOfTheProvince · 23/08/2021 22:28

Problem:Extinction looming.
Solution: Get naked in public and play musical chairs.
Is Noel Fielding writing this script? Sounds like an episode of the mighty boosh.

I thought XR had denounced the Canning Town action.

BelleOfTheProvince · 23/08/2021 22:36

Well that's ok then, Estuary didn't suffer because they said after it was prattish.

How about having some bloody foresight.

BelleOfTheProvince · 23/08/2021 22:40

Among the provisional plans is a move away from the fortnight of disruption that is scheduled to take place twice a year. Instead the movement will look at how to build a high-profile platform for experts on subjects such as food security to try to shape global debate on the climate emergency.

So why are they disrupting a public place again.
Said they need to change tactics and didn't. Just the locale.

Audit · 23/08/2021 23:18

However, Foufas then accused the activist of hypocrisy.

He said: 'How can you say it's not personal. You are asking me and politicians to change my life personally, so of course it is personal.

'And if you drive a diesel, if you take a holiday that takes up 11,000 air miles and then you are asking me or asking politicians to enforce rules that make me change my life, of course I am going to say you are a hypocrite.'

Dr Bradbrook's 2019 trip to Costa Rica had a carbon footprint of 2.6 tonnes. This is a quarter of the amount that the average Briton emits in a whole year.

She posted on Facebook that her holiday was 'filled with nature and the warm sea' and sightings of exotic wildlife including iguanas and monkeys that 'smash mangoes on the roofs'.

However, she said today that she in fact flew to the sunny location because the treatment she was seeking for a health issue was 'not legal' in the UK.

Audit · 23/08/2021 23:19

She previously said that she began the group after taking 'psychedelic medicines'.

She said she 'prayed in a deep way' while taking the substances on a retreat.

The action that affected us was at Shadwell. If you have an unregulated organisation and encourage people to disrupt then you’re culpable, can’t just wash your hands of it.

@BelleOfTheProvince

If I had a choice between er and Manchester United fans being let lose on my city I'd choose Manchester United everytime. It's a beggars choice but at least football fans don't act superior whilst trashing your city.
I'd even take Millwall fans over XR.
