Lighthearted - to think DP's pronunciation of 'hearth' is odd?

SarahAndQuack · 15/08/2021 20:38

I say 'hearth' to rhyme with Darth (Vader).

She says 'hearth' to rhyme with 'birth'.

I think she is deeply deviant. Which of us is right?

(Or if, as I predict, you tell me it's regional, can you tell when were you're from?)

No it's harth not hirth Grin

Palavah · 15/08/2021 20:39

If she's Scots or Irish then her pronunciation makes complete sense.

Sunbird24 · 15/08/2021 20:39

Only ever heard ‘harth’, either in the SouthWest, Lancashire or Lincolnshire…

ShinyMe · 15/08/2021 20:39

I'm with you. I've never heard it rhyming with birth!

RocketPanda · 15/08/2021 20:40

I say hearth like birth and I am from the Irish border.

Teaandakitkat · 15/08/2021 20:40

Hirth birth. West of Scotland here.

Snowwhite78 · 15/08/2021 20:40

Harth defo

TuesdayRuby · 15/08/2021 20:41

I have ALWAYS called it a “hirth”. But now I’ve reached a mature age where I need to actually buy one, I was astonished to hear the man in the stove shop call it a “harth”!!

SarahAndQuack · 15/08/2021 20:41

Ooh, interesting! DP isn't remotely Scottish or Irish, but I shall tell her she clearly has some kind of weird connection. Grin

I would say it like birth but admittedly I think I’ve only seen the word written down, I’m not sure I’ve ever heard it said aloud so maybe I read it wrong! I’m from Wales.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 15/08/2021 20:43

Harth in the West Midlands. I hate hearing "hirth". It's like when someone pronounces clerk as "clurk" instead of "clark".

Oh dear I do that as well! Again a word I have only seen written down - I’m clearly better read than I am well spoken!! Grin
0blio · 15/08/2021 20:44

I'm Scottish and I've never heard it pronounced any other way than to rhyme with Darth.

nocoolnamesleft · 15/08/2021 20:44

Harth.

AmazinglyGraceless · 15/08/2021 20:45

It should be hearth to rhyme with Darth.

Hirth - is she Liverpool (ish?)

MissM94 · 15/08/2021 20:46

I have a "hearth of the ram" pub near me and I pronounce it the same way I say "Darth"

I'm from Ramsbottom! (Bury/Lancashire) 😁

lynxca16 · 15/08/2021 20:46

Its a 'harth' in our house, don't know why just always heard it pronounced like that.

tiredanddangerous · 15/08/2021 20:47

Harth!

Justme10 · 15/08/2021 20:47

I've never had to say is out loud (thankfully) because in my head I say hirth Blush

ZeroFuchsGiven · 15/08/2021 20:49

Waspsarearseholes · 15/08/2021 20:49

Never heard anything but 'harth' (not that I hear, read or say it very often!) I'm from South Wales.
