Employers think they own us

Name change.

I had a holiday request granted for October approved when I asked for it back in June.
They have now declined my request, stating it's due to staffing issues.

Because it had been accepted I went and booked a holiday to go and visit family, who have also booked the time off so we can all spend time together.

I work 5 days but lately they either add on an extra shift, or extra hours onto my actual shift. So if I'm supposed to be on a 7-3 they'll change it to 7-5. They don't ask, they just expect you to do it. So you cannot make any plans at all.

The rules are already in place where you cannot have holidays in June, July, August and December. So that's why I decided on October.

Aibu to think that a lot of employers think they own us? I know I'm being ridiculous but I'm so angry!

I cannot quit because I have children and the family rely on my wage. I am looking for other work but all the jobs in my area are 20 hours per week or under. One was a 4 hour contract!

So today was fun. Management are now speaking to me like I'm a piece of crap. Others have put notice in too and they're also being treated badly.
I feel like not going back but it's the other team members who are struggling that's making me complete my leave

You've got nothing to lose now, so you might as well get a little bit of satisfaction out of the situation. Pull them up on their bad behaviour, raise a grievance if you can be bothered, cause some bother for them and those that allow them to treat the staff so poorly.

Agreed with pp. you’ve got a position secured. So you have nothing to lose by pulling them up on their rudeness. I would be saying “and this is exactly why you lose staff so frequently.”

Can't I change my notice so I leave a week earlier? I don't know if I can take much more of the nastiness

Good for you OP. How long left?

You can actually refuse to go back at all.

A notice is little more than a gesture of goodwill on your part to give them chance to find a replacement. What are they going to do - fire you?

If they have already provided a reference fuck them off OP.

Bargebill19 · 28/08/2021 17:18

Do you have holiday owning? Offer to I se that in lieu of notice. Especially as you are obviously causing management grief considering how rude they are being (said dripping in sarcasm with a head tilt, and then walk away with your head held high!)

Or raise a grievance of bullying and go on gardening leave? Is that a thing?

Get signed off with stress!

@changingsheets

Staff retention is an issue with my employer. Staff burn out very fast, they leave then we have to take on more staff.

We have a high amount of sickness due to stress and depression too.

I'm not bloody surprised!

Your employers need to remember it's a job not a vocation.
