to support extinction rebellion - more London action tomorrow

I am not sure what, but I have seen their previous demonstrations, and support their cause.

We were given badges at one event, and travelled home on public transport wearing them, and received absolutely nothing but 100% support from other travellers, which was nice, as I expected some hostility, publicly wearing their badges while roads in London were closed by them

OP posts:

I support them

ItsASpot · 20/08/2021 07:53

Personality wise ER are rigid thinkers who are obsessive, hypocritical, entitled and full of white privilege. The worst part is that the ones I know have zero self awareness.

Just very naughty boys and a few try hard females.

Justcallmebebes · 20/08/2021 07:53

If you had spoken to them they would have transported you

Oh the irony 😂😂😂
Serious question OP, why do they leave so much rubbush behind?

EmpressWitchDoesntBurn · 20/08/2021 07:55

Obviously it’s harder to be litter free when very large numbers of people are there and the police are moving people on.

But surely all each person needs to do is not drop any litter?

I’d include cigarette butts in that by the way - of course XR protestors dispose of their fag ends responsibly too?

Polkabott · 20/08/2021 07:56

I fail to see what actual change they are achieving though really, their 'stunts' don't draw much support, and I'm not sure what realistic ideas they are putting forward? They also disrupt regular people, MPs for example don't have to get the tube, when they're lying on the road up from an NHS hospital it's not going to be MPs that can't get to see their relatives.

Pedalpushers · 20/08/2021 07:57

@DoTheNextRightThing is right. They aren't raising any awareness of climate change, they are just raising awareness of themselves. It's like saying PETA throwing blood on people is a good tactic to make the public go vegan, all it does is make people hate PETA.

SimonJT · 20/08/2021 07:57

@nellly

Are we in need of awareness though? I actually think the vast majority of people are fully aware and therefore struggle to understand XR wilfully causing chaos and costing cities money without much benefit coming out of it.

We need concrete change from
Governments and corporations all
Over the world and I'll be honest, Xtinction Rebellion is not going to achieve that

A large number of people are aware.

For sceptics idiots like XR are more likely to turn people away.

Extinction rebellion choose not to give practical advice that the average people could look at and follow, their essentially the environmental version of PETA.

They could choose to be more practical, highlight greenwashing, yes that persil does have some plant based stain removers, yes that ecover smells quite nice, but they’re not environmentally friendly. They could assist consumers in making better (and realistic choices).

They could further publicise soft plastic recycling, or schemes that make plastic bricks for example.

They could promote the use of plastic filters on washing machines.

Sadly littering, causing criminal damage and verbally abusing members of the public seems to be their main hobby.

Sirzy · 20/08/2021 07:59

I fully agree that massive steps and changes are needed to slow climate change.

However I don’t for a second think that these protests will achieve anything other than pissing people off and causing people to have to take longer journeys than they would have had to otherwise which is obviously great for the environment Hmm

SimonJT · 20/08/2021 07:59

@Darker

That may be your experience Simon and obviously that’s very unpleasant but it isn’t what I’ve observed. I also live and work in London and have dropped into a few events in passing. There is often free food and recycling facilities on site. Obviously it’s harder to be litter free when very large numbers of people are there and the police are moving people on.
If they’re capable or travelling to a demo I’m sure they have the ability to both walk and hold a bottle at the same time. There is zero excuse for these people littering, just as there aren’t any excuses to verbally abusing passers by or smashing windows.
Darker · 20/08/2021 08:00

Xtinction Rebellion is not going to achieve that. Not on its own.

It’s a movement of people and it’s inclusive. Anyone can turn up at a meeting or drop in to an event.

I’d love it if we could use our votes but a lot of people (me included) don’t vote Green because the priority is to keep another party out. But our politicians are not doing enough. XR provides a way to show politicians that the public care about Climate Change.

isitjustlockdown · 20/08/2021 08:01

I thought the action was to start on the 23rd, lasting for two weeks.

Where have you got the information about it starting today?

Sirzy · 20/08/2021 08:02

Being moved on by the police is completely irrelevant, if they have the rubbish they should keep hold of it until they can dispose of it properly.
Darker · 20/08/2021 08:05

Next time I go to an event I’ll take photos of their recycling and rubbish management. OK?

It’s individuals who litter, not the XR movement. Obviously littering is wrong.

Sirzy · 20/08/2021 08:07

But if those individuals care so much about the environment as they claim then leaving rubbish wouldn’t even cross their minds surely?

You can see why having any rubbish left behind would make people very sceptical about the aims of some of the people there!

That's ok then if it's individuals and not the movement...

@Whattheflecker

Reading the responses on here, our kids are totally fucked aren't they 😞
Yup
AlternativePerspective · 20/08/2021 08:08

They’re a bit like fathers for justice. They aren’t known for caring about the environment, they’re known for being twats who clearly don’t have what it takes to get a real job so spend their time moving from protest to protest just because they can.

And let’s be honest, most of them don’t just go out protesting for ER, they protest at whichever event is taking place this week.

And wasn’t it Emma Thompson who flew in on a private jet to address them? Very environmental there. Not.

I’m assuming none of them drive cars, or go on holidays to foreign countries, or have centrally heated houses? Nope. Didn’t think so.

SmileyClare · 20/08/2021 08:09

We travelled on public transport wearing badges and received nothing but 100% support from other travellers*

What did the "support" look like? Most London commuters barely make eye contact, I can't imagine all the other passengers cheering their support, admiring your badges and so on. Confused

Eskarina1 · 20/08/2021 08:09

I support them in principle. We need to raise awareness with the government that climate change is an issue that drives voters, that inadequate action isn't a political option. But I don't know if it's effective as shown by the reaction here.

I don't know what the answer is but at least they're trying to do something, because in 10 years time when my dc are facing a much more limited future and ask me what I did, saying "well, we didn't fly abroad on holiday and most of our clothes were second hand" isn't going to cut it.

There are recycling facilities available on most high streets. Mine has had separate bins for different items for decades. Why didn't they use them? What does the police moving people on have to do with it? If they genuinely cared about the planet they'd have kept their rubbish with them or used the plentiful recycling facilities they provided. Better yet, they wouldn't consume things with single use plastics in the first place. You really are clutching at straws to suggest that they should be pardoned for their littering because they chose to buy single use plastics and then dumped them on the ground when the police had to move them on. That is an embarrassingly pathetic argument.
PineapplePanda · 20/08/2021 08:10

@Marikali @Whattheflecker Just because people don't agree with the actions of the yobs that are Extinction rebellion doesn't mean they aren't concerned with Sustainability!

Get off your high horses.

You have no idea what sustainable lifestyle some posters on here have compared to the rebellions. I for one don't like printing and wasting paper - the rebellions have littered my neighbourhood with posters! Yet they are holier than thou?!

DismantledKing · 20/08/2021 08:11

I support serious action on climate change, but XR are a bunch of cosplaying wankers. They’re so counterproductive.

Bluebells1 · 20/08/2021 08:11

Nothing but a bunch of twats with just one agenda: inconvenience the public. Can't stand them and won't ever support them.
