Which neighbour is being unreasonable?

Neighbour A runs (ran) a small online business from home (pre pandemic). During the lockdown as more people were buying online business went up. Due to nature of the business a large lorry would visit neighbour A weekly to deliver stock and sometimes Ups / DHL would make visits to collect / deliver.

Neighbour B has young children and likes them to play outside and didn’t didn’t like the ‘busyness’ of the street which is a nice quiet cul de sac. Neighbour B reported neighbour A to the council and got the business shut down.

Neighbour A found out neighbour B was responsible for this and told everyone in the street both in person and on the street WhatsApp chat.

Other residents of the street now feel awkward. Who IBU neighbour A or B?

Were they not registered as a business?

MoonlightWanderer · 15/08/2021 18:48

Why did the business get shut down? Was there something illegal or dodgy about it?

User135792468 · 15/08/2021 18:49

Neighbour B was spiteful to get it shut down. I hate the English mentality of not allowing people to better themselves. Neighbour A then also reacted out of spite as they were angry. Tbf, I would have also done the same as Neighbour A and told the other neighbours. They need to know they have a curtain twitching neighbour who snitches on people. My guess is you’re neighbour B 😂

Doomscrolling · 15/08/2021 18:50

Depends. Industrial size lorries delivering/collecting on a residential street and Neighbour A is being unreasonable. Zoning laws are there for a reason. Residential streets aren’t laid out for that type of traffic and it can be unsafe for pedestrians.

A Ford transit twice a week and Neighbour B is being unreasonable.

Generalpost · 15/08/2021 18:51

So neighbour B reported because there was a delivery once a week 🤔

LIZS · 15/08/2021 18:51

Do they own their homes, are there restrictions on running a business there, either lease, deeds or council? A should not be badmouthing anyone regardless. B probably had a right to complain and A can find alternative premises.

TeenMinusTests · 15/08/2021 18:51

I think that unless A had permission to run a business that required a 'large lorry' to a residential home then A was being unreasonable.
Ideally when the business grew A should have moved to a light business park.

Windywuss · 15/08/2021 18:52

If the business was shut down then it must have been in breach of planning law ( change if use?) Or something that meant it was not ok from that address.

Unfortunate but I think people at home have a right to live peacefully. I think A was reasonable to check whether the business was allowed but not ok to bitch and gossip. Neighbour B will unfortunately have to get premises.

Summersun2020 · 15/08/2021 18:53

Neighbour B is very unreasonable. Her kids shouldn’t be free range in the road if they haven’t the sense to look for traffic

MiddleClassProblem · 15/08/2021 18:55

I don’t understand how they would be able to shut it down for just having deliveries…

thefirstmrsrochester · 15/08/2021 18:55

As we were locked down, neighbour A would have been highly unlikely to get a business premises unless they were manufacturing essential goods. From the info provided, neighbour B is the most unreasonable out the two.

spooney21 · 15/08/2021 18:56

Did B speak to A before reporting them? B probably wouldn't want to live near me as we have multiple deliveries most days!

Neighbourshateeachother · 15/08/2021 18:59

No, neighbour B did not speak to neighbour A and only by chance neighbour A found out it was neighbour B that called the council.

I believe that you need permission to run a business from your home and in some cases change of use is required depending on the nature. She would also need appropriate insurance and no doubt need to let the mortgage company know if there was one on the property.

They are both in the wrong for me.

Neighbourshateeachother · 15/08/2021 19:00

@MichelleScarn

Were they not registered as a business?
Yes they were a registered business

Neighbour A is the unreasonable one. The council wouldn't have stopped them running the business from their home without good reason. They should have found commercial premises for their business if it had expanded so much. Neighbour A slagging off neighbour B to everyone else just makes them look spiteful and childish.

Mojoj · 15/08/2021 19:01

Are you the grass?Grin

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 15/08/2021 19:01

Neighbour A is in the wrong if running a business that didn’t have the correct permissions etc from a residential address. Neighbour b presumably wanted a home next to other homes rather than a business.

Seesawmummadaw · 15/08/2021 19:02

Why did neighbour A’s business get shut down?

Travis1 · 15/08/2021 19:02

Neighbour B is a twat. Hope neighbour A can appeal and get something sorted for their business

ExpressDelivery · 15/08/2021 19:05

Large lorries don't belong in residential streets. If A was running a business they should have applied for planning (which they likely wouldn't have got). If they were doing nothing wrong they wouldn't have been closed down.

FawnFrenchieMum · 15/08/2021 19:06

I need more info on why the business was shut down?

TedHastingsweeDonkey · 15/08/2021 19:07

So what was the actual reason behind the business being shut down?

Carrotinsaladiswrong · 15/08/2021 19:07

Face value neighbour B is a mardy div. Feel like there’s more to it though.

Standrewsschool · 15/08/2021 19:07

running a business from home

I don’t think A was necessarily in the wrong - some weeks we get more deliveries than that from Next, ASOS, Amazon etc, if everyone in the household orders something that week.

B should not be letting her kids play on the street if she is concerned about traffic. Also, I presume the large lorry comes at the same time each week, so easy to stop your dc out playing then? I think she was spiteful.

I’m guessing you’re A.?
