Where will the refugees coming to the UK live?

Meeklynamechanged · 17/08/2021 22:16

In no way a goady thread, I fully support helping the people fleeing such horrid circumstances, but genuine question.. where will they live? Where do we put people?

Where I live we have people waiting 10 years for a council property. Most areas around the UK have a huge deficit in available housing that doesn't meet demand.

With so many families stuck in overcrowded hostels and B&B's, families of 5 in 1 bed flats, I can't see where all of the required the housing will come from?

Where is the idea of the Uk being under crowded from? Scotland is underpopulated due to UK government immigration policy and the London pull. Cities might be quite short on space for building but the Uk as a whole has a shit ton of free land. Maybe the governments and local authorities can get their fingers out their arse and I don’t know, maybe consider there’s an entire landmass outside of London and central belts? ‘No room at the inn’ is an ideological position.

LakieLady · 18/08/2021 07:10

That's not discrimination though, is it? The landlord is making an assessment of how reliable someone's income is, the same as a bank does when you apply for credit or a mortgage. They know that the data shows people in receipt of benefits are more likely to default on the rental contract so they ask for extra security - pay up front/ guarantor.

The courts think differently, @VioletSand, as I suspect you know (both cases had wide publicity at the time). It's indirect discrimination, because (at least) 2 groups of people with protected characteristics, namely women and people with disabilities, are far more likely to be on benefits than people not in those groups.

The only reason that more cases haven't been brought against landlords and agents discriminating in this way is the lack of resources.
@PalmsandCharms "do gooders" trying to look like they're the better person, spouting crap?

So in case some are potentially taliban members, we should just let the majority die?

How the hell do you sleep at night.

What a deeply unpleasant person you sound.

I've just registered on one of the two sites provided on here, I've a spare room as one child has now left home. If a one in real life challenged my decision, I'd be telling them the exact same thing.
I sleep very well thank you.

SingingInTheShithouse · 18/08/2021 07:12

I'd also ask, if people are willing to give up their second bedroom to refugees, how about giving it up to people on the wait lists for housing?

This does happen here, DDs friend is in one. I think it's for single homeless & usually young people, but it's been happening for years.

Saddened by the dick fear on here too, they are humans in deep distress whether male or female & the people I know who have done this & taken in men have had fantastic experiences of very polite & helpful young men who were more helpful to them than their own kids

Slipperfairy · 18/08/2021 07:14

Loads of houses empty in n Wales. Well, for most of the year anyway. Maybe holiday homes could be used to actually house people.

@AttaGirrrrl

I’d take ‘family of five in a one bedroom flat’ over ‘being killed for going to school’, so I don’t think it much matters where refugees go, so long as it’s somewhere safe.

I returned to the UK a few years ago after living in the US for almost 50 years. I didn't recognize my own country. Good lord the UK is turning into a overcrowded shit-hole with vandalism, poverty, crime and even people attacking each other in the street for just looking at them the wrong way. Thank Lefty politics did that! It won't be too many more years before British people are fleeing the mess you are creating just so you can feel morally superior and not at all racist.

Cough, your right sided rant rather misses the pointGrin.

We haven't had a "lefty" government in aprox 50 years, so you might want to blame the Tory's & their chronic underfunding for that 👍🏻

Ha yes I think Boris has a couple?

@SmokedDuck

It may be, but isn't always the case that refugees are better off coming here to inadequacy housing. I've known of a few refugees who, though they really wanted to move to a place where they could live permanently and begin to build a life, they were in ok housing in an intermediate country. And were not at all happy to come here and be stuck in an inadequate place with bedbugs.

I'd also ask, if people are willing to give up their second bedroom to refugees, how about giving it up to people on the wait lists for housing?

Because that could negate a person's claim to be housed by the local authority.

But many people without appropriate housing are already sofa surfing or living in a temporary arrangement with friends or family.

Some people feel compelled to help refugees who cannot take advantage of such an arrangement & who have fled their own country through sheer desperation because their lives are at serious risk or they are at risk of persecution.

FFS. They are human. Just like you aspire to be

I don't aspire to be human, I just am. Please let's try and have a sensible discussion. Would you want a man who is a stranger living in your house?

Your comment wasn't really conducive to sensible discussion.

I'm not sure why you are so focussed on it being a man that needs housing? The government have already stated that women will be prioritised. But in any case my experience with the charities finding accommodation for refugees is that it is a thorough vetting process & people are matched based on numerous factors. I was turned down as a host when pregnant for example.

We have an issue with stupidity expensive investment property here too along with every empty property turning over to AirBnB. 😏

3 more in our street just since lockdown & at £800 for 2 nights & no responsibility you can see why people do it. The system that allows it needs to change. Ironically one of those houses was in the past rented out to a refugee family & they were anything but bad neighbours, much rather listen to their very respectful kids playing I the garden to the drunk noisy feckers we get now

@PalmsandCharms but you're not shouting from the rooftops that you won't do it! You're slagging people off, who want to help someone less fortunate than themselves?

Just why? Why be so unpleasant to people trying to help?

What difference to you does it make of I open my spare room to a refugee? It means it saves money for the councils etc as these refugees are coming and the more people who help house them the better for everyone, less cost etc.

But you state we're "do gooders", shouldn't do it?

Would you rather see people living on the streets? Begging? Starving? Cold?

I really don't understand your issue with people helping.

I'm no bully and didn't start the name calling or being unpleasant, that was you with your "do gooder" and "trying to make themselves look a better person" comments.

But of course, i mustn't stand up for myself or my principles, I must accept a nasty comment like that? Because I choose to help?

Maybe the nightingale hospitals could be used initially.

That is an absolutely brilliant idea!

Do they still have all the beds? I can't remember.

Thanks for the links to the share spare room sites.

I know this is unlikely but does anyone have a rough estimate on how many refugees there are or will be coming from Afghanistan? 💔

Are you saying there’s a list of people who are on the council housing list but actually would be happy with having their whole family in one bedroom, sharing a kitchen, bathroom etc in someone else’s house? I had no idea there was such a thing, nor such people happy to give up their place on the list for permanent housing of their own, to share with strangers.

Plenty of single people homeless.

To be fair, it is a risk to take a stranger into your home, especially if you have children. I certainly wouldn’t do it.

I think it's 20,000, so not a lot

Of course this may change, dependent of further events.
