Lighthearted - to think DP's pronunciation of 'hearth' is odd?

SarahAndQuack · 15/08/2021 20:38

I say 'hearth' to rhyme with Darth (Vader).

She says 'hearth' to rhyme with 'birth'.

I think she is deeply deviant. Which of us is right?

(Or if, as I predict, you tell me it's regional, can you tell when were you're from?)

Scottish.
I say harth but have heard both pronunciations.

romdowa · 16/08/2021 08:13

I say hart and I'm from the very South of Ireland, my father says hirth and is from the South East. So it may be a regional thing.

CliffordMystery · 16/08/2021 08:21

All these people stressing that it’s a soft “r” not like Darth Vader though? I think you are pronouncing Darth Vader incorrectly! It’s exactly the same as hearth!

CliffordMystery · 16/08/2021 08:23

@Mybestgirl

Central Scotland and I say ‘Harth’ on another noted I hate ‘buried’ to rhyme with ‘hurried’ it’s ‘birried’ I sometimes hear Scottish reporters saying it and it drives me mad!
Surely it’s “berried” not “birried”?
headintheproverbial · 16/08/2021 08:34

@Palavah

If she's Scots or Irish then her pronunciation makes complete sense.
Wtaf? Of course it doesn't, you loon!! I'm one of those nationalities and DH is the other. Confirm it's HARTH all the way.
womaninatightspot · 16/08/2021 08:42

I'm harth as well. East coast Scotland

BreatheAndFocus · 16/08/2021 08:49

Harth- I’ve never heard ‘hirth’ and I’ve lived in various places in the South of England.

traintraveller · 16/08/2021 08:57

Harth, west coast scotland

Jacopo · 16/08/2021 08:57

Born west of Scotland, grew up in England, live in East Scotland and I have never heard it pronounced any way other than HARTH.

SarahAndQuack · 16/08/2021 09:12

This is fascinating, thanks all! I'm no closer to knowing why she says it like that but I have learned a lot. Grin

I'm Yorkshire with Newcastle and Lancashire connections. Never heard it pronounced hirth. It's harth for me!

UmamiMammy · 16/08/2021 09:52

Welsh. Never heard it pronounced anything but harth.

Bloodypunkrockers · 16/08/2021 09:56

Actually occurred to me this morning that although I've never heard people say hirth, I have heard them say herth, to rhyme with earth

But the majority say harth

Hobbesmanc · 16/08/2021 10:04

Harth for me. (North East) shocked to here my partner (South) pronounce it Hirth when we first met. Although he also pronounced Almond as Olmand so can't be relied on to speak correctly

Hankunamatata · 16/08/2021 10:07

H ar th

Foghead · 16/08/2021 10:11

I have never had to say that word or come across it except in a book. Then I just read it like I was reading heart but with a th sound at the end.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 16/08/2021 10:23

OP, does she pronounce heart "hurt" (as that would be logical)?

ThatIsQuiteACrane · 16/08/2021 10:25

We're Scottish and proud 'harth-ers' Grin

DH says 'boarder' for 'border' and it grates on me so much!

I’d say berried, to sound like berry. Not birried.
Mochudubh · 16/08/2021 10:34

Herth to rhyme with Earth. I'm Scottish.

Xanadu58 · 16/08/2021 10:49

Harth . I'm from Suffolk

M0rT · 16/08/2021 10:51

I am from Dublin and would say either Heart or Harth, depending on how much effort I'm willing to make with my 'th' s that day Grin

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 16/08/2021 10:57

I'd pronounce it Earth with a H in front so H Earth

AlmostSummer21 · 16/08/2021 11:04

It's a horrible word, always sounds wrong. I'm glad we don't have one! In front of the fireplace suffices.

Mybestgirl · 16/08/2021 16:08

I’ve never heard ‘berried’ instead of ‘birried’
