I have an appointment later next week and already dreading it.
Hate the small talk, the head massage (Know I am alone with this but feels uncomfortably intimate), the embarrassment of having a dry scalp and it being commented on, having to look at myself for ages in the mirror, the cost....aibu?

@MiaMarshmallows

Yes I would like to know why they do the head massage too. It sounds a bit OTT but I actually went really red faced last time as it just felt overly intimate
I just had a google, and a few sites said why, and most of the answers were pretty similar.

This was on hairfinder.com

The benefits of scalp massage are well known. It promotes circulation in the scalp, which helps keep the blood flowing to the follicles and keeps the oils and nutrients in healthy supply.

The chemicals help to lift your mood, thereby reducing stress and helping you to relax. Not only a great stress reliever it stimulates circulation of blood to the hair follicles, providing nutrition and thereby strengthening the hair shaft and roots, resulting in healthier hair.

So there ya go! Grin

Can't be that WELL KNOWN though, as loads of us on here didn't know it! Shock

ThinWomansBrain · 16/08/2021 13:44

Place I go to has notices up, and on the website, - saying please tell them if you don't want small talk/to sit facing the mirror, etc Grin

And you're paying for their time for the head massage - go somewhere cheaper rather than telling them not to bother! (but if you have a dry scalp and they're massaging in something helpful, may be worth having it?)

PintOfCoffeePlease · 16/08/2021 13:50

I also hate the small talk - I’m in a very “talky” job and don’t want to do it on my downtime! Grin I learned to cut my own hair from YouTube during lockdown and while it’s not as nice as when a professional does it, the benefit of being able to do it myself is well worth it. I may never go back.

Dahlietta · 16/08/2021 13:53

YANBU. I used to feel the same. Now I cut my hair myself. Nobody seems to have noticed Grin

Toomuchtodoo · 16/08/2021 13:54

I hate that I ask them to only cut 1cm and they end up cutting over an inch.

Another thing I hate is when rinsing the conduoner ut they do that smoothing thing with their hands so that the water only runs along the top layer of hair. The water doesn't penetrate the layers.
Whereas I want them to really agitate the hair with their fingertips to get the water to really reach near the scalp.
Does anybody know what I mean?

I always go home feeling as if my hair hasn't been rinsed properly near the nape of my neck.

LozzaChops101 · 16/08/2021 13:58

I say no to the head massage and studiously ignore the mirrors, but yeah I flippin hate the whole experience.

TheRebelle · 16/08/2021 15:25

They’ve always asked me if I want the head massage first, I can imagine it would be a bit weird if they just did it.

I’ve only ever had one head massage that was really good, I nearly fell asleep it was so relaxing, usually it feels like they don’t really know what they’re doing.

OhGiveUp · 16/08/2021 15:33

I have to say that when I moved over here, I was surprised that head massages weren't given as a matter of course.
I love it.
I enjoy the small talk too. I visit my hairdresser every five weeks and we always have a chat and a laugh.
Though I appreciate it's not for everyone.
Maybe if you visit the hairdresser more regularly and build up a friendship with them to make you feel more comfortable? That's what I did.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 16/08/2021 15:38

I think I would Actually Freak at an unexpected head massage from a stranger. Hopefully I'd manage to freak in a quiet way, but it's really not something that should be sprung on people.

mustlovegin · 16/08/2021 17:08

The benefits of scalp massage are well known

Surely anyone can massage their own scalp if necessary? It's not like it's a hard to reach body part Grin

Graphista · 16/08/2021 21:04

@dottydodah exactly! So much easier to get it how I want it and no faff! And saves a fortune

and no one can cut curly hair

So true!

Dd and I both curly. Well I'm more waves than curls, dds is proper very tight curls curly.

The only time she had a hairdresser that could cut her hair is when we lived in the city and she went to a hairdresser that specialised in Afro hair.

I use proper hairdressing scissors too. That does make a difference but honestly it's so easy to do yourself

@LadyJaye thanks to your comment I can give readers an idea of ours.

I'm between a 2b and 2c, dd is between 3c and 4A I'd say

AngryWhompingWillow · 16/08/2021 22:05

I wonder WHY the reflection in the mirror is always so hideous at the hairdressers?!

XenoBitch · 16/08/2021 22:09

YANBU. I hate it too. My mum always trimmed the split ends off my hair. It was not until I was in my late 20s that I let a home hairdresser touch my hair. I was mid 30s when I went into an actual salon for the first time. I had my hair washed, and the hairdresser just kept commenting on how scared I looked.
I have since only gone to the drop in ones because then I can go when I am feeling particularly brave and not get anxious about an appointment. I have not even be able to do that for a few years. The whole experience just traumatises me.
I am now back to my mum trimming my split ends.

AnneLovesGilbert · 16/08/2021 22:16

You don’t have to go. I don’t. DH does mine and I’d do it myself if he didn’t/couldn’t/wouldn’t. I do his too. YouTube is your friend.

I quite like going but it was a lockdown habit that’s stuck and neither of us is going back, we’re saving a mint.

Loads of people have said the same. DIY or find a mobile stylist.
