To let my hair get greasy?

How unprofessional is it to go to work with greasy (tied-back) hair?

If I don't wash mine every day it looks greasy on the second day. But if I do wash it every day, it just gets dull and dry at the ends.

Washing every two days seems to be OK as it looks nice at least every other day. But I think I must look scruffy in my smartish workplace.

When you see someone with unwashed hair, do you judge them?

Dry shampoo seems to create the same drying-out problem, and I don't like the white marks.

Have you tried putting dry shampoo on in the evening, rubbing it in and sleeping on it? Gets rid of the white marks and I have found it to be the best way to eek out dirty hair

DrWhoNowww · 19/08/2021 13:57

I put dry shampoo in fresh washed hair.

You use less and it feels cleaner for longer - I find it’s better at extending the clean feeling than it is at making hair feel clean when it’s already dirty.

If I dry shampoo once it’s already dirty it ends up a dry frizzy mess with suspiciously white roots.Grin

I can get 3 days out of my hair like this - 2 days down and 1 day up.

DrWhoNowww · 19/08/2021 13:59

But to answer your actual question - I wouldn’t judge someone with second day hair.

Obviously greasy dirty hair would make me question hygiene standards but not necessarily judge them professionally I don’t think.

Yerroblemom1923 · 19/08/2021 14:00

Your hair needs to look clean rather than greasy, especially in a work/ professional environment. Have you tried just spraying the roots on non wash days?

Omg I need to try this!!

I think you need to experiment with different makes of dry shampoo. I find batiste awful and chalky. I really like a garnier one in a white van that's disappeared now.

If you have fair hair baby powder is cheaper and more effective.

I rub it in to my roots at bedtime the night before.

Also I learned that hard way you need to apply the products last or it will create frizz. So for example if you wear your hair straight brush it out and straighten it then apply the dry shampoo and it will add volume.
I use a dry flannel to wipe the dry shampoo off downwards from the root to remove the white marks. Once I got the hang of this it was a game changer. This bollocks on the can about removing it with a hairbrush is useless advice.

I used to be an everyday hair wash person but managed to switch to every other day. You do find that after a short while your hair becomes less greasy as result. I’m currently trying to train my hair to go to every 3rd day. My friend washes hers every 5 days and honestly you wouldn’t really know.

PickleAF · 19/08/2021 14:10

Slightly greasy - no judgement it happens!

Dry shampoo I find works best if you spray it the night before you need it, then as you sleep it actually absorbs oil and works into your hair, no white marks! Also - have you tried slicking your hair back? Occasionally if I need to get one more day out of mine I'll do a slicked back bun / pony with some hair gel or wax. Hides it so well!

EmotionalSupportBear · 19/08/2021 14:13

its good to leave it go greasy once in a while, the wash and let it dry naturally.

i used to have to wash every other day, but recently managed to get it to a point i can go every 3 days. Day one its down, day two i plait it, then i DO NOT TOUCH the top/roots/scalp with anything, and i leave it in the braid. Means day 3 i can just tidy and replait, with maybe a little spritz of dry shampoo to make it through the last day.

Sweetbabyrays · 19/08/2021 14:16

I’d judge greasy hair yes if I’m honest. I put baby powder or dry shampoo in at bed time and it’s fine in the morning. I went from every day washing to nearly every 3/4 now after a few months of this, probably only have it down on hair wash day though unless curled.

dun1urkin · 19/08/2021 14:18

I agree, dry shampoo the night before works well. I’m going to try the freshly washed trick as well, now.
My hair ‘needs’ washing about every 36 hours to not go greasy, I usually stretch it to 2 or 3 days with dry shampoo.
Luckily I’m fine with batiste, as am blonde with white bits Grin

Angryfrommanchester1 · 19/08/2021 14:18

My hair is greasy and I wash every 2 days. I do find it better to use the dry shampoo at night so it has a chance to sink in a bit better before day 2.

Angryfrommanchester1 · 19/08/2021 14:19

Sorry also meant to add, yes I would think it is unprofessional I’m afraid (if it was a regular occurrence).

StrawberrySquash · 19/08/2021 14:29

Not tried using overnight or but I agree about working it in. I spray only into the roots, leave briefly and then rub in with my fingers. This is what Sali Hughes said to do.

ImMrNimbus · 19/08/2021 14:33

The best way to make your hair get greasy more slowly following a wash is to not wash it as often.

I used to wash my hair every day or every 2 days at the absolute least. So maybe 5 or 6 times a week, and only ever didn't wash it if I wasn't going anywhere. It would be greasy by the evening if I washed it in the morning.

I then developed a disability that made showering and washing my hair very bloody difficult. I washed my hair once a week, showered my body every other day.

Now, I still wash my hair once a week. It gets greasy on day 6.

I love it ☺️

ImMrNimbus · 19/08/2021 14:34

I don't think it's unprofessional to go to work with your hair tied back. No one is looking at your hair really 😊

monkeysox · 19/08/2021 14:40

If I could smell it I'd judge. Loads of people don't wash their hair enough and their hair smells. Leave it a couple days but no more.

FatJan · 19/08/2021 14:45

White marks aren't synonymous with dry shampoo. If you're getting them you're either using too much or not rubbing it in properly. It's a lifesaver for me. Are you using Batiste? If not I suggest trying it out.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 19/08/2021 14:47

I was thinking smell too. I can't bear the smell of dirty hair. 😑

WutheringShites86 · 19/08/2021 14:51

What colour is your hair? For dry shampoo I use the batiste dark and lovely one for brunettes and no white marks but their are others for different hair colours

AlexSox · 19/08/2021 14:53

Thanks for the tips everyone. I tried 'training' my hair so it could go longer between washes, but sometimes I have busy weeks with important meetings every day so I end up washing it every day again and ruining the pattern!

AlexSox · 19/08/2021 14:55

My hair is dark blonde, so the marks show up but maybe I need to try putting it in the night before... Hadn't thought of that. But then doesn't your pillow smell of dry shampoo?

OP posts:
VanillaSpiceCandle · 19/08/2021 15:01

Yes I’d definitely judge dirty greasy hair at work. Also I think there are some people (including me!) that will never be able to train their hair out of needing daily washing. I’ve got light blonde hair and it also looks much greasier, much more quickly than when I had dyed it to a medium brown. Sorry OP nothing you can do but wash it every day.

honeylulu · 19/08/2021 15:02

My hair is similar. It can look OK for a day and a half but by the second afternoon it looks and feels greasy.
I usually wash it every morning using baby shampoo as its not drying.

If I skip a day I wear it up in a bun or ponytail and just wash and dry the fringe as that's the noticeable bit. (It also only takes a minute and no risk of split ends as that bit gets trimmed regularly. )

I used to work with someone who had very long thick hair. Great condition but obviously washing and drying it was very labour and time intensive. She would clearly go several days without washing it and you'd see the grease gradually extending along the hair on her scalp as the days went on. She always wore it loose so really obvious. I tried not to judge but it really did look bloody awful and she had a client facing role too.

thanksforyourcommentrandomman · 19/08/2021 15:24

you're supposed to massage the dry shampoo in and then brush out any excess, if you're left with white marks after than then you're either not massaging it in or brushing it out enough
