The modern Milkman

So I'm still livid about what just happened but I'm not sure if I'm being grumpy and tired or should I genuinely be anger

I recently set up my account with the intention of signing up to the modern milkman for weekly deliveries . I had a holiday coming up so I didn’t place my order with the plan to do it on my return. I liked the fact it was plastic free.

Whilst on holiday I received a call asking me why I hadn’t ordered. I explained I was on holiday and would be doing it when I returned. The caller was very insisted and urged me to complete on the phone however I was driving at the time and eventually got them off the phone .

I was a bit annoyed at what felt like a heavy handed sales call but let it pass.

I returned from holiday and literally 48 hours since the phone call which is tonight at 6.40 in a Saturday evening my doorbell went. We were in the middle of feeding our baby and eating a family dinner so my husband answered the door to find a sales agent asking us to complete our sign up.

My husband explained it wasn’t a good time as we were feeding our baby and the sales person said “So.. it doesn’t take two of you to feed a baby” I am absolutely livid. Firstly I’m livid that anyone has a right to come to my front door and say a comment like that with zero knowledge of why two of us might be feeding a baby.

Secondly I’m annoyed that something I genuinely wanted to use is now something I won’t go near.

Is this the way of sales now? Or have I a right to feel a bit harassed ?

Milk amd More are great for us. Quite a few neighbours use them too - no issue with time of deliveries or shelf life.

Rhythmisadancer · 26/08/2021 10:31

Been using Milk and More for a few months. Some bottles went off very quickly over summer, and one time the delivery was over 24 hours late with no way to contact them to find out what was going on, but other than that I'm pretty happy, and will carry on with it. Pausing for holiday was easy. Less plastic is my main concern.

NothingIsWrong · 26/08/2021 10:31

I've used milk and more for years as well. I paid for their wee cool box and it works brilliantly. Early in lockdown last year their website went a bit haywire, I ordered a veg box and it didn't come so I assumed it hadn't gone through. It turned up a month later! App is easy to use

Jent13c · 26/08/2021 18:05

@RainbowBriteUk

I had the exact same experience with mcqueens. The guy came round the door and told me something entirely differently and it took 2x 20minute phone calls and speaking to a manager to finally get it cancelled because they were sending me 2x 4L every 3 days. How can anyone get through that much milk????

The guy actually said to me on the phone "so you told us to put it on hold (lies i told you to cancel it) and we didn't so you've been getting deliveries and didn't tell us, don't you think that's a bit shady?" I explained that the single delivery had come the day before when I was on nightshift and the last thought on my mind was spending 20 minutes on the phone with someone refusing to cancel an agreement I never even signed up to.

Would not be surprised if they were all the same company and savings to the farmer were minimal.

ViewFromHalfway · 26/08/2021 18:35

That's awful, OP!

I've tried looking into getting milk delivered and can't find a company who actually have prices on their website so it seems I'd need to sign up before actually knowing what I'd be charged! Might go and search the ones mentioned on this thread to see if they deliver here and if they give some indication of what it might cost me before I order...

Hemingwaycat · 26/08/2021 18:44

Write a review on trust pilot.

I used MM for a few months and had no issue at all but they suddenly stopped taking the empty bottles away so I accumulated 35 bottles in the end. I emailed them to complain and they said they’d have a word with the delivery person so the next time they came they took half of the bottles but left the other half? Anyway I noticed the expiration date on the milkshakes was 2 days after delivery so I just cancelled my deliveries and haven’t bothered since. It’s a lot cheaper to get supermarket milk anyway especially since I have 5 DC so use a lot.

snapple21 · 26/08/2021 19:03

I had to cancel modern milkman. They kept getting earlier and earlier delivering the milk. Midnight, on hot nights, so the milk and butter was sitting out all night Hmm

Blueskythinking123 · 26/08/2021 19:11

I cancelled after the first delivery. It arrived at 11pm, it was just luck I heard them. It was during the really hot spell we had in July so wouldn't have been any good if left until the morning.

sjshep · 19/11/2021 07:12

DeepaBeesKit · 19/11/2021 08:13

Look for a local milkman, there are more and more of them.

Whysotired · 19/11/2021 08:21

Yeah I signed up to them in lockdown and tbh it was an absolute waste of time. Literally got our orders wrong all the time, missing items and no refunds. Cancelled after 2 months. Find a local independent milkman x

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/11/2021 10:57

Milk and more are the ones I use too

He delivers past midnight and always fine in the morning

Very good with allowing you to put in holidays at short notice and refunding you

TakeMe2Insanity · 19/11/2021 11:45

I’d email and tell them why you won’t be finishing the sign up and that their tactics have ensured cancellation.

claireb7rg · 19/11/2021 12:28

Been using milk and more now since April and loving it. Service here is fab, not had any issues with them at all and loving the glass bottles / no plastic!!

Nsky · 19/11/2021 12:36

Milk and more suit me, only 2 pints a week, easy to pause and cancel if needed.
Local milkman need to be worth it and easy, too much hassle, I’d cancel

IARTNS · 19/11/2021 12:48

No complaints with Milk & More Smile

Scarlettpixie · 19/11/2021 13:16

I use milk and more and they have been great. I get deliveries 3 times a week and you can add things up to the night before if you run out of bread or anything.

TwoBulletsFiveZombies · 19/11/2021 13:35

These companies are putting local milkmen who've been doing it for years out of business. I know you have to roll with the times, but I'd try to support a smaller, local business if you can!

Odinsdottir · 19/11/2021 13:38

I've also had an awful experience with the modern milkman. An absolute joke to be honest, I also felt very forced into the repeat orders of mon/wed/Fri milk deliveries. You can't cancel your deliveries just delay til the week later? I ended up being down about £20 they refused to refund back to me. Not worth it. Hmm

TheCatterall · 19/11/2021 13:53

Please please please use a local Milkman.

They really need the support right now. And all the ones I know deliver glass bottles. Had mine for over 20 years and he’s a lovely old chap.

It’s not like it’s a revolutionary concept that MM has brought back as they’d have you believe.

I’m in Lancashire where MM started with one of our lovely dodgy councillors. He got Boris to come along and hide in the refrigerated walk in fridge to avoid some rather persistent journalist questions. Wish he’d stayed in there.

We have no end of problems locally with MM. forever knocking on doors, overly pushy sales and outright lies. They’ve told folks locally that the local milkman is retiring, or they are taking over his area etc. Incompetent. Poor service. Zero shits given for customers.

Buy local. Support your small businesses. Your milkman and local farmers will love you for it.

idontlikealdi · 19/11/2021 14:12

We had a really aggressive doorstop salesman for modern milkman, put me off ever using them. He wanted me to download the app and sign up there and then, also In the middle of kid feeding time.

GreyhoundG1rl · 19/11/2021 14:20

@PieonaBarm

You'll have local milkmen too, ask on a local Facebook page. The Modern Milkman who covers our estate has lost all his customers due to him screeching round in first with his radio blaring at 4am, they've all gone to a local guy. Sadly we don't drink enough milk to use a milkman but if we did I would go local!
We've had this with Milk and More. Arrived at 2.30am and woke the whole bloody street! I cancelled in the end, couldn't be doing with that.
Peccary · 19/11/2021 14:20

They've started leafletting round here, they certainly won't tempt me from the local dairy who managed to deliver, in the Peak District, during beast from the east. Website is easy to use for amendments and they fix issues quickly.

DeadoftheMoon · 19/11/2021 14:26

Made me think of...

Babdoc · 19/11/2021 14:40

Unless you get through gallons a week, or have a v tiny fridge, I don't understand why you would want or need separate daily milk deliveries?
I have a Sainsbugs delivery once a week, which includes 8 pints of milk in recyclable plastic cartons. On the rare occasion when I need an extra pint, I pick one up with my newspaper at the village shop.
