Crazy bravery? To picks spiders up in my hand to throw them out of door/ window?

Dangermouse5 · 14/08/2021 23:07

My DCs think I am mad. Or super tough.

I stopped doing this for a few years when there was a spate of black widow 🕷 spiders riding into U.K. on bananas. But have started again. I grab them in my hand and throw them out nearest window or door. So much easier than the ' trap into a plastic cup with cardboard underneath'
method. When you actually might then drop them and have to spend at least half an hour trying to catch the flighty things or lie that you killed them (rarely kill a spider, I can't do it) .

Not beetles. Beetles are scary. Shock... But spiders ... meh.
Not big spiders mind. Just spiders without beetle sized bodies.

My cousin threatens to burn her house down (possibly regularly) when she finds a spider. Grin

What crazy bravery parental (or other) do you MNers do?

I do love how a negative can be made if bloody anything. OP gets rid of spiders, makes a fun post, cue she is committing spider torture and is personally responsible for the horrific death of spiders and is a homicidal maniac instead.......well done OP, I can't touch them- but also live in Australia where if it's not trying to kill you, it's the size of your sodding hand.........

WorraLiberty · 15/08/2021 00:06

That's quite unusual that your DCs think you're mad or super tough

Most kids have no problem with spiders unless they've learned to be scared of them from someone else.

Dangermouse5 · 15/08/2021 00:07

Also something to small to be rat but too many legs ran out of the banana house into a field. I have almost picked up some kind of tarantula on a pineapple once.

Eeek

The bravest thing i do is worms 🤣 moths, bettles to I dont mind the vegan bugs oh and the odd bat!

Ok, that's pretty brave. I wouldn't go near a bat. Nor beetles.

Worms and moths, yeah sure, gotta be gentle , same as spiders... loose quick scoop and out....

I pick up quite a few out of the bath before running a bath. But not if they're false widows. I squash those. I am not a friend to all spiders.

I haven't rescued a tegenaria house spider, either, because they don't appear to be stupid enough to jump in the bath in the first place, though they do run round the bathroom sometimes.

JaceLancs · 15/08/2021 00:08

I rescue spiders, beetles, moths, butterflies, bees etc where possible
Flies and wasps I try and usher out but will kill if needed
Due to having cats I’m also a dab hand at catching birds, mice, voles, rabbits, squirrels and even frogs who I try and set free to live another day
Rats I can’t abide so let cats have them - DP has had to finish a few off - recent memory of him chasing a very large rat round my dining room with a spade

Anordinarymum · 15/08/2021 00:12

I always rescue spiders with a glass and a piece of paper and ask them not to come back as I eject them from the premises:)
I will pick up small spiders (money) and slugs and snails. I'll take mice and birds and the odd bat off the cat, but I will not touch a rat in case I get nipped.
Nothing really scares me to be honest, but spiders freak me out. I always remain calm, but it's when they disappear and then suddenly reappear that makes me jump. I would rather know where they are.

One thing I always remind myself is that spiders are blind so they are vulnerable really.

Mrsjayy · 15/08/2021 00:14

I picked up a wasp my dog was going for it and flicked it out the window

Time40 · 15/08/2021 00:17

I do this, but I'm like you, OP - I can pick up the smalls and mediums, but not the extra-large ones. I'm also very good at catching house-invading bats - it's actually really easy.

Thankyou SD1978 You understand I am not committing spidercide but rather rescuing them carefully from certain book or magazine bashing death from my DCs. Who are scared of spiders - and they didn't get it from me. I am no longer allowed to have Fred and Ginger living in any part of my house. Or any other spiders even if they have been given human names whilst I claim to DCs that they are fully paid up lodgers ...

Ah.. wow. Ok clearly I'm U.K. not Aus because there is zero chance j would go near the range or astonishing spiders in Australia! A whole different level. We don't really get much in the way of poisonous arachnoids here. Although, a PP experienced one and we get the odd newspaper article.

That's pretty tough. You must love DDog - or was it adrenaline?

My cats try to eat anything that moves and I have had to push them away from bees and moths with warning colours before. They eat spiders and flies and have had a few attempts at anything g small that moves.

Have never picked up a wasp. 🐝 . That's protectiveness as I bet DDog was considering eating it. One saved wasp, one saved DDog...

We had our windows open a lot during the rains a couple of weeks ago. Eldest DC had covid and we were trying to keep the house well ventilated. I picked a wet leaf off the window frame and showed it to my youngest DD, saying "oh this looks just like a slug".

Yeah. It was a slug.

I had to style it out as DD obviously wanted to keep it as a pet. She called it Barry.

DecorChange · 15/08/2021 00:32

We had a wasp nest in our shed. OH going mad with the jeebies. Plastic bag and squished sorted it right out. The nest I mean not OH. I pick up spiders too. Can't deal with slaters though blergh!

GrinGrin Lol!! It wasn't even a snail!!
Snails I can cope with. Love pet snails.. so do my DCs who feed them strawberries from my garden even if I try to protect said strawberries..,

But slugs..? *shudder...

How is Barry by the way?

F'ing hell, wish I hadn't read this thread. Feeling they're watching me till I turn the light out. Not a fan!

ScrambledSmegs · 15/08/2021 00:38

I managed to convince DD that Barry would be happier outside with lots of vegetation to munch on. There was a 'free Barry' ceremony. She made a speech.

He's probably munching through my poor plants as we speak!

That was a whole level of gung-ho I wouldn't couldn't have taken on. There's a wasp man in our local council EH team

You're good, OP.

DH picks up spiders & chucks them out all the time. DC used to do it, too, but I think have gone timid now. DD often 'rescued' spiders while in primary school. All fine, nobody hurt by any spiders. In fact, DH has a friend who is an entomologist & commented that one of the blighters DH handled (Facebook post) is poisonous, but it only bites if aggravated. DH is gentle so never any problems.

I feel a wimp I am not scared to handle anything but tiny spiders. There are black widows where I grew up, though.

Nope, OP you're braver than me. I would burn the house down. It's the only solution to spiders.

I try to pretend to my DC I'm not absolutely terrified of bugs. I failed miserably the other day when a massive bee (it was honestly massive) got in the house and I ran out the back door screaming.

lljkk · 15/08/2021 00:50

Black widows are obvious, at least. Brown recluse less obvious although fairly rare, and actually more toxic than BWs. Neither of them like to come in houses, anyway. You kind have to go to their places to find them.

Barely any spider in Britain is ever potentially harmful -I think. I've accidentally handled huge English garden spiders, they are especially harmless but I'm still nervous about them

DH also merrily kills wasps, I often campaign to try to protect the wasps.

Dangermouse5 · 15/08/2021 00:51

@Gingernaut

This is my party trick.

I used to rescue my SIL from spiders when we lived in a flat together.

Gingernaut

Don't think I didn't notice my kindred spirit earlier
It seems so much kinder than what most ppl do when they see spiders 🕷 . I kinda like spiders but am not allowed to have free range wild spiderarium in my house (anymore) (pesky DCs go into every room now!)

ScrambledSmegs · 15/08/2021 00:53

No video footage I'm afraid! She gets camera-shy.

She has form for this. We have an old house that has lots of spidey-holes. There was a massive house spider that lived in a crack in a beam halfway up the stairs a couple of years ago. She named it Bernard. Pretty sure it was a female Grin.

Dangermouse5 · 15/08/2021 00:54

To be fair that's a reasonable response

Did you DCs or DP or neighbours notice? Did anyone rescue you??!
Are you still out there? Should we send you meals and a blanket? Blink once for yes... Google satellite will capture it...
