At first it was for a back ache and now its for a cold - I’m not taking maximum dose every day, I try to get on with it but I take at least 1 dose. I’m worried I’m wrecking my liver/kidney. Reassurance please !

I wouldn't take paracetamol for a cold - is there some other reason?

ABitOfAShitShow · 17/08/2021 06:19

You’ll be fine. I’ve taken a lot more over a far longer period (along with other things) for cluster headaches and migraines. Doctors and specialists were well aware and not concerned.

Moonlight1972 · 17/08/2021 06:19

Thank you for getting back to me !! What should I take instead for relief ?

What is the relief for though? I still don't get why you would take paracetamol for a cold unless there's something else going on?

Newhorizon21 · 17/08/2021 06:23

There's good advice here www.nhs.uk/medicines/paracetamol-for-adults/

BettyFilous · 17/08/2021 06:23

I had SPD in both my pregnancies and was advised to take the full allowed dose of paracetamol daily (8 tablets) and spaced evenly to try and prevent breakthrough pain. Paracetamol barely touched the sides but I did so for 4.5 months. A few days of a partial dose? Meh. YABU.

Newhorizon21 · 17/08/2021 06:24

You can take ibuprofen, or this & paracetamol www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/medicines/can-i-take-paracetamol-and-ibuprofen-together/

Billandben444 · 17/08/2021 06:25

You'll be fine.

Sycamoretrees · 17/08/2021 06:30

Providing you are taking it for pain relief and are adhering to the dosing guidelines this shouldn't be an issue.

Hydrate · 17/08/2021 06:39

You can take them daily, you will be ok. They will only help with a chinese and headache or if you are feverish, they won't treat runny nose, eyes, coughing ect. What are your symptoms? There are a few choices of cold, flu or allergy medicines, some ones that treat multi symptoms, some separately. www.google.com/amp/uk.bestreviews.guide/amp/cold-flu-medicines Home remedies like ginger tea, you can buy ginger tea or use fresh or powdered in hot water, add honey and lemon, it helps congestion. Tea and also using a neil sinus rinse is my preference as I have high blood pressure and the decongestants in the cold pills are not recommended. But when I do take a cold pill it really helps a lot. I already take allergy meds daily so usually do not really like to take a cold medication as well.

Holothane · 17/08/2021 06:39

I’m prescribed four times a day for arthritis.

Hydrate · 17/08/2021 06:41

That was supposed to say achiness, not Chinese, my apologies.

Me too. I've been doing this for years.

Moonlight1972 · 17/08/2021 06:46

Thank you all ! I’m just feeling anxious, I have a stuffed nose, headache and was hot and cold during the night (no temp) but I made myself anxious about taking more medicine! I’m not used to it. Thank you I really appreciate all you taking the time to help me, I’m very grateful

Seriously?! Paracetamol helps with fevers, aches and pains, all of which can happen with a cold.

OP, what you’re doing is perfectly safe, just keep following the dosage instructions.

MinesAPintOfTea · 17/08/2021 07:09

The advice to seek medical help after 7 days is because if you are in enough pain to need painkillers for 7 days you are supposed to go to see a doctor. As you’ve had two different causes, it doesn’t really apply. It is safe to take paracetamol for longer.

ikeepseeingit · 17/08/2021 07:11

You’ll be okay taking them OP. Get well soon xx

Lanareyrey · 17/08/2021 07:13

It’s completely fine!

WetBench · 17/08/2021 07:17

@Moonlight1972 your paracetamol use is fine, but if you haven’t already go and get a covid PCR test today to rule that out.

Given that most over-the-counter cold remedies, including things like lemsip, contain paracetamol, I'm surprised that this is even a question.
whatagloriousthingtobe · 17/08/2021 07:26

I remember saying to the gp years ago after suffering horrendous headaches that I was concerned taking paracetamol everyday, he just said it's absolutely fine carry on

Cold / flu medications are mainly Paracetamol. People take it for the headaches, fevers etc which are associated with colds. Doctors routinely recommend Paracetamol for colds.
ShippingNews · 17/08/2021 07:28

You're fine, OP. I've been taking long-acting Paracetamol for arthritis pain, twice a day for years, never had a problem. Liver and kidneys are fine.

Mandalay246 · 17/08/2021 07:34

You will be fine OP. My DF takes paracetamol every day (for arthritis) and has done for several years - he has regular liver and kidney function tests and so far is fine.

I wouldn't take paracetamol for a cold

Maybe you wouldn't, but thousands of people do. It is possible for people to suffer differently with a cold, some don't require painkillers, others do. Maybe have a look at the ingredients of cold/flu medications.
